Unable to install Portable Apps Base

Hello. Immediately after purchasing an 8 GB USB flash drive, I had installed the Portable Apps Base and then through it, several portable applications, including Open Office Portable, Firefox portable and Tucan. However, some files and folders seemed to have became corrupted, and after trying unsuccessfully to get rid of un-openable files with special symbols that appeared out of nowhere, I formated the drive.

After formating, I was able to copy data and music files from my computer's hard drive to the USB flash drive correctly, but am unable to install Portable Apps Base on the flash drive.

It does install, but when I double-click on the StartPortableApps.exe icon on the flash drive (F:\Software\Portable\StartPortableApps.exe), I get various error messages. Sometimes it says that only part of the read request could be executed, and sometimes I get "StartPortableApps.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". I got the latter after scanning the drive with an antivirus (no virus detected) and then checking the drive for errors (F -> right clock -> Properties -> Tools -> Error checking).

I will really appreciate your help for dealing with this situation.

My best guess:

You got a corrupted download. Try re-downloading and installing.

Base

Thanks! I downloaded the Base installer afresh and tried installing from that new file. The result is the same - I still keep getting the "needs to close" message!

1.0.1 Patch?

Did you install the 1.0.1 patch? Without it, it won't work on Windows 2000 and earlier.

Patch

No, I did not. But I am in Windows XP. Do I still need it?

Nope

In that case, try installing it to a local hard drive, even your desktop is fine. If it works, there's a problem with your drive, your USB port or the permissions on the drive (usually due to NTFS).

OK on desktop

Thanks. It installed properly on Desktop. I am assuming that the drive itself is ok, since the apps had installed on it properly before I formated it. Now is there anything I can try to get the functionality back?
