What's with the ugly red and white border? The icon looks awesome, but then the border kills it...
That border is certainly because the icon was "print screened" from the menu, and quickly edited in Photoshop/Gimp/Paint using the square selection tool. My advice is that if:
Anyway, the app looks promising and, although I didn't had the chance to test it, I hope you keep working on it.
Blue is everything.
i will try to remove the border and put just the icon
i dont use gimp because i dont know all of the commands and my photoshop just expired
i will learn how to use gimp today i will post the update as soon as it is done
also i was just wondering do all the commands work in the right click menu??
EDIT: ANY Ideas for the tray icon?
I believe you already know that it will have one later that it will need a ini file, and the portableapps format should be used from here https://portableapps.com/node/14939 it should be easily compiled with nsis. You can practice using a premade portableapps source file from a launcher like, 7-zip...etc. It also doesn't appear to have transparent corners.
Are You Using Vista?
EDIT: I fixed the Transparency on the edges... i wasn't aware that it wasn't transparent on other operating systems other than vista
Its just regular xp. I don't know how to maker the launcher but that is why you can start from a premade one like one of the portableapps applications on this website and the source folder is where you can use it to compile the source to make a better launcher. It should also make it automatic so that it will point the flash drive with the portableapps platform.
*The transparency with the icon works better now, now it needs to have a config ini if it is possible.
Also I think you should ask john to see how to get it in that format, all i know is to change a few settings and compile it with nsis.
*Remember to go to this area of portableapps.com https://portableapps.com/development and it is a guild on how to make a launcher.
And thanks for the app
I don't think you should make a tray icon, in my opinion.
BTW, THIS IS AWESOME!!!
And..... the links are broken... both of them...
The Zip can't be found and the Exe takes forever to load, I waited for it for like 20 minutes....
im sorry about that this is the first time i used mediafire and it sucks so im going back to box.net
... You know this kind has a little compatibility problems in XP?
Everytime I try to open this new version, I get failed to initialize errors.
I think it is just a problem with redirecting it to start.portableapps.exe
It must just be that you didn't set the directy after launching it the first time.
Like I said it doesn't have a configuration so it needs to be set everytime you run it, which is bad.
*I think it should be with the portableapps menu folder and autorun first so that it would run correctly after setting up the directory. I'm just an beginner so I don't know how to program it so try asking the author about how to recoding it a little.
*im a beginner to so i dont know how to program that but i will look around and see if i can make the configuration file
I ran it from just browsing to the directory and double clicking on it (in XP). Nothing happened...
BTW, I found out that only happens when I launch it with the PAM Mod Menu.
ooo i didn't know that ill put in the forum that you need the xrx mod
I only got a quick glance at this, but it looks interesting. Here's what i think:
I'm getting a transparency issue with the button: (Pic) with a black border showing up around it. I'm testing from a school board deep freeze Windows XP comp; it only has SP2, this might be an issue.
I would suggest simply not having a tray icon, and having the right click menu located on the button itself, where a user would first expect it to be. However, if this is not possible, use an alternate icon (other than the PA logo) for the tray, it gets confusing having two identical buttons. For the button itself, a high quality .png logo is available on the wikipedia page, but get John's permission to use it first, as it is trademarked. I would also try to autodetect the menu executable instead of promting the user to do so.
John's general policy regarding menu enhancers and menu mods is that they don't go official on their own, but their features are usually added into the platform in future versions. (This is where the menu mods are going: the devs of smithtec menu, geek.menu and the XrX mod are working on a team with John on the main PAM.)
I'm not sure exactly where this would stand, but it's unlikely this would ever be official. Anyhoo, it's still a neat idea, keep it up.
Thats my 2c.
Regards, Brian
i have windows vista and the icon is completely transparent.. ill try to make the right click on the picture on the desktop.. i will try yo get a computer with windows xp and rewrite the script there.. i try to make the installer w/ the code and i just get errors.
Does this work on ubuntu?
ok so the transparency is fixed (Works With XP Now and a couple of bug fixes) but i'm only going to upload the beta 4 when i have ideas for the tray icon.. reply to this comment and say ideas because the PAM Logo in the tray gets confused with PAM Desktop icon tray icon.. and if you can think of a cool name for this ill take them into consideration.
EDIT: Beta 5 Released
Thanks for this
By the way where are the directory settings being set. Like where is it being left on the system.
the config. file is built into the program so the crappy thing is if your drive letter is different on a different computer you have to Click Clear Settings and Click on the icon and look for the StartPortableApps.exe again.. I working so that it auto detects the StartPortableApps.exe Menu.
ok
Just wandering...How are you going to make it launch first before portableapps or is this kind of like an extra thing.
It could be part of the portable apps menu folder or people can just set the autorun themselves anyway.
well i dont know how to make a autorun run more than application.. i guess if i knew how i could make the icon load then PAM.. i look into it.
I have been waiting for an app like this since I started using the PAM, mainly for the reason stated below*, but honestly I think you should ditch the tray icon and integrate all the right click options on the desktop icon itself. There are two main reasons for this:
Most people wanted the desktop icon (inspired by U3, the only good thing they can think of) *because in schools and other public servers (my school is an example of this) they BLOCK ACCESS to the system tray. This means that you can't see anything, i.e. no icons on the sys. tray. Every time I open the PAM in school, I have to either set it to stay visible or open my flash drive folder and double-click on the icon.
So developing the tray icon (which [second reason] right now is being focused on more than the actual app!!!) is defeating the purpose of the app. In schools and other public servers where you can't see the sys. tray, YOU CAN'T RIGHT-CLICK ON AN ICON IN THE SYS. TRAY!
I say the most sensible thing to do is ditch the tray icon and implement the right-click options on the actual desktop-icon.
Also, I don't know if it was possible for the Beta 4 and up, but load the desktop icon image from an image file which users can change to their liking.
And for those who say that the main purpose of this app was to lessen the amount of click to access the PAM, click on the PAM tray icon is faster that using this app!!! Also, for 95.4% of Windows users, the PAM tray icon is always visible once you have access to the sys. tray. (I did my research - according to a Windows 7 seminar and a number of other reliable sources, only 4.6% of Windows users have their task-bar to auto-hide).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: The tray icon transparency is not working in Vista Ultimate. There is still the red border.

Regards,
The 11th grader in great support for this app,
Mikaeel.
i know that the try icon is not. its like that so you don't get it confused with the PAM Tray icon
Tray Icon is Gone You Can Now Right Click On The Desktop Icon. Just Download Beta 6
If this is ONLY for an unofficial PAM Mod, then it shouldn't be posted as a general test. 99.99% of users who use a PAM use the official one.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
In fact, i don't see any reason why this requires the xrx mod, all it does is launch startportableapps.exe, and it has it's own eject script. Could someone explain this?
EDIT: It Does Work With The Official PAM. People Were Telling Me It Wasn't working with the Official PAM Mod but i just tested it and it works fine.
Edit: Beta 7 Released
I installed and ran the beta 5, and I clicked on the desktop icon (not the tray) to get the path for StartPortableApps and I encountered the following error:
http://www.box.net/shared/npvzpykbol
This was under details:
@mikaeel.ghanyyou're supposed to clear out the settings first and then set the directory to startportableapps.exe
*The tray icon is supposed to look like that otherwise you could confused between the real one and the desktop icon tray.
xP
edit:
@John You don't need a modded portableapps platform it even works on the desktop itself.
*the funny thing is I could use this icon as a regular exe launcher even though it isn't intended to.
I tested on a formatted flash drive and the settings of the directory where the launcher goes must be left behind somewhere.
I'm testing a virtual PC to see any results.
*The problem is that it requires .net framework 2
they are built into the program. download the source and look. its Made in Visual Basic 2008
Edit: Beta 7 Released
Beta 7 Released Check it out!
i wasn't expecting such a quick response...thanks soo much!!!
Is there any way to change the eject program? I use EjectUSB with my geek.menu (which this does work with, btw), but the eject command that's bundled with this app causes my open programs to crash rather than close nicely. Thanks.
yeah you can change it but you have to rename it to Eject and put it into the PAMDI folder. ( \PortableApps\PAM Desktop Icon Portable\App\PAMDI)
Okay, I'm encountering something weird. Inside the folder containing the program, there are .ini for Stickies (which I do have installed), but whenever I open any of the pamdi.ini files, it shows all of the settings for stickies. I'm using the beta 7. I haven't checked any of the other betas. Did mine just copy weird, or did something get screwed up?
i think something might have go screwed up let me check that out..
edit: When i was making it in paf i didn't really know how to do it but its fixed now you can Download the Beta 7 Fix here: http://www.box.net/shared/yl320lu8p6
I think it would be easier, if possible, that if you can make a drag-lock option so that it doesn't drag instead of start moving.
For example. The lock option prevents it from moving and still click able and if it is unlocked it can still be clicked but dragged around.
Again, thank you for the application.
The launcher works great, including the autorun.
Edit:
It would be better if you deleted the sticky.ini from the default data before compiling it.
Okay... Don't ask me why but I have two installs of the Menu... a Modified one and the regular one. On the Mod Menu your icon looks different from the PortableAppsMenu one... Why? Because your EXE's Icon doesn't have a 16x16 in it... or a 32x32... or a 24x24
I think you need a better icon...
The icon in App\Appinfo has only 1 icon in the file... which explains a lot... there should be eight...
To fix this...
Get IcoFX and open up that Icon file...
Right click on that left sidebar under your icon(s)... And left of the place you edit the icon.
Select "New Image" and click on 32x32, repeat that with 24x24, and repeat again with 16x16...
Save and recompile.
Changing the picture of the icon is fine...but when I saved it it has an error.
i know i just figured that out and did you even read at the top of this page for the info for that. if you didnt here it is
NOTE: if your going to use the "change Picture" ----> "Your own" command
+PortableApps
--+PAM Desktop Icon Portable
----+App
------+PAMDI
Just making sure things are stable before the final release.
*Just found out if you if you exit the desktop icon it goes back to the default one.
otherwise there isn't a point of going back to recompile a new icon.
i am working on it saving your picture right now but i recompiled it with a new icon already.
Edit: Beta 8 has custom picture saving
The settings aren't saved on the folder or anywhere I know.
I tried two different flash drives and the settings reflect on what i chose recently.
i dont really know where they are saved but now that i think of it they might be stored in the registry
I got a prob in beta 8 that wasn't present in beta 7. When i click on the desktop icon it doesn't bring up the PAM. If launched without the PAM, and then u click on the desktop icon, it launches the PAM; but if the PAM is already launched, it doesn't bring it up.
Also, i got a question. Do you need 2 re-download the autorun and its launcher for every update of the PAM desktop icon?
no you don't have to redownload the launcher. For that error what version of PAM do you have? (Example: XrX Mod)
EDIT: Ill Test that out on a formatted flash drive
The R34 MOD_Patched from PTC
http://ptc.kain-planet.de/details.php?file=283
but the PAM desktop icon always worked
ok are you getting this error:
http://www.box.net/shared/xbnauapy2n
ok are you getting this error:
http://www.box.net/shared/xbnauapy2n
I just realized I have the same problem
I don't get any alert.
All that happens is that the cursor changes to the loading icon for about a second and the PAM Mod Menu doesn't show up at all.
I'm on a limited account with Win XP
Download this and put it on the root of your drive: http://www.box.net/shared/3s0x8mxpb3
The error I get (using the geek.menu mod) is that the menu will open, but under the other windows I have open. This wasn't present in the other betas.
ok here's the fix when the PAM Desktop icon loads right click and change to Never on Top
i recommend using the offical PAM or the XrX mod i never tested it on geek.menu
when i click on it,nothing happens
well i dont know what is happening what version of PAM do you have
https://portableapps.com/node/17634#comment-110234
im sorry about that. i tried the menu mod you had linked and the Desktop Icon worked perfectly fine. try reinstalling the menu and reinstalling PAM Desktop Icon. then download the StartPortableApps.exe from the link in this comment: https://portableapps.com/node/17634#comment-110260
and put it on the root of your drive
Firstly, when you change the display pic to a custom one and then reselect the default, it changes. Buts after you close and re-open the desktop icon app, it displays the previous custom pic.
Secondly, can you make it so that it remembers its last position on the screen (X and Y coordinates) so that it starts up in the same position it was in on the previous close?
Thirdly, how to hide the splash screen? Please give specific instructions as I already made a StickiesPortableSettings.ini file and a Notepad++PortableSettings.ini under Data\settings and it didn't work. The reason I did this was because under the Other\Source folder the PAMDIPortable.ini has this:
but the readme has this
So which is it? PAMDI, Stickies or Notepad++?
And finally, can I change the icon on the launcher in the root of the drive?;...
...and can I hide the small window that pops up for like half a second after you launch the Launcher? It appears about 1-2 seconds before the splash screen (it's not the splash screen).
This is it here; check the screenshot:
http://www.box.net/shared/7kejyahusf
i thinl i might have said this already i am new with the portableapps format so i used the stickies portable source and i changed it up to work with the desktop icon.
that window that pops up is just the "loading window". if that window fully loaded it would say "LOADING..." thats all that window is. i can get rid of that window if you want. here is a preview of it: http://www.box.net/shared/crs6g79s2z
no i cant make it so it saves where you move it.. i dont know how :/
ill fix that so when you click default it loads the default next time instead of the custom image.
ill have the fix up for that in the next 30 mins
EDIT: if you want to change the icon open the source in visual basic 2008 you can download the source here: http://www.box.net/shared/4it8f1q9j9
after you change the icon you have to build it again and go to the release folder and copy the launcher file to your drive
sorry its like 2 weeks later and i fixed that issue with The Default + Your Own Menu Buttons. there was a little bit of a bug
if figured out where the config file is stored
its stored this directory:
C:\Users\\AppData\Local
im working on putting it with PAMDI.exe
Great! That should make it completely portable right?
yes it will make it completely portable but i have to change the custom picture thing
Its is Now Completly Portable!!!!
/me downloads
Do You Like It Now?
Yes, so far it works great. I haven't done extensive testing yet. Going to make a custom image first.
ok cool after you finish doing that make a
Screen Capture of you custom image so i can see it
I assume you are still working on the saving position thing.
I have noticed a little bug. I can't really use the rightclick menu on the desktop icon, because it pops up the menu and about a second later opens PAM closing the popup menu. If there is any way to specify onleftclick or onrightclick rather than onclick for the PAM opening part you might want to look into that.
I'd also like to see different states. Normal, hover, pressed. I don't know if that's possible, but it would definitely be cool.
EDIT
Really strange. Last night I had a problem where multiple (6) PortableAppsMenu.exe were showing in task manager. Now I cannot reproduce that or PAM knocking out the PAMDI popupmenu.
It is however opening PAM underneath other windows for some reason.
I have both problems. I will have multiple instances of my menu running in task manager at random times (upwards of 50 sometimes), and when Desktop Icon will open my menu underneath all of my other windows, making it useless. I haven't updated it in a few weeks, so there may be an update that fixes that. I have yet to figure out how to recreate the multiple instances, though.
you can not create multiple instances of PAMDI
Not PAMDI, PAM. Multiple listings of PortableAppsMenu.exe in task manager, though only one tray icon, not like actually running two copies of PAM which creates separate tray icons and PAMs.
OK, when the PAMDI Gets Clicked it loads startportableapps.exe which runs PortableAppsMenu.exe.
maybe your system is running it but not running it(If this Makes any sense to you).
the other day i was testing PAMDI with the task manager at the side. i noticed when i clicked PAMDI it runs another instance of PortableAppsMenu.exe and then the PortableAppsMenu.exe ends so there is only 1 instance of PAM Running.
it may be a windows glitch because i have not yet seen more than 2 PortableAppsMenu.exe running it the Task Manager.
I'm Running Vista With SP1 and I have The Official PAM
yes im working on the save position but that would be a user.config file so it would store on the computer :/ not the flash drive
the right click works fine for me.. it might be a bug on xp ill check it out just give me a few... (i have to install xp)
the launcher is Broken now don't use it till i post a update which should be in like
20 minutes...
i know im working on fixing pam loading under every thing here is a temporary fix for now till i get a new update out... right click and click never on top. open the PAM menu. then right click and click always on top
Edit: there is nothing wrong with the launcher it was PAMDI i fixed the error though.. the file name was wrong
When I use the .PAF version. I start it up and nothing happens. No desktop icon.
ok... it works fine for me i did a clean install of windows xp and vista in virtual pc and it worked perfect... What OS do you have + Which Service Pack?
I tried it on the school comp. let me try here at home
your school computer probably blocks unknown programs or net framework programs.
it works at my school because my schools pc's don't block software only internet pages
My schools the same way but the one launcher in the root directery. Net Framework 3.5 kinda messes it up.
I got it working and also Thanks to TimClark to Helping me Fix my autorun too!
ooo ok thats good.... How Do you Like it??
if you have an more problems let me know...
You know the Pamdi.ini from the default data that goes into the data folder because it must have been from old sticky program.
I would recommend should be replaced by the image.ini since it actually has its use.
You could also change the name of the image or pandi or whatever.
thats a good idea thank you i will fix that really quick and re upload it.
Edit: i got rid of PAMDI.ini and the office "Store" file thing and put image.ini in the source thing to build the Portable Launcher
cool whats your Autorun? is it different from mine?
Had to change it in the regisrty
anyone know how to get this officially released
You need to try and catch John on the IRC and then ask him. If this application has proper testing and there is proof to show it does work well, then I think John will make this official.

Just wanted to update my list of suggestions\bugs:
The show\hide is a new idea, I just threw in there. It would let you have your PAM set to stay visible, and just use PAMDI to open and close it.
