Although I've been using the platform for quite a while, I haven't yet seen a new update for it ever since I started using it. I was just curious; if a new version for the platform is released, will I have to download the new version installer or will the platform automatically update itself?

It's automatic. It'll let you know on startup and run the updater just like updating an app. It'll automatically restart with the new version. The last version was released 4 months ago. The next release will be shortly.
