Thanks Tanisthalon = )

I noticed on running this a command window opened up in addition to the base app. Not sure if this regular behaviour as I haven't used Blender before. You can find a screenshot showing the window here.

Also below is a regshot. Hope it helps.

Extra window

The window that opens prior to Blender running, and remains open, is the console. I originally considered hiding this in a previous release. After thinking about it and a discussion with LOGAN-Portable it was decided to leave it intact and visible. It is a handy tool that lets you know what Blender is doing, if Python is there and where items are been saved and so on.

Thank you for your concern though.

Just wondering as to why songbird is showing in your regshot, maybe a re-check on your part?

Photobucket may also be of interest to you for storing image files?

The Songbird entry is

The Songbird entry is probably there from Songbird Portable not finishing cleaning up before running Regshot. Nothing to do with your app. I'll have a look at Photobucket. It's just I already have a Mediafire account and try to minimise the number of services i sign up to. Plus I like being able to arrange all my files (images and others) into a folder structure.

Anyway that's irrelevant I'll consider Photobucket.

installer.ini

You can change the label of the optional section in installer.ini. Take another look at the spec, or look at BPBible 0.4.4 Pre-Release 2 which uses an optional section for resources.

Have you still got the problem with MSVCR2009? If so, the way that needs to be fixed is by modifying the manifest, if you need more info I'll ask my brother for more Smile

Manifest

Blender Foundation began releasing it prepacked at 2.48a onwards so that's no longer a problem. It was only missing in 2.48.

Thanks for the tip on the .ini. I will check it out and update it shortly to Development Test 2.

Development Test 2 released.

Python

Firstly did you install Blender Portable with the Additional Resources selected?

Secondly is there a Python25 folder in the App folder?

Thirdly does the command window that opens when Blender is run start with:
Compiled with Python version 2.5.2
Checking for installed Python... got it!

Finally are you trying to run Python on it's own from the BlenderPortable folder? If so it is not designed for that. Python is an additional resource so that other Python scripts can be run in Blender. For Python Portable please check here. I dropped the support for Python as Python was moving further on then the version for Blender. As such TaffinFoxcroft kindly took the reins.

OK

It's good that you got it sorted. After all we are here to help where we can. Also have a look at the help.html in the BlenderPortable folder for other answers to questions you may have.

Thanks for your work =)

Hi thanks for your work, I was thinking about start doing a portable blender by myself as my first portable app. I know that I could just paste the blender folder to my pen and running it directly(and I really have xD) but I think it would be nicer to have blender on portable apps platform 'cause it's so much easy to keep track of my portables and of course more organized.

Well I just wanted to thank you and to say that blender foundation released the 2.49a with some bugfixes, not the 2.49a that you have. If you could update your app I'd be much appreciated. And I'll be testing your development and reporting some bugs that I may find, I would like to help you to make blender portable a official release, 'cause blender rocks !!! xD

Thankyou

Thanks for your kind comments.

The current version is the 2.49a release from Blender Foundation.

Where this differs from the zip file from the Blender Foundation is: you have the option of installing Python 2.6.2 as an Addional Resource when running the installer, saves animation images by default to the BlenderPortable/data/settings/.blender/tmp/ & finally it is in the PortableApps Format.

Final

We've had some version of this in test for quite some time now. Are you comfortable calling this a final release?

Pretty happy

I believe the only error that needs correcting is that during install, when you move over Additional Resources, I spelt language incorrectly. It's just a quick change to the installer.ini. I think off the top of my head I put an extra a in there.

Beyond a few extra people to test it and provide some more feedback, I believe it's good to go.

If you get chance yourself John, have a quick check and let me now if you are also happy with it as a whole.

Hmm

No, maybe I didn't explain myself too well. The build that you have now was updated with some fixes a little after you upload this 2.49a, the new was made this fix "Note: Windows build 2.49 has been updated Sunday June 21 to fix DV-AVI files." and I think yours its prior to this fix... The folder of the new one it's called "blender-2.49a-avifix-windows"...

Sorry to bother you, and if I'm mistaken, it's just the build date of yous its before this one too.

[edit]Yours is from 19-06-2009 and the other with the fix is from 21-06-2009, just a few hours after you made the development 3.[edit]

Date

It maybe that there was a quick update with no documentation. I got the file on the 21st when it was released. After checking individual files blender.exe and blenderplayer.exe are dated the 19th whereas the files I just got again from BF are 21st. All others seem the same.

I will update it tomorrow for you, if you do not mind holding on for around 19 or so hours.

Edit: Just checked at http://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.49a/ and it seems the case that they rushed a quick fix after releasing it.

No, I really don't mind... I just wanted to warn you about the fix that was made Smile

So tomorrow I'll come here to grab the updated version and start testing right away...
And so with blender updated with the fix and a slight correction on the installer I most certainly think that this will go to the final phase, because until now I haven't find any bug on your portable.

Thanks again for your dedicated work Smile
Keep up...

Ok

Repackage the fixed files and we'll release it tomorrow.

And rather than "Additional Resources", let's just call it "Python" since that's what it is (and it'll make sense to the people who need it).

Wow

I just pressed the bookmark by mistake(I intended to press another one) and "puff" there it was, already updated... It was made in a impressive time, I think it was just a case of replacing all the files(maybe, I'm new to this PortableApps scene so I can't really tell for sure) but it's still impressive.

Thanks for your work man, tomorrow's afternoon I'll start testing ^^

PS: You didn't need to, but thanks for giving me some credits, I wasn't such a big deal xD

A Question...

Hey, I have something to ask... I noticed that you have the .blender folder and plugins folder in Data>Settings, App>DefaultData and App>Blender... Is that really necessary? As far as I know the portable interacts directly with Data>Settings... And if we want to add plugins for example(as I did) we copy them to Data>Settings>plugins to either textures or sequences folder... But do I need to copy them to the other plugins folders too?

By the way, everything I tested so far it's working well...

Edit: Nevermind I figured that out already, as far as I understood when the program runs the first time whats inside the App>DefaultData goes to Data...

Correct

Those are the files that Blender uses and are/can be altered by the user. This is part of the PortableApps Format and is reasoned better here.

An idea...

I had an idea, I'm doing some modifications to make blender more portable(in my opinion)...

I hope you don't mind...
If you don't want, I'll just do it for myself...

In about 30 minutes I think I'll have it uploaded so you can see...
And write some modification notes...

Ready

Well here it is... (almost 1hour later but here xD)

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?iom0kzwozft

I'm not sure it will work because the given links on FilePaths are based on my computer but I would like someone to test it...

The modifications are texture and sequence plugins in plugins folder, and specified folders to each one of the file paths... The folders are on DefaultData before installing and on Data after installing and the plugins the same...

Please someone test if it's working or not...

Edit: If isn't working I'll just suggest to add the plugins that I added on DataDefault>settings> texture and sequence... And maybe with would be better to put in the installer the option to put them or not but I still don't know how to do that. Just a opinion

Paths broken

Unfortunately all the paths are specific to your own pc, e.g. the original tmp folder now writes to C:\Documents and Settings\PC-Familiar\Desktop\BlenderPortable\Data\settings\Temp\.

Well at least I tried, but it's a pity that it doesn't work because I thought that it wasn't such a bad idea... If existed a way of giving paths only related to the BlenderPortable folder it would be perfect...

Well do you think that it contains something that worth putting in your release?

Opinion

Well sincerely I don't think your development needs more improvement, it's perfect like it is, I just tried to do that because I thought it would be more convenient to have the folders necessary and the paths linking to it for a more ready-to-use app... Having the plugins it would spare the trouble of manually putting them... But mission failed xD

Well about the testing I did some testings: saving, open files(small and big ones), some stress render jobs, scripts, editing of preferences, themes, paths, and a bit of navigation through the app. Modeling and animation only a bit because I thought i wasn't relevant... All went well, without any errors... I think it's good to go final...

Edit: Ok I'll give it a final try...

Test .blend

Here is a .blend file for you to test to see if you are happy with it. For it to work correctly please add another folder entitled tmp in BlenderPortable/Data/settings.

I thought it best to try and move the tmp into a more visibile place in the data folder.

Yeah

Yeah I thought the same too.. But making the paths work it's driving me nuts xD

Edit: No, it happens the same as I tried to do what you said, blender freezes at startup and I have to delete .B to reset the user preferences... In yours work?

Should work

If you give the .blend.zip file link that I posted just above your last message, the paths should work fine. It links to the texture and sequence folders in the plugins folder that is created in BlenderPortable/Data/settings. If you put your required files in those specific folders it should work.

Edit:
Works fine here. Make sure you have it set as this before you run the app

BlenderPortable
- Data
-- settings
--- .blender (place the blend file I posted in here)
--- plugins
--- tmp (important for the test to work)

Not working.

For me isn't working... It doesn't freezes now, I corrected that, but now, when I quit it says that I don't have permission to write in the folder or something like that, I don't if it's some option that I have on my computer that it doesn't let to access the folder...

Edit: Ah, I just noticed now, don't know why but blender it's automatically assuming drive C: to save the quit.blend but right now I'm working with the original BlenderPortable on my pen which is H:

Well I try to see this tomorrow, I have to go now... Best Regards

Conclusion

I can get it to work fine with the new blend file I posted but I think it is best left as the version I have in the full install that I have in the original post.

Most users would redefine plugins etc for a set project folder they are working on and the render current frame jpegs are positioned to where the blend file they are working on is saved. When render animation is used a tmp folder will automatically be created in the same folder as the blend file.

If no project has been started/saved then the default blend file I have included keeps any temp render in Data/settings/.blender along with the current default settings blend file we use.

You're right... (Final Opinion)

(I tested the blender file on my school PCs but it didn't work too)

Yeah I agree with you, it's best to leave the path options and other settings on default so that everyone can choose their own preferences... Because probably most BlenderPortable downloaders will be Blender users...

I'll just give some useful links for those who want to customize blender:

Setting paths and preferences:

Themes:
http://www.graphicall.org/themes/
http://blendernewbies.blogspot.com/2009/04/blender-themes-used-in-blende...

Well in my opinion your BlenderPortable it's more then ready to go to final release, everything I threw at it went completely normal... No errors/bugs to declare... Now we just have to wait that John comes here again to see if this goes official...

Good luck, I really appreciate the work that you had to build this Smile

Where's the final release?

Hey, why wasn't made a final release of this?

I've been using this for more than a week now and not a single problem to report...

It's pretty stable, it doesn't stop responding and I didn't encounter any bugs...

I could continue to use this version but it would be nicer to have a official release... lol

I'm expecting the final release to come out...
Best regards...
