Can't activate database in new ClamWin installation

( edited to add error message)

I did post this at the ClamWin forum, and they told me to come here for support "please use support forums on portableapps.com - ClamWin portable is maintained by a different team."

Installed v 90.1.1. on my usb 80 gb Firelite drive.
Using P4 running XP Pro SP2.
Upon first run of the app, I got message "You have not downloaded database . . . .". I guess to keep the portable install small, you exclude the database, so there isn't even an old one in there to start me off.

When I try to download I get this message :

ClamAV update process started at Tue May 08 10:31:39 2007
ERROR: getfile: Unknown response from remote server (IP: 66.111.55.10)
ERROR: Can't download main.cvd from database.clamav.net
Giving up on database.clamav.net...
Update failed. Your network may be down or none of the mirrors listed in freshclam.conf is working. Check http://www.clamav.net/support/mirror-problem for possible reasons.

Long story short, I think my corporate firewall blocks the auto-update download, so I downloaded the cvd file manually.

However, even though I pointed ClamWin to the correct folder in the Preferences dialog, it still does not see the database, and continues to announce that I have not downloaded the database.
The Scan button is disabled.

Is there another step I must take to initialize the database that I downloaded manually? Is there something I have to do to the file itself?

Help ???

granny is getting pretty frazzled now . . . .

Copy to the right place

If you check the layout of ClamWin Portable, you'll see that there are folders in specific places already for the database. Specifically: ClamWinPortable\Data\db. You can't change these from the dialogs.

And ClamWin doesn't ship with a default database. Most AV software doesn't because it would be outdated before most people even download.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

John, thanks for responding.

Yes, the default folder is where I put the database.

I thought that perhaps I needed to "remind" ClamWin where to look, so I pointed it to the default folder.

It is still not seeing the database.

I downloaded from ClamWin site, Main database and Daily update.
Had to use Right-click, Save Target As to download.

The files were named main.cvd.txt and daily.cvd.txt.
I removed the "txt" extension, so now filenames are main.cvd and daily.cvd.

What else do I need to do?
hope you can help me.

You have to remove the

dot, too. Not only "txt" but ".txt".
I downloaded them both from here and it worked as expected.

Well, yes, I had also removed the dot of course.

I guess I didn't think I needed to say that.
My download was from the same page you linked to.

I am at a loss.

I will download again, in case my first downloads got corrupted somehow, but I am not very optomistic.

I'll be back in a few.

No luck.

I have downloaded it with the "save as file type" left at default of text file, and changed the extension.
also tried download with "save as file type" set to "All Files" which saves the file with only its native .cvd extension.

ClamWin continues to not see the database.
I am at a loss.

I ran the PAF installer from the PAM menu install ClamWin.
Maybe I should delete and re-install.

Well, re-installing ClamWin did the trick.

Scan is running as I type this.
My first installation must have been messed up somehow, though I don't know how, since I used PAM menu to run the install.

I guess I need to start offering my resident gremlin better snacks, he obviously is not happy with stale cookie crumbs and dust bunnies. ( if you don't know what a dust bunny is, ask your mom or your wife, she'll be happy to introduce you to them.)

Thanks guys, for letting me work through this thing without laughing out loud in my face.
