Would it be possible to cater for physically external apps?

Hi All,

(My apologies if my search did not pick this up as an existing post.)

I'm never able to fit everything I need on a single external disc. My needs always seems to stay ahead of the available capacity Beee

One solution I use is to put all my music on separate discs depending of the encoding format. Each music disc has it's own music player (XMPlayer/SongBirg/Foobar) installed on it so I don't have to reset paths and preferences etc.

Now what would be quite useful is if I would be able to add the music player (which is on an physically different drive) to PAM as an external app.

The PAM Mods do not allow you to add programs that's not on the same drive as PAM itself. Espresso/Café Mod does allow you to associate extensions to an application on a different drive. This still means that you have to browse to the drive/file to open it in stead of using PAM and the media players library function.

One way that would work for me is, if the app is displayed in PAM with the drive name appended to it. When it is available, it could be grayed out or even hidden. This would allow me to use the same player on all drives and all I need to ensure is that the (music) drive mounts on the same drive letter on different machines.

This could then also be useful if you organise different (work) projects on different drives, i.e. "xampp - [CustX]" and "xampp - [CustY]" available in your main PAM depending on which customers HDD you've plugged in.

Assuming time is not an issue, would this be an simple addition to PAM?

Thanks
Paul

Not Really

The drives would have different letters each time you insert them, so it would have to go looking and figure out whether or not it was your drive. And what if you insert one before the other? Does it keep looking?

This is less and less of an issue now that 16GB drives are US$20. If you really need alot of space, you're better of with an external hard drive. You can get an ultra portable hard drive (laptop size drive inside) for under $50 for a 120GB. And the prices on both are dropping each day.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Hi John,

I already use a 250GB for PortableApps and related, a 120GB for music and 60GB for virtual machines. I got tired of always having to shuffle things around. As you can guess backups/syncing is a bitch Wink

To me at least it does not matter if it cannot find the drive, e.g. different drive letter or put in afterward. I will ensure that the drive letter is always the same and if it is not in PAM after I've plugged in the drive I should simply be able to refresh for the "hidden" app to pop back.

Anyway, it is probably a pretty unique request and I would have tried to implement it if I had the ability.

Paul

If you are not afraid to do a little programming yourself, you could use something like AutoHotKey to make a program that opens the apps up for you.

Autohotkey is, in my opinion, very easy to use, although you might have some problems due the changing drive letters.

Thanks MaienM,

I'll have a look to see if it seems like something I can do.

Easy

I could of course just use "Bat_To_Exe_Converter" to launch a batch file that in turn launches the app on the remote drive.

If I was using PStart I did not even have to convert the bat file.

Simple and easy enough for me, but I like the "complicated" idea better Wink

All I want is...Arbitrary

All I want is...

Arbitrary shortcuts so I don't have to use windows start menu but since PAM is so god awful slow at loading up even minimised, then I am at a loss as to it's true purpose other than to have a central location in order to execute standalone installer code and a pretty program.

P.S. Dumb this webserver it still takes in text after a hard return.
