I need to continue running a browser with a working java plugin. Considering the the plugin is going away (http://www.theverge.com/2016/1/28/10858250/oracle-java-plugin-deprecatio...), will using the portable Chrome Browser allow me to continue using it 'forever'? (Does the portable browser auto-update itself?)
the current versions of chrome do not support this any more.
Soon also Firefox will stop that.
It seems that it will be provided only for IE and Safari.
To prevent your chrome being updated, during other the update process, you can rename the folder where it is.

Would using an older version of portable chrome work? http://google-chrome-portable.en.uptodown.com/old (The portables should not update - right?) But I think I still need to Disable Java updates https://dzone.com/articles/how-disable-java-auto-updates
if you have old chrome and old java installed, then all might work. But well, then you have an old java as security risk and possibly even older chrome portable.
IE will still keep using java, so you might as well this for your work. It is on every normal windows PC, so should work.
