i really like Toucan for writing folder timestamps and the high transfer speeds.
The problem is when I sync from PC to my NAS it takes forever! for most of the time I think its just checking existing files on the remote NAS - I can see high transfer rates from the NAS to the PC which makes me wonder if its checking the whole remote file, not just the hash or timestamp.
I'm using 2.1.0 pre-3, sync, retain file timestamps and attributes, mirror. PC is XP. NAS is freenas (freebsd based).
Any way to speed this up and keep timestamps?

I'd guess it's a hash. Remember for a has it has to read in the whole file. Maybe there could be a switch to disable hash comparisons for slow stuff like NAS.

a switch to stop hash checks would be great for me, and just do updates the old crusty timestamp way. part of the problem for me is syncing 750G of stuff (not quite portable).
is there a previous version of toucan which didn't do a file hash check? (and which still did timestamps, which i think was v1.2.2, right?)

still be using timestamps in the update mode, however if you wish to disable the new stuff you can do in the latest pre-release, just look in to help file in the Sync section
And wow, 750GB, I think that might be a record!

I used to use FreeCommander Portable, but with every new release some bug gets fixed but other introduced so you spend most of your time is a work around state.
For example, currently it fails to create the directory on the destination (linux NAS), but rather cancels the sync.
Anyway, the sync on it is one of the best I've seen, i.e. comparable to BeyondCompare and comparing large directory structures 4000+ with 30K files (PortableApps folder) takes about a minute. This was something that prevented me from migrating to Toucan on an earlier evaluation.
However your mirror function suits me down to a T and the performance also seem to be much improved in ver 2.1.2.

I am glad you like it, performance with large files sets seems to be good at the moment, I was backing up my home network the other day onto a USB hard disk and Toucan was very close to saturating the connection, hopefully with a little bit more work it will get there

FreeCommander had a setting to ignore a 2 second difference between timestamps. I'm not sure if this was because it introduced the mismatch or whether it is an inherent problem when synching across disparate operating systems. So I'm expectinge that once the initial mirror run has been done to get rid of such mismatches things would speed up.
for example, last night it took me 6 hours to mirror the following folders;
- Documents: 12.5GB / 4000 files
- Software: 36GB / 5000 files
- Current Project: 540MB / 700 files
- FFP: 135MB / 600 Files
- TBP: 2.3GB / 1300 Files
I was using a 100MB LAN connection via a router to a NAS (LinkStation) running at 25% average utilisation.
The method I used was to first do a preview and then perform the actual mirror.
Tonight I will try connecting directly to the NAS or switching off hash compare and see if things improve as I haven't even started with my pictures and VM folders...
