I've been thinking about releasing a portable package for MySQL Workbench, but I'm concerned on licensing. While the community edition is GPL, I'm unsure if there would be a problem with the 'MySQL' name and the fact that Oracle owns it. Any thoughts?
I don't even think they have an OSS edition of MySQL Workbench available anymore since Oracle bought them. At least I don't see it on the page. I just see a reference to the fact that there is (or was) one.

'gpl' is in the name of the file, and the second download is the source.
EDIT: I have this installed for work as well. I just checked and the install also includes a COPYING file which is the GPL v2 license.
I thought they were just giving the sources for the GPL and LGPL components. Not the whole thing.
As for packaging the app, it's a gray area. Oracle won't let anybody use their trademarks (hence the OpenOffice.org issues previously). They do have a MySQL trademark use guideline for things that use it, though, as long as it follows specific guidelines. In theory, this could apply.

Just briefly looking over the overall trademarks use, from what I can tell you can only use something like "AppName, derived from MySQL" or something similar. I might have to ask or drop the idea.
Hi,
Is there any news?
