Correct me if I am wrong, when Firefox updates, I don't use the Firefox updater, instead I am supposed to update Portable Firefox, right?

In all fairness, the FAQ talks about updates, but not upgrades. Some view updates and upgrades as the same thing. Others view those terms separately, with updates being security fixes/patches and upgrades being entirely new versions of the software (ie. the 1.5x version to the 2.x version).
Perhaps you could clarify the FAQ slightly to indicate updating and upgrading (as described above) are both ok.
Mozilla uses the term updates in all their apps, not upgrades. Help - Check for Updates. No Updates found. An update is available, etc. The original poster even used the term update. So, it remains updates.
It doesn't matter how many places you have it or what terms you use, some people still won't look at it.

Well, the original poster titled his post with "upgrading" but the body did indeed talk about "updates." As for Mozilla, whenever I start v1.5 Firefox with this default start page (http://www.google.ca/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:offi...) I'm greeted with: "Upgrade now to Firefox 2 for improved security and better browsing." so this is perhaps the upgrade message that is confusing people such as myself.
"What is the recommended means of installing Firefox 2.x on my portable device?" Would that question be an important entry in the FAQ?
And I do agree that FAQ user-ignorance is an issue that won't go away anytime soon. It's human nature to ask a specific question and desire the specific response instead of spending the effort to determine the answer. AKA being lazy.
1.5 to 2.0 is, at the moment, an upgrade since 1.5 can't yet auto-update to 2.0. But, of course, there's a topic on upgrading FF Portable right on the FFP homepage and on its support page. And it's referred to as upgrading there.

I'll be heading over to the faq shortly. In the meantime, FFP updated/upgraded itself automatically when I first opened it last night, without seeking any approval. It took a while to install the new version (USB drive) and I don't recall it asking for approval.
You can set Firefox to update without asking you.
