Portable CMD

i don't no if this is possible, but could a portable version of the windows Command Prompt be made. Or of command.com

I need this because i'm generally using a school PC with seriously a seriously limited account, (CMD obviously disabled) and I need to run some batch files.

Even better would be a java prog dat somehow piggybacks off of CMD.exe or command.com because running java apps isn't disabled.

Thanks for the help and thumbs up to JTH

Try copying cmd.exe from your home computer and just renaming it, it should work at school.
The path for cmd.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe

(Your going to have to just search for it in there)

4NT is a powerful replacement for CMD.EXE, the Windows command processor and you can install it to your flash drive.

TCCLE

There is a later version under the Take Command Lite brand name from the same publisher (who also put out 4DOS 'way back when') called TCCLE which is free.

Portable Command Prompt

What the hell is with that anyways? Unless it does something really cool that I'm not aware of, it's kinda wasting a lot of space. I mean, seriously. It's 294 KB (524 on disk) vs my 31.6 KB (36.0 on disk)? WTF? As far as I can tell, the only difference is that mine does a pop-up thing, then disappears, and reappears. Other than that little startup issue, (which is necessary) they do the exact same thing. And I'm a total n00b when it comes to C. So what's so special about "Portable Command Prompt"???

It shows a lovely PA.com splash screen. Why would anyone want a program w/out it?

Well

Well, for starters, there's no splash... so your snarky statement about it is false. Secondly, it makes it easy to customize your command prompt, have one start with the stuff you like included in the path, be able to easily temporarily turn on auto-completion via the registry and launch in specific paths so it can be used from FreeCommander and other stuff. All things you can't do with a simple batch file or the C launcher the other author posted.

If you don't like it -- since you don't seem to like anything we do but like to hang out and criticize everything we do -- fine. But you'll just have to accept the fact that a lot of people wanted it. I created it when people specifically asked for it... I hadn't even thought of it as something people wanted. And I updated it when they asked for specific features (enable auto-completion, pass in paths from portable file managers, etc). That's why it's been downloaded 1/3 of a million times.

Come on, be serious. All

Come on, be serious.
All these things except for temporarily turning on auto-completion not only can be done w/ a batch file, they can be done easily.

BTW it has a huge bug: doesn't support command line parameters.
And such bugs are the main reason why I keep saying not to use launchers unless really necessary. Bugs happen and KISS helps reduce them.

Come On

What command line parameter are ya lookin for here? It handles a path passed as a command line parameter and starts in said path. What else do you need? If you want to be able to pass a command line parameter into a custom batch file, that's not what this is about.

This is nice and simple. The only thing the launcher does is create a default batch file if you don't already have one, ensure that COMSPEC is setup right and if it isn't set it up for Win9x or Win2K+ appropriately, get the passed parameter and start in that directory if needed and handle the registry swap for auto-completion (which as you said you can't do in a batch file so we need a launcher anyway). Not including comments and standard settings in the file, it's under 100 lines of code. And it works exactly like people want.

If it's not about working

If it's not about working like a command prompt then what is it? Command prompts support parameters for a reason.
But that's not my problem anyway, only your users'.

Ok

First, you say it's too complicated. I point out that it does about the bare minimum. Then you say it has a bug, but the other suggested solution wouldn't solve that either... so what exactly are you looking for? Command Prompt Portable is designed to be a simple and easy way to get a customized command prompt in your menu than you can easily add stuff to, enable auto-complete, etc. It also lets you do a
"Open Command Prompt Here" style thing from portable file managers like FreeCommander. That's what people wanted. That's what they got. And it serves that purpose very well. For people who want more, there's also Console Portable and another one. And after 1/3 of a million downloads, no one is really bitching about it except you (and you bitch about every single thing we do and always say something like "But that's not my problem anyway, only your users'" when no one else is complaining) and one other dude who's been here 3 hours, didn't bother to find out the things it actually does or includes and triple posted his complaint.

OK, I'll put it simple: I

OK, I'll put it simple:
I think that quality PA.com software varies from harmful to average. With the former more numerous than the latter. I think that expressing this opinion backed by examples is what you call bitching. If so, there's a lot of people bitching at you. Just not here, they find out that it won't change anything. Except that newbies usually come here, so it's good if this forum contains not only information what your launchers do (in some cases-nothing) and what they don't.

And "complicated" doesn't contradict "limited". Your site doesn't mention limitations, so it's correct to assume there are none.

Ok

Then where are the examples? You never give any. Or you give half-assed arguments like you are now. With a mix of snarky comments thrown in. If you have a GENUINE bug report about an app, I'm all ears and happy to make changes. But if your sole argument is gonna be splashes suck (CPP doesn't have one, all that do can be disabled) or launchers suck (I know you love JauntPE and ThinApp but neither are an option at all for legal and licensing reasons and there is no open source option for a similar approach) or what have you then there's no point.

The Command Prompt Portable homepage lists EXACTLY what CPP does, no more no less. It started out really simple. And then someone asked for the ability to do auto-complete so it was added as an option. And then someone else asked for the ability to pass in a path to start a command prompt there from FreeCommander specifically, so that was added to. If there's another feature someone wants, we'll probably add that, too.

Whether you accept it or not, we provide a solid set of software and tools that are very easy for folks to use. We get consistently great reviews by users and press. And when people ask for additional features and functionality, we work on adding it in if the cost-reward ratio makes sense... and sometimes even when it doesn't. I'm more than happy to get constructive criticism, but that's not what you do. You make snide comments about our users suffering and say things are limited but you never present an alternate solution or better explain what you're looking for. If you create a new post about a bug report, feature suggestion, etc for a product we offer, I'll address it like any other.

I did give you an example of a bug above. It's not the first time we have such discussion: not accepting a bug doesn't make your software better.

What?

But you still haven't told me what the bug is. What is it? Not passing command line parameters into the command processor or to the batch file? Why would you need to within the purposes of CPP? You can pass the path and it'll open there. Is there a reason you'd want to pass in something else? I ask because we're updating all our apps for Windows 7 so CPP will get a new version and if there's a reason for a new feature, I'll add it.

And there are disagreements about what constitutes a bug and whether a feature is worth adding all the time. That's why there's a WONTFIX and WORKSFORME in all bug trackers. Some bugs aren't bugs. Some bugs are too costly too fix. Some add too much complexity. Some are better handled upstream. And some are easily worked around.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I meant /k. But looking at

I meant /k. But looking at the cmd help (XP x64):

Starts a new instance of the Windows command interpreter

CMD [/A | /U] [/Q] [/D] [/E:ON | /E:OFF] [/F:ON | /F:OFF] [/V:ON | /V:OFF]
    [[/S] [/C | /K] string]

/C Carries out the command specified by string and then terminates
/K Carries out the command specified by string but remains
/S Modifies the treatment of string after /C or /K (see below)
/Q Turns echo off
/D Disable execution of AutoRun commands from registry (see below)
/A Causes the output of internal commands to a pipe or file to be ANSI
/U Causes the output of internal commands to a pipe or file to be
        Unicode
/T:fg Sets the foreground/background colors (see COLOR /? for more info)
/E:ON Enable command extensions (see below)
/E:OFF Disable command extensions (see below)
/F:ON Enable file and directory name completion characters (see below)
/F:OFF Disable file and directory name completion characters (see below)
/V:ON Enable delayed environment variable expansion using ! as the
delimiter. For example, /V:ON would allow !var! to expand the
variable var at execution time. The var syntax expands variables
at input time, which is quite a different thing when inside of a FOR
        loop.
/V:OFF Disable delayed environment expansion.

All make sense in portable use.
And I was wrong, turning completion on / off is easy from a batch too. And doing it w/out accessing registry is better because it won't affect local machine even in case of a crash and a background process doesn't waste memory.

Batch / How?

Most of that is really only useful when using a batch file. We only ever had one person ask about running their own batch files with it. It would be pretty easy to enable it to switch from using the built in with the path switch at the end to allowing it to pass the full command line on to the command interpreter (like 3 lines of code), so I can implement that in 2.1 if people are interested.

As to the command completion... how can you enable it from the command line and have it work like normal? Every Microsoft document I've read on it has said that it is off in Windows 2000 and up and you have to change the registry to get it working as people expect. On Win2K and up you can do cmd /f within the batch file but that only gives you CTRL-D and CTRL-F to complete directories and folders instead of being able to hit TAB like people expect. Some people want TAB, so that registry swapper is in there but off by default.

Ah Ok

Too bad as I'd love to be able to avoid the registry on that, too.

I'm gonna add in cmd /f to the default batch file (with a corresponding note on the CPP homepage) and add in the code to pass the command line to the interpreter for the 2.1 release next week.

If you have any similar suggestions on other apps, please feel free to make a post.

Anyway, it (if memomries serve and were correct) had its own command prompt engine.

I've never made a command

I've never made a command prompt for windows before, but I imagine it can't be much harder then checking the path(s) for a program name which matches the command the user types in and executing it (with possible arguments)
