Chrome won't auto update

PortableApps Chrome won't update, directly through the browser: I get "Update failed (error: 1)". And the via the PortableApps platform won't find the outdated Chrome and prompt for the update.

Suggestions?

The only thing that has worked is downloading the .paf.exe file and manually updating each Chrome in place. I don't have this issue with any other portable apps...

Platform

You have to use the platform. Unlike Firefox which has a built-in updater. Chrome use a service that has to be installed on the local machine to update (aka not portable).

The platform will update your Google Chrome Portable instance *unless* you modify the directory name its installed to. You need to let the platform install it to the proper place (aka X:\PortableApps\GoogleChromePortable). If you installed it to the wrong place for some reason, just rename the directory.

Thanks for your update John

I finally came back to check to see if anyone had replied, as I thought it would send me an email when someone did...

So I get what you are saying. Thanks!

And...

Can you think of a workaround or similar to have multiple instances of Google Chrome Portable "installed" AND still be able to have them update?

I use a few differently configured instances of chrome for different things...

Thanks!

Not Yet

There is currently no way to update apps in alternate directories. I've built support for updating additional directories into the PA.c Installer but not the Updater yet. If you place your additional copies in directories of the form GoogleChromePortable_Copy_2, GoogleChromePortable_Copy_3, they will be automatically updated by a future version of the platform.

Thanks John. Should I use

Thanks John.

Should I use exactly that directory naming "_Copy_2"? And start with "0" (zero)?

Also in the meantime, can you recommend the best way to manually update each install, without the error and that preserves my plugins/addons?

Thanks!

No Error

There is no error. The error in about just means the updater isn't present, which it can't be, because Chrome isn't installed.

You can update manually by downloading the installer, running it, and manually adjusting the install directory.

You must start with _Copy_2 which is why I wrote it like that.

Thanks! And thanks for all your work with PortableApps. I love the ease and flexibility it gives me when working with three different machines.

Not updating

Hi John T. Haller,

I am having an issue with chrome portable (multiple installations). My installation in GoogleChromePortable is updated via the PortableApps updater thing that comes up when I boot the computer, but my other installations, in the GoogleChromePortable_Copy_2 folder and GoogleChromePortable_Copy_3 portable etc, are not at all updating.

Please let me know if you can offer any assistance, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Daniel

Not Implemented

The ability to update multiple copies of apps is not yet implemented. The majority of users only use a single version, so it was not as high a priority as some other features and bug fixes.

+1 for the update

I have the same problem in implementing updating copy_2 and copy_3
Please consider increasing the priority of this and implementing this planned feature.

Firefox

I'd recommend using Firefox Portable with the second profile launcher. You can have unlimited profiles all in the PA.c Menu connected to a single instance of Firefox Portable with no muss no fuss. Plus Firefox works *much* better portably than Chrome.

If you have something specific you need in Chrome (extension or some such) I understand it's not an option.

You'll be happy to know that support for automatically updating multiple copies of apps has been added in today's release of PortableApps.com Platform 13.0. Check out the support topic on Using and Updating Multiple Copies of the Same App.

Local Only

Unlike Firefox, which has its own open source updater built into the app that works independently, Chrome is only updated by the Google Updater which must be installed on the local machine. As it's a service, it can't be included with Google Chrome Portable. Thus, unlike Firefox Portable, Chrome Portable can not update itself.

You can either update it by downloading a new copy and installing over the old. Or, the recommended way, use the PortableApps.com Platform which has an automatic updater built in to easily and reliably update all your portable software, currently at over 300 apps and counting, all 100% legal, free, and free of malware and bundleware.
https://portableapps.com/download

Remember, Google Chrome is heavily OS-tied, so things like the updater can't be included, passwords aren't portable without our special hacks, search settings/homepage settings/extensions/extension data are all locked to a specific PC and won't work unless you log into Google, certificates are installed on the local PC instead of portably, etc. It's the least portable of all the portable browsers.

retention of history,themes and apps

Hey john thanks for the quick reply, never thought i will get a reply this soon. If i understood you correctly while installing the new version i just have to change the location of new version of google chrome portable to my current (old version's) location (ie- H://GoogleChromePortable/). This will update my google chrome portable!?. Then my next question is whether this type of installation/upgradation retain history, themes and apps installed in my old google chrome.

Way It Works

Installing a new PA.c Format app over an old one is how upgrades are done. It automatically preserves all your data and even updates it if necessary if the app itself changes. All PA.c Format apps work this way. Just don't try it with non-PA.c Format portable software.

Note that you should be sure to login to Google within Chrome portable, otherwise only your bookmarks and cookies will be portable (no extensions, themes, extension settings, homepage, search settings, etc).

PortableApps.com Format

PA.c is just a short way of saying PortableApps.com.

So yes, Google Chrome Portable is in PA.c Format.

John is simply saying don't try to update apps obtained from somewhere other than our site using this method, as it may not work.

updated portable chrome

Hey gord thanks for the reply and also to john for his suggestions. i updated google chrome portable. I downloaded the latest version of google chrome portable from portable apps then while installing changed the directory to my older version chrome portable. The only disadvantage was after updating this way it removed all my extensions and themes from my old chrome but retained history and bookmarks. Any way thanks for your help Smile

As stated, you MUST login to Google via Chrome in order to preserve extensions, themes, etc. This is by design of the Chrome team. Other browsers like Firefox have no such issues.
