VST support and adding new VST plug-ins?Submitted by John Kaufeld on September 14, 2006 - 2:36pm.
I'm having trouble getting VST plug-ins to work. I installed them as the main Audacity instructions specify, but AudacityPortable won't display them in the Effects menu. Steps thus far: * Downloaded the VST handler from SourceForge and some VST plug-ins (Endorphin and Fish Fillets from the Portable Fish Phones guy) from another site When I open a sound file, highlight a section, and click on the Effects menu, I expect to see the VST effects at the bottom of it, along with all of the other effects. Instead, I just see the basic set of effects that AudacityPortable included at first execution. Am I doing something wrong? Did I miss something? ( categories: )

Hmmm
It may be a compression issue (Audacity is UPXed) or the registry. Make a backup copy of \AudacityPortable\App\Audacity\ and then delete the contents. Copy your local copy of Audacity from C:\Program Files\Audacity (or wherever) into that same directory. Then try using the plugins.

Duh
No offense... but, well, DUH
We're trying to determine the cause of a problem. The way you do that is to try various things like work-arounds to see what fixes the issue. If uncompressing it works... then I'll leave the necessary files uncompressed in the next release. I don't use VST files nor do I have access to any, so I can't play with it myself at the moment.

OK :)
BenMcLean - September 20, 2006 - 1:15pmYeah I was just trying to make the point that this should be fixed in the next release.
It is really good that you are giving this guy advice.
Just google for some VST plugins - they're pretty easy to find.
Tested It. Works as Expected
I justed tested out the vst-bridge.dll and a VST plugin known to work with Audacity and it worked just fine with Audacity Portable.
Keep in mind that many VST plugins will not work. Custom interfaces are not supported, only a generic interface is shown. Some plugins can't handle that. VST Instrument plugins (VSTi) will not work either.
Basically, if a VST plugin isn't confirmed to work with Audacity, it won't work with Audacity Portable either. The VST bridge is still incomplete and buggy. It's also not 100% open source, so it cannot be bundled with Audacity or hosted on SourceForge.net.
For more details, see Why do some VST plug-ins look wrong, or not work?.
