Feature request - Clean up on update application

Hi,

How annoying is it when you have rebooted windows without closing a portable application, only to find that a subsequent update does not "clean up"?

While the menu and associated apps are quite stable, I think a clean up should be performed when updating to save a problem, in between the time when an application is not being used.

Regards

Already Discussed

This has been discussed numerous times, most recently here just 4 days ago: https://portableapps.com/node/42986

Hello,

I read that (first) topic, but I believe I am asking for something different.

Cheers

Close Your Apps

The bottom line is that you have to properly close your apps. This is made easy with the PortableApps.com Platform's built in feature to do so. There is no unified cleanup of apps after a user has purposely or mistakenly killed them at present. One may be added at some point in the future.

Hi John, Thanks for writing

Hi John,

Thanks for writing back.

I understand the situation has been canvassed numerous times over the years (maybe 6 or more Smile but I thought it might be a simple way to implement a feature in the interim.

Kind regards

Platform Exit

The simple thing to do is to use the PortableApps.com Platform's built-in feature to close all your apps for you. It will close all the apps that can be automatically closed and alert you to which ones can't be safely closed by the platform (or by Windows) that you should close yourself. It can even shut down your computer for you as part of the same process.

We'll likely build the ability to restart your computer from the platform as well in an upcoming release.

Trying to clean up from multiple apps and launchers, many of which we don't write and are not responsible for, isn't in any way a simple feature to implement.

Thanks for the tip and heads up!

Thanks for the tip and heads up!

I just found though however, there is no tool-tip to indicate this feature or function.

In fact there are no tool-tips for anything at all bar the applications, so was this intended?

Tool Tip?

What do you mean tool tip? Why would there be a tool tip explaining automatic shutdown?

Automatic shutdown is an option in the Options screen on the Advanced tab. The platform asked you if you wanted to automatically close apps the first time you exited and set the setting based on your answer.

Standard Icon

The power button is an internationally recognized standard on nearly every electronic item in the last 10+ years (look at your Xbox, computer, monitor, etc) and the X is a standard for closing an app on Windows for the last 19 years. When tooltips are added, as they will be in a future release, they'll only say "Shutdown" and "Close" which is what everyone already understands those symbols to mean.

Sounds more like what I was

Sounds more like what I was thinking, even though we are potentially OT.

So can the Shutdown/Restart command be initiated without any interruption from the OS?

I'm still using XP for some things, and I haven't checked it on Windows 8 yet but it is an interesting feature to say the least; that I didn't really pay much attention to until pointed out in this thread.

Windows Prompt

The power icon in the PA.c Platform will bring up the standard Windows power UI. In Windows XP, you know it as the window with the 3 icons for Standy, Turn Off, and Restart along with a cancel button.

An app can't shutdown Windows directly without incorporating calls for the shutdown API. Unfortunately, apps that do so are often flagged as badware by most popular antivirus software, so we elected not to go that route.
