I have downloaded the platform. I have placed a document in the documents folder. Is there a way to have that document open on the screen upon insertion of the thumb drive?

You could write a very simple launcher with NSIS using the ExecShell command, although as I recall ExecShell is really slow... Then, with the new version of the platform you can set programs to autorun. There may be an easier way, but this should work.
If I may ask, what is the document? Perhaps depending on the content you want displayed there might be a better way to do it.

It is medical info (txt doc). I want a medical facility to plug in the drive and have my info pop up.
Install Notepad++ on your portable device. This text editor has the nifty feature of remembering documents you had open when you exited the program.
Open the document in question in Notepad++. Now close it. Back on the PAP menu, right click Notepad++ Portable and choose Automatically Start. (You need the 1.6 Public Release 0 for this feature, I believe; for that, see the Beta Testing topic. Don't worry, it works fine.) Quit the Platform and start it back up again to ensure that Notepad++ starts automatically and opens your file.
Having read about the situations people face at their work with using USB devices and Security, what are the chances that a Dr. or nurse are going to plug an unknown usb flash drive into their hospital computers? It's also documented here, quite frequently about the Posters IT guy having the system "locked down" to prevent anything (virus, spyware) from being introduced into the companies networked computers. I think the OP might be a good idea, but I am curious as to whether a Doctor has to follow the same security guidelines as some of you here (concerning computer security).
The same thing occurs to me. However, there are quite a few out there selling thumb drives for medical purposes, including MedicAlert. On the other hand, after asking at several medical facilities, no one knows what I'm talking about. It doesn't cost anything to carry the drive on my keychain and it gives me something to do.
what you are talking about. I have researched several of these, U3 has an application, but there are others as well. But after reading some of the posts here, I am still curious as to whether Dr.s are aware of some of the risks associated with plugging an unknown drive into a hospital computer. I read another article somewhere, where an IT guy, to prove a point, loaded a program onto several flashdrives, dropped them randomly in front of a business that hired him and then several days later, he showed up at the business with printed copies of what were supposed to be confidential documents. The program on the flash drives, "phoned home" all the information that was on the computers of the employees who ignorantly picked them up and plugged them into their work computers.
