"Downloads" folder in "Documents"??

Hi all,

It seems to me there ought to be a "Downloads" folder within the "Documents" folder that the PortableApps suite installer builds - I often download files from the web onto my USB drive while I'm at the office for use at home, and vice versa.

If there's interest, I built a "desktop.ini" file and an icon that is thematically similar to those already in use, which I'd be happy to donate.

Nope

It isn't recommended to download directly to the flash drive as it decreases the speed of the download and firefox as the speed of the USB drive is limited.
It is best to download it to your desktop and then copy it over.

Good advice, Simeon, that I had not thought of -

BUT, regardless of where I choose to initially download a file, it's still a download that I'm going to carry home on the flash drive, right? So I still think a "Downloads" folder would be an appropriate thing to have in the "Documents" folder.

Yea.

I requested the same thing. Smile

You can make a download's folder yourself, just find a nice icon, perhaps on DeviantArt.com, then make a folder called downloads under Documents, copy and ini file from Pitures, or Video, or Music, put it in the Downloads folder, edit it directing it to your icon which you may want to put in the same place as the other icons, then save it, it should come up fine.

And, I agree with your thing that you will be carrying them around with you, I don't want all that clutter under my documents folder. Sad

There could just be made a storage folder, which would cover the downloads folder, and many other one that could be suggested at later points in time.

Yep.

That's a good idea. Maybe we could call it "Random Crap that I have to much of and don't have time to figure out weather I should delete it or not folder".

Suitable, right?

Sure

A folder to store files other than documents, music, video, or pictures would be great. Call it what you like...Downloads, Files, Stuff, etc... But I'll copy programs to install on other computers and a build in way to organize would be cool. A link on the PAM would be great as well.

Well...

Custom buttons are coming soon, so you're covered on that one. Smile

A nice button

I have even made a nice button for a folder that I call the "Others" folder (inside the docs folder) I have taken the folders icons and made a default folder icon.

Ouch!

I think I may not have it anymore...
But I'll search more carefully to see if I find it.

Anyway, the .ini file is easy.

Oh! And by the way, I send it to who (which address)?

EDIT: Nope, I think I don't have it anymore, but if you want I can make it again.

EDIT2: After all I found it. It is just a plain folder, without anything inside it. I'll make an .ini based on Ryan's idea Wink

EDIT3:Put this in a file called desktop.ini in your Others folder

[.ShellClassInfo]

InfoTip=Contains other documents and files that don't fit elsewhere.
IconFile=..\PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu\App\DefaultData\FolderIcons\default.ico
IconIndex=0

I'll give you the icon as soon as I have your email.

Again another EDIT: I have just noticed that you don't want the icon. So, edit the "IconFile" setting to fit your needings.

Blue is everything.

"Others" Icon

I'm interested in the icon if you're still willing to share it. I find myself downloading and storing files for the same reasons mentioned above...

On the go

Ok, the icon is just a default folder, and don't forget that the folder icons are trademarked under PortableApps.com (or something), so don't publicly redistribute it.

I was easy to do, just used Inkscape over the original icons (even though I don't have the sgv by now).

I advice you to place it on the same place where are the other icons.

Blue is everything.
