[FIXED] Variables Bug

Throughout my experience with Toucan I have been fortunate that my portable has always used F:\ both at home and at 2 workplaces so I have never needed to use the portable variables functions. However recently, my sister plugged in her USB and then my portable hard drive. Her USB took the F:\ and my portable the G:\. Now whenever I plug my drive in it is assigned G:\. This is an issue as all my jobs and scripts in Toucan are dependent upon F:\.

I realize I can map the drive but I would strongly prefer not to. This sort of situation is likely to repeat over time (I'm probably lucky it hasn't happened a long time ago) so I decided it was time to figure out the portable variables. I tackled the manual but still couldn't figure out to insert the drive variable to Toucan use relative paths Sad Can you please help explain how I do this in "For Dummies" terms = )

Experimentation Results

I ended continuing to play with this and turns out I was having as much troble as I thought. It may be a bug in Toucan as I tested this with a few jobs and they all end up saying-

15:03:47	Can not enumerate files in directory '@drive@\Documents\Miscellaneous\Games\Game Profiles - Saves\Civilization 4\' (error 3: the system cannot find the path specified.)"

I checked and looks like the job is carried out but this error message still comes up. Can anyone confirm?

[Suggestion]

Make it so you can preview sub-folders and files contatined even when using drive variable and make it so the button that expands all sub folders with the selected folder is able to work with drive variable.

So

which bit of Toucan were you using? Hopefully I will have a screencast up later that might help explain how to use them a bit better.

Sync and Backup

With both Sync and Backup jobs.

Bug Fixed In PR3

The variables bug is now fixed in PR3. Additionally the "suggestion" I made as to fix a symptom of the variables bug so with that bug fixed the suggestion is redundant.

Many thanks Smile

EDIT: Too soon. This may not be the same bug but I think it is related. I found that for my backup jobs, Toucan still cannot find the files. I think this may be because the drive letter the original files are on has changed as well as the destination drive letter (Both are the same drive is the same drive Toucan is running from). Paths are the still the same.

Is it possible to get another variable that makes Toucan use relative paths in addition to the current @drive@ one that makes Toucan use the drive it's running from?

So I'm guessing Toucan stores the location of the source file(s) for backups using absolute paths, eg. includes drive letter, and is currently dependent on it?

Watch out

You seem to be discussing bugs with test releases and not confining yourself to the "official" pre-release thread.

That's evidently a hanging offense around here, but I suppose that the brownie points you've been accumulating (thanks given to every possible release) might shield you.

Neutron...

Do you try to be so vexatious or is it just part of your personality?

You are correct in your first statement and that is my bad. However your second statement really isn't necessary nor appreciated.

Lets

just be clear here, I personally have no problem with these posts being in the Toucan forum, however John prefers them to be kept with the topic, and really it is up to him.

I can personally understand why you would want to post a new thread, it is very easy to loose stuff in a long thread.

As for why this thread is here and yours got deleted I have not idea, but I doubt very much that it has anything to do with 'brownie points'.

I did it

John made clear that I was doing things wrong by posting a new thread. He told me to move it and to delete the thread I made. So I deleted the thread.

I agree that the threading on this board makes it very easy to lose stuff, especially when it gets long.

For instance, if the thread goes into multiple pages, and someone puts a new post into the first page, things get broken. Try looking at "new" posts and you'll see the first one on the first page, and when you try to see the new on the second page, you can't because the entire thread is marked as already read.

And yes, in any group or society, people act differently to each other based on their perceived strength/usefulness/friendliness/brown-nosing. The different reactions we see are proof of that.

And since none of this has anything to do with Toucan itself, or the pre-release, or bugs, I guess this is a mistake, too.

Jim...

I'm not going to drawn into an online sniping session especially on a forum like PA's that caters for ages all the way down to pre-teens. You are entitled to your opinion though you should demonstrate some foresight in expressing your views when they can be offensive to others.

Thank you

I appreciate that you allow me my opinion.

And thank you, I do demonstrate foresight. Evidently your definition of foresight differs from mine.

You need to stop

Jimmy,

Respectfully, you need to stop with the snide comments.
Your problems with John, and perhaps others, about code/dev stuff is beyond my sphere/purview, your behavior is not.

Your comments to horusofoz are out of line.
Please Stop
