Couldn't there be a way

To manaually configure or copy files from the extracted folder listed at
http://www.melez.com/mykzilla/2005/12/tabbed-message-browsing-in-thunder...
and have it work with PTB?

I was wondering if this would ever be implemented into PTB or if there is any way that one could go about using the profile (or appropriate files) and copy them to PTB in order to make it work?

can be copied right into the PortableThunderbird/thunderbird directory and should work fine. I won't do an official release with anything but official TB binaries, though.

Rumor is that this feature will be moved into TB in the future.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
