PortableApps under Windows 10

Windows 10 will contain a new security feature called Device Guard:
"Microsoft's new Device Guard is aimed at blocking zero-day attacks by vetting applications that try to access a Windows 10 machine and its network. It basically blocks any applications that are not signed by specific software vendors, the Windows app store, and an enterprise itself."

Does/Will PortableApps satisfy the Windows 10 criteria for Device Guard?

Device Guard - Enterprise Administrators

Most software will be blocked under Device Guard according to initial reports. It's specifically designed for a corporate network to be completely locked down so that only apps from Microsoft, the Windows App Store, the Enterprises own apps, and the specific publishers that the Enterprise whitelists are allowed. It's specifically designed so that end users can only run those apps. Any organization setup this way is specifically locking their users out of running any unapproved software at all, regardless of where it runs from. Device Guard will be supported on specific hardware that is Device Guard capable and only when an administrator has specifically enabled it. There are already multiple third party solutions used in enterprises today that perform similar functions, which is why you will encounter some companies where you can't run your own software, whatever the format.

doubt it

I wouldn't have thought so, new thread perhaps?

I mean I can't think why putty specifically would be affected but not other PApps

Windows 10 Black Screen

A black screen in Windows 10 usually signals that you have a Driver problem. It's highly unlikely that the Portable Apps Platform is responsible. Check your PC Manufacturer's Support Site for Windows 10 compatible BIOS and Driver updates.

Platform wallpaper sswapper

This is unrelated to the original post.

With that said, I did a quick test, and it appears as though you are referring to the built-in wallpaper swapper. In my testing, my wallpaper was not swapped in as expected, but rather, I received a blank background. Yours may have gone to black instead.

John, can you split this out to its own thread?

Once that is done, Aitchemm, if you could, please adjust your subject line to say [Bug] at the start of it so we can track it, thanks!

[EDIT] I just tested wraithdu's WallpaperSwitcher, and it is switching the wallpaper as expected. I'll need to do some more checking to see what the difference is in how it's switching versus how the platform is doing so.

Confirmed, Added to Tracker

I can confirm this on Windows 8 and 10. I've added it to the tracker: https://portableapps.com/node/28593

Gord, if you discover anything, please drop a note in there.

UPDATE: It seems that Windows 8 and later won't allow you to set the exact wallpaper path to an external drive. When you right-click a file on an external drive and select it as your wallpaper, it will copy it locally and use that. I've got the platform copying it to TEMP and setting it and deleting on exit without issue now. It'll be in the next release. The bug is updated in the tracker.

Issues with Device Guard?

I'm a home user who took the option of trying the free windows 10 upgrade. The only notice I'm getting from a usb drrive that has the Portable Apps utility on it is the media selections, explore or nothing action. Why does Window 10 Home seem to behave like a business machine? Is that Device Guard keeping Portable Apps from working?

Sincerely,

Jim {James} Farrell

Autorun

You're talking about Autorun/Autoplay which has been disabled for USB drives in all modern Windows variants for many years. You open the drive by selecting to Explore and run Start.exe.
