OpenOffice.org logoPortableApps.com is proud to announce the release of OpenOffice.org Portable 3.0 in English, German, French, Italian, Japanese and Simplified Chinese. It's the popular OpenOffice.org office suite bundled with a PortableApps.com launcher as a portable app so you can edit your documents, spreadsheets and presentations on the go. This latest release updates OpenOffice.org to the new 3.0 release and marks the beginning of closer cooperation with the OpenOffice.org team. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Suite. And it's open source and completely free.

Read on for more details...

Features

OpenOffice.org Portable is a full-featured office suite that's compatible with Microsoft Office, Word Perfect, Lotus and other office applications. It's easy-to-use and feature-rich, performing nearly all of the functions you'd expect in an office suite, but at no cost. Learn more about OpenOffice.org...

New in This Release

This release updates OpenOffice.org to 3.0 (release notes) and features an improved launcher and installer with better support for CJK paths and filenames. In addition, extra icon sets (Classic, Crystal, High-Contrast, Industrial and Tango) have been moved to an optional Image Pack download to save space. The new (and much improved) Galaxy icon set is included by default.

Working Closer With OpenOffice.org

This release also marks a milestone as we work more closely with the OpenOffice.org team. We'll be sharing resources and using their QA process moving forward for releases as we become a more official part of the OpenOffice.org world.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

OpenOffice.org Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It will automatically upgrade an existing OpenOffice.org Portable installation without affecting your settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Download

OpenOffice.org Portable is available for immediate download from the OpenOffice.org Portable homepage. You can get the German release from the German homepage and the French, Italian, Japanese and Simplified Chinese releases from the Localization page. Get it today!

Marko or Simeon - There's a single paragraph on the OO.oP homepage that needs translating. Please post when you get a chance. Thanks in advance!

... and translated the paragraph.

Thank You John having this released.

@All: The 3.0 release was a big step, not only building and testing it, also for the wellknown work of John 'behind the scenes'.

Thanks to all the testers and the feedback!

Sorry for the 'delay' but good work takes some time Smile

Seems that ".org" is missing in the download link (between "OpenOffice" and "_Portable")

its the .org thats missing. Added into link and downloading now. Thanks for heads up SakiTC. Should be fixed soon but if download isn't working add .org as per SakiTC instruction above.

I think that's a glitch with SourceForge (happens when I'm logged in). Go back and the second time it should work properly.

Just noticed the new Portable OpenOffice.org splash screen. As well as looking cool I believe it marks a new level of "officialness" for portableapps applications. At least for OpenOffice.org. Congratulations John : )

PortableApps.com Advocate

GIMP Portable does the same thing. I think it's done that way for these apps because there's no way to suppress the internal splash.

John T. Haller's picture

Launch speed has increased a bit within OpenOffice.org itself, decreasing the need for a launcher splash that comes up more quickly. And we got permission from OpenOffice.org to modify the official splash using their trademarks and ours. Smile

OpenOfficePortable\App\Java\java_readme.txt in the English download is in German. >_>

Blame Marko for that Blum I think he's secretly trying to make us speak German.

... to be honest, it will be fixed with 3.0.1.

@John:I think I'll finished a spanish languagepack as plugin following the new installer rules soon ;-). To seperate th plugins from the base packagages was a good idea!

The updater will offer the new version soon and perhaps I'll have the new updater beta ready as Xmas gift Wink

When I try to install OpenOfficePortable 3.0, I get the message that I must first quit OpenOffice applications. But none of these applications are running. When I have even deleted all OpenOffice files, the error message still claims that OpenOffice applications are running.
My OS is Windows Vista. Previous installations have not been problematic.
Anyone who can help me?

Is your local install's quickstarter running (and sitting in the system tray)? You need to close it. For further help, please use the support forums.

man i love this soo much. The PA/OOo splash is soo cool. and this mite be 1 of the best, most awaited release of the month. how bout a PAM alpha now, eh:-P great wrk guys, keep it up!

This release has been anticipated for some time and now HERE IT IS!!! Biggrin Thanks a ton for your hard work. And as always Open Source ROCKS!! Keep up the awesome work guys and girls.

Thanks for the new OO.o 3.0 offering. It's nice for PA to be in sync with the latest version. (I don't write this as a criticism; usually PA is so quick to get new versions out the door that I use it as my "alarm" to update software on my regular computers! I don't know how you do it.)

I'm getting two error messages when trying to launch OpenOffice.org 3.0:

1) "Error loading BASIC of document
file:///H:PortableApps/OpenOfficePortable/App/openoffice/Basis/share/basic/
Launcher/script.xlb/:
[I had to split that line because it wouldn't display completely on the forum preview function]
General Error,
General input/output error."

2) The second is nearly identical, but the long first line ends in "dialog.xlb/:".

After that, OO.o Writer seems to launch and save files normally.

FWIW, I'm running this from a half-empty 8 GB USB drive on a Windows Vista Home Premium laptop.

We're gonna need to delve into this more deeply. Please make a new post in the support forums so we can figure this out.

Hi

I need information for to traslate ooo3 to spanish.

I used this process:

1. Install OpenOffice.org Portable to your portable device as outlined on the support page
2. Copy the directory OpenOfficePortable\App\openoffice\share\fonts\truetype to another location
3. Delete all the files within the OpenOfficePortable\App\openoffice\ directory
4. Copy your local OpenOffice.org files to that same directory (you can usually find them in C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 3\ )
5. Copy the directory you saved above (fonts\truetype) back into the same location: OpenOfficePortable\App\openoffice\share\fonts\truetype
6. Use OpenOffice.org Portable as normal

but, donĀ“t work.

Thanks

... cause spanish package is still ready and will be available soon.

Please start a new topic in the forums around this. As always, support questions go to the forums so people can answer and follow.

This has been discussed and we're not planning on doing it for a number of reasons. First off, it doesn't add much to OO.o as the 3.0 release added the important bits that go-oo wanted (like MS Office 2007 support). Second, it's an unstable development branch, essentially... it is not meant for standard production use. Third, it's a lot of work to maintain OO.o itself and this would effectively double that for hardly any gain. Fourth, the speed claims made by the go-oo folks have proved to be exaggerations in the tests I've seen. Fifth, it's maintained by Novell which has that much-despised patent protection deal with Microsoft and is seen by many as an attempt to sneak some mono or other patent problematic code into the codebase (the patent protection deal only protects Novell and their clients... not the wider open source community).

This has been discussed more than once in the forums. If you wish to join the discussion, please do so there to discuss further.

thanks for the detailed reply John.

i didn't know this had been previously discussed and am glad to know it has been.

also, thanks for mentioning the Novell detail--i was unaware of their connection to Go-oo.
