Hello all,
I have just recently found this site and its totally awsome. But there just one program missing from it that I use all the time and its a game, called Wolfenstein Enemy-Territory, its probably the only free First Person Shooter (FPS) that I know of. It would be great if someone could make it portable.
Here is the link to the site because, many people probably dont know about it. (just geusing)

Thanks!

Unfortunately most people will not have the luxury of having enough free space to install a full game onto their thumb drive. Enemy Territory is a quite popular game and is definitely not new to me. I enjoy the fact that it is free too!
As for making this a portable app...I don't know much about the coding of it, but most games don't use the registry (i don't think) and you could probably just install it to your thumb drive.
My friend installed HL2 to his and played it at school It was actually getting a decent ~40 frames/second but then when it tried to render fire....yeah ~3 frames a second... but hey, its not like the school was going to buy gaming computers!
I hope this helps!
Mr. O
Let me start by saying that I'm really glad I did a search on this topic before posting!
I am also a fan of this really great freeware game, and have successfully moved my ET game folder between machines and it works fine.
Let's look at the specs that came up when I went to install it to my 512MB Sandisk Cruzer Micro. I copied them prior to bailing on the install.

Okay, that being said it should work, providing the drive you install or move the game to has enough room and the PC meets the hardware specs.
My ET game folder os almost 1GB at this point from accumulated maps, so the bigger the better, especially over the long haul.
I don't know if the USB connection would interfere with how the game runs either. I would assume that it would be okay, since most larger drives are USB 2.0 by default anymore.
I gave my 2GB flash drive to my mom to use, but her PC is being sent out for repairs. I may borrow it back briefly just to see if this will work.
If/When I do I'll post my results.
One thing doesn't make sense to me in those specs: it requires both an OpenGL compliant video card and DirectX 8.1. OpenGL and DirectX are two completely different graphics systems. How can it use both at the same time?

I dunno.
My guess is that it uses either one or the other depending?.
It could need Direct X for certain Windows specific things like audio or networking control.
Also on a side note, seems like anything that uses the Quake engine (in this case Quake3) is portable since nothing is written to the registry and all settings are stored locally. Another good example is Nexuiz wich is a freeware opensource Quake3 based game with a bunch of enhancements like GLSL support.
Its Quake 1 based (or DarkPlaces-Engine - a modified Quake 1 Engine) not Quake 3
I recently picked up a 4GB FD (Sandisk Cruzer Micro 2) and a 60GB external USB HD (Maxtor One-Touch III)
After settling in with both it occurred to me to try running ET from them now that I have the space required.
There was no scientific testing done. I simply copied the folder as it exists on my desktop PC's hard drive.
My first indication that there are considerations was watching the folder copy to the HD and the FD at the same time.
The HD is a 5200RPM and transferred the 1.1GB folder much faster than the FD did.
(I've since found out the the Cruzer 2 isn't the fastest FD out there, so of course your mileage may vary)
Running ET from the flash drive did work for the short time I used it on my favorite server, but I noticed a delay in loading the game, as well as occasional slight delays when accessing files.
This stuff wasn't an issue when I ran ET from the HD.
It's faster accessing times eliminated any delays and the game ran pretty much like it would if it was installed on board.
Main considerations when running this from a FD:
Space
If you DL new maps you'll need some growing room.
(My ET folder was 1.1GB at the time I copied it over.)
Wear
Flash drives have a finite amount of read/write cycles, so running ET means more wear on your FD.
My intention is to use this portably, and that means when my other machines are inaccessible, so it's not a full-time arrangement.
I'm not particularly worried about the wear factor, at least not right now.
My last best-good-news of the year!!! haha!
ET from a flash drive! gaming at work!!!
et takes way too much space, my et folder is over a gig, and all the maps in it are still played daily
i simply burned a cd with the heaviest maps in it, and if bored at school i simply drag em over to the computer and wait lz seconds to get the map needed downloaded
on a flashdrive, i'd doubt about et, on an usb hdd it would be real possible.
but next thing you know, hundreds of ten year old punks will come and start yelling:
"0m6, 3T !5 G4Y, 6!v3 µ5 c0µnt3r-5Tr!k3, c5 !$^t3h sh!t, 4ll 0t|-|3r g4m3s r t3h sµxx0rz!"
okay, so I vastly exxagerated, but be sure, there'd be morons like that coming.
for space preservation, I'd say some older DOS games or such.
good news then *pulls up the thumb drive, darn it's only 1 gig, and it got only 440 mb left* *sobs*
Nice knowing it works portably
