Should PortableApps.com be discontinued?

Well, there's little activity going around here, and it has been over six years, and I wonder if it is a good idea to discontinue PortableApps.com, just like U3, which discontinued few years ago.

No Way

Considering that we're the largest portable software platform in the world, the only fully legal one, will be one of the largest (if not the largest) Windows app store once it's fully rolled out to everyone and have one of the top 5,000 trafficked sites on the interwebs, discontinuing would be downright silly. Smile

U3 only achieved a small fraction of the userbase and feature-set of PortableApps.com and that was after years of development, tens of millions of pre-loaded drives shipped and millions of dollars spent on advertising. We roundly beat them with no preloads and no advertising.

With the new 'Next' platform releases and our new hardware and software partnerships, the sky is really the limit. Smile

Maybe I think it should be

Maybe I think it should be discontinued soon anyway, on October 1, 2011, also there's no activity on Outdated Official PortableApps

Your opinion

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. There is indeed activity on the outdated apps, with the last flood having happened September 18, more are coming soon. Be patient.

[Edit: missed a comma]

Delusional or Trolling?

At this point, it would seem you're either trolling or delusional. The outdated apps page is regularly maintained and updated. Updated apps are posted very regularly and have been for years. And, to top it all off, you're referencing that no updates happened as of October 1, 2011... a date 5 days in the future... as if it is happening today? I'm not sure if this is a troll or a delusion, but if you don't have anything rational to say, please refrain from posting further in this thread.

I read it differently

I don't think he was saying there was no outdated activity on October 1, but that it should be discontinued on October 1, and (separate train of thought) there supposedly had been no activity in the outdated thread.

However, call me paranoid, but it did read to me like a veiled threat, especially when you take into account this other post by the same user which also references October specifically.

Something sinister afoot, or do I just need some more sleep?

Please

Don't Be Silly

@ufd4376 I've seen some stupid questions posed in my time and this one makes the top ten.

Load the App and Play

Seriously?

Really?

Are you kidding me?

Is this a joke?

Are you being facetious?

I mean come on!

We've added tons of apps to the directory since the beginning. Large advancements have been made in how we develop portable apps, what it means to have a portable app, and have a growing userbase, contributing to the over 100,000,000 downloads (a lot more now, probably), and your asking if this we should be discontinued?

Bad

Yap, I think your right. PortableApps.com is a waste of everyone's time with no real future in sight. Sorry John, looks like the project's over.

I believe this post is intended to be antagonistic

Please note this user's earlier highly impatient post/thread:

While we do try to respect everyone's opinions, IMHO there is no real justification for posts like this, which seem intended only to provoke.

The guy only have 6 months around, I asume he doesn´t know how we do things here...

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

You are definitely coming off as passive-aggressive, ufd4376

I'm going to make a guess that you are not in any way a programmer, developer, nor have ever been involved in the actual creation of a project like this.
Perhaps you have no concept of the amount of work and dedication it has taken, and continues to require, for PortableApps development.
Maybe you can't imagine that despite the negativity of a handful of hypercritical people, JTH and co are 100% invested in the future of this enterprise, and there is a loyal following that spans the globe, dwarfing the few adherents to the ill-fated and restrictive U3 fiasco.
I gather that you are dissatisfied with the pace of development of this excellent free software, to which you have contributed... what?

If you were to say, "what's taking so long?", you would get a meaningful answer.
If you were to say, "I'm too impatient, I no longer want to be a part of this", we would say, thanks for playing, and Carol Merrill has some lovely consolation prizes for you as you leave.
But comments like this aren't actionable or useful. They just kinda make you seem like a d-
So why do you even bother?
