Universal Extractor

There's this great app called universal extractor which I found here. (don't know if it's the official site) It extracts all sorts of files (so far anything i've thrown at it) and is already somewhat portable, my problem being the main executable being in the same folder as a lot of other files. IMHO it should be outside with the other files in a lower directory)

anyway I was wondering maybe you guys should mirror it. It's a great app, and useful as ... hehe Smile

Looks portable already.

It will run portable, but has a few things that are being cleaned up.

Cut from http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=641#1379
...as you pointed out UniExtract does write a file to C:\ for debugging,
and it does write history information to the registry. When I originally
wrote this app I didn't give any thought to the possibility that people
would want to run it from a USB drive. However, given that this has become
a fairly common use, I'm planning on making the history and debugging features
optional in a future version so that it can truly be considered a "portable" app.

As you can see, that was posted 2006-09-12, so give him a bit of time. Wink

How to make more portable?

I'm currently working on an updated version of Universal Extractor, and one of the primary goals of the new version is to make it truly portable (as Lurk noted above from a previous post of mine). What changes/additions would this community suggest to achieve this goal?

Here's a list of the portability-related changes from the current changelog for the dev version (eg, changes I've already made):

  • Added option to disable history
  • Added option to specify location for debug file
  • Added ability to display log file if extraction fails
  • Changed UniExtract.exe to run from base directory rather than bin\
  • Changed UniExtract.exe to use .ini file for history rather than registry

What else needs to be done? Please see my post on the main Universal Extractor thread for more details, and consider leaving feedback on the MSFN forum (previous link) as well if you have any suggestions. I follow that thread regularly and will be able to much more quickly respond to any questions or problems that are reported.

Thanks,

Universal Extractor 1.4 released

FYI, I just released version 1.4.2 of Universal Extractor. Version 1.4 and newer should be fully portable, as best as I could determine. You can find a complete changelog and download links from the Universal Extractor website.
