PortableApps using OneDrive and Windows 8.1

When installing PortableApps to another device using Windows 8.1 and OneDrive, before the installation of the application make the directory called PortableApps and the file Start.exe in OneDrive "Available offline". This is done by right selecting the directory/file and choosing "Make Available Offline". Wait for OneDrive to finish the sync operation, then install the PortableApps application.

I installed PortableApps on a laptop running Windows 7 using my personal OneDrive folder. I soon after attempted to install PortableApps on my other machine running Windows 8.1 and found that it did not work; warning that it could not write to files. After aborting the installation, when the PortableApps icon was selected on the task bar a wierd green window would pop up and more warnings.

I am posting, as I did not find an obvious explicit answer to the problem, finding bits and pieces of the answer in replies on this and other forums.

Also, if OneDrive was installed when it was called SkyDrive, the name of the folder that OneDrive syncs is likely labeled SkyDrive. This also was not obvious and caused some confusion. I recommend right selecting the OneDrive icon, select the Location tab, then select Restore Default. This will align OneDrive with a synced folder named OneDrive.

PortableApps are really cool and valuable tool, they are usable in a Windows environment with just a little extra work. As a suggestion, it would be great if the app could detect what was mentioned above and provide direction to the user to a resolution during the install process.
