Problems with Firefox / Thunderbird & Lightning

Has anybody else experienced problems with these two from FF 35.0 onward?

I'm not certain when the problems began, but sometime after the New Year I started having problems mainly with the two programs cited crashing. If I try to restart, they crash again. I asked at the Mozilla forums but nobody seemed to know very much about Portable Apps.

I have also had the same thing happen with GIMP and Inkscape which makes me think maybe there is a problem with the platform.

If I delete and reinstall the problem programs, they work once, or maybe twice without crashing.

Until I can find a fix, the desktop versions have been working reliably, but they tie me to a single computer which is often not where I want to be!

Platform is 12.0.5

Drive

If you have issues with multiple apps, it's nearly always an issue with either the drive or the hardware ports they are connected to.

The platform has nothing to do with the apps while they are running.

Try installing them locally on the desktop that you know is working properly. They'll work just fine. Then try to determine if it's faulty USB ports or the drive itself that's dying. Like any tech, drives have a limited lifespan. Drives usually start demonstrating that they are dying by randomly corrupting files or disconnecting. This crashes any software running from them.

I haven't tried the desktop

I haven't tried the desktop yet, but I tried installing Portable Apps platform and Firefox 35.0.1 on a new flash drive this morning, using two different computers, different browsers.

Attempting to install Firefox reports

Installer integrity check has failed. Common causes include ...

More information at:
http://nsis.sf.net/NSIS_Error

Since I was using different computers, different browsers, it looks to me like the file that is currently hosted is corrupted. Is it possible for someone else to check this?

Which Language and Mirror

Which language of Firefox Portable 35.0.1 are you trying to download and what mirror is it downloading from? The SourceForge website will say 'downloading from ...' and list which mirror it is. I just confirmed that Firefox Portable 35.0.1 English is served correctly from my local mirror.

That error usually either means that you're getting an incomplete download from the server or your local computer is infected with a virus and immediately infecting the installer once it's downloaded.

Thanks John, for your patient

Thanks John, for your patient support.

Last download was from http://iweb.dl.sourceforge.net and everything seems to be OK so far (keeping fingers crossed) but I haven't signed into Sync yet.

For now I am vigorously pursuing the virus line of enquiry. I acquired my main computer second hand and it never occurred to me to check it for viruses because I had to recover the system initially, however, when I checked a little over a week ago, I found it was a veritable bughouse.

If I am driven back to investigating problems with the downloads, I will post again. Thank you.

iWeb worked here

I'd checked iWeb here earlier and the file seemed fine.

I'd suggest thoroughly scanning and starting out with fresh files on a known good machine.

Disconnecting the suspect machine from the internet and using a stick loaded with the antivirus and antimalware utilies from here would help.
