More Info

Can you give us a bit more info please. What path is it installed to? What operating system version and service pack level? Using the latest GnuCash Portable?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

The program is installed in

The program is installed in "I:\PortableApps\GnuCashPortable". The disk I: is a usb key of 4gb.

I use windows xp SP3.

I have tried with the versions :
GnuCash_Portable_2.2.8_Rev_2_Pre-Release_1.paf.exe
GnuCash_Portable_2.2.4_PRERELEASE1_en-us.paf.exe
GnuCash_Portable_2.2.8.paf.exe

No one works. I have always the same problem.

During the installation, i just add the "additionnal language" because english isn't my native language otherwise i change nothing.

Thank you for your help.

Enable the GnuCash log

You could try enabling the GnuCash logfile. It sounds to me like GnuCash itself is not starting up correctly. To do this:

  • Copy I:\PortableApps\GnuCashPortable\Other\Source\GnuCashPortable.ini to I:\PortableApps\GnuCashPortable.
  • Edit I:\PortableApps\GnuCashPortable\GnuCashPortable.ini and change the 'LogFile=' line to 'LogFile=GnuCashLog'
  • Run GnuCashPortable again.
  • A text file called 'GnuCashLog.(random string)' should now be placed in I:\PortableApps\GnuCashPortable. Open this in a text editor (notepad, etc) and let us know what it says.

Wow..

I have never seen that.. but that at least points to the fact that it is GnuCash crashing and not the launcher since the launcher doesn't create the log file. Have you tried installing the regular version of GnuCash on the same PC to see if that works?

the regular version works very well on the same computer. I have this error with only this portable program. Every other program works.

Same Problem

I haven't fired GnuCashPortable up in a few weeks, but now I am seeing the same problem. I am on 2.2.8 now and the log file is empty. I'm not sure if I ever successfully launched 2.2.8. I do have a local installation of Perl. Might that be munging up the works?

Edit:
Very weird. My copy of GCP is installed on a truecrypt volume. I usually mount this as drive I: which is where I had it mounted when I tried to start it up most recently. So I found a backup of my truecrypt volume and mounted it L: and fired it up. Ok I thought. must be some problem after I upgraded to 2.2.8. Check the version, the backup is 2.2.8 also! so I dismount the offending copy and remount it to P: Fires up perfectly! I would poke around more, but bills (and work) are calling.

YES !!! Now, it's working.

YES !!!
Now, it's working.
I have just changed the letter of the key from I: to K:. After i have launched the program, it has worked. To finish, i change the letter again from K: to I:.

Now, i can launch the program without any problem. I don't understand the problem but i am happy that it's working.

Thank you mstinaff, Shawn Faucher and John T. Haller for your help.

Thanks your suggestion worked

I had the same problem with Gnucash 2.2.9 not loading. It would show two splash screens very briefly and then would not launch. I tried your suggestion of changing the drive letter and it worked. Specifically, I
* Exited PortableApps.com Platform
* Changed the drive letter from E: to B:
* Launched PortableApps.com Platform
* Launched GnuCash 2.2.9 from PortableApps menu which launched fine
* Quit GnuCash and exited PortableApps.com Platform
* Changed the drive letter from B: back to E:
* Launched PortableApps.com Platform
* Launched GnuCash 2.2.9 from PortableApps menu

Now it launches fine without any problems.

P.S. My path did not contain any spaces or non alphabetical characters, which other post stated were a problem.

Thanks again for your suggestion.
