UPDATE Aug 21 This release has been superceded by the Gaim Portable 2.0 Beta 3.1 Pre-Release
I've just posted a pre-release of Gaim Portable 2.0 Beta 3 and need some folks to test it out... especially if you've had problems with Portable GIMP or Portable Gaim in the past. For the unfamiliar, Gaim is a multi-network instant messaging client that works with AOL, MSN, Yahoo, etc. This release has many of the features of the other new apps, plus some new stuff:
Live CD Support - Gaim Portable fully supports running from a CD. Just extract it to your local hard drive, run it at least once and configure it to your liking, and burn it to CD.
In-Place Upgrades - Gaim Portable supports the ability to do what I'm calling an "in-place upgrade". This means that you can extract it right over an existing installation of Gaim Portable without losing any of your existing preferences and it'll Just Work (tm).
Language Selection - You can now specify the language that Gaim Portable will use independent of the operating system you're currently running it in. After running it at least once (and generating your default settings), head to GaimPortable\Data\settings and open up GaimPortableSettings.ini. In there, set GAIMLANG equal to the language you wish to use... de for German, for instance. It's blank by default, which means it will use the operating system default).
Gaim Encryption - Gaim Portable now includes the Gaim-Encryption plugin by default, allowing you to do encrypted messaging right out of the box.
WINE Support? - Currently, Gaim will not function running within a standard WINE install if it does not include the Windows fonts package. I'm not sure if it will if those fonts are included (Anybody that can test?)

UPDATE: It's been updated to Pre-Release 2. Unfortunately, the Gaim Encryption plugin is not portable without updating the Gaim prefs xml (which is a mess since every single node is named 'pref')... and Gaim OTR looks like it's dead (no updates since November and no compatibility with 2.0 Beta 3). So, for now, there is no encryption.
MSN UPDATE: MSN has changed the way its network works and this may crash Gaim. An updated plugin is available. Download a new ligmsn.dll and place it in the GaimPortable\App\gaim\plugins directory to fix the issue. HTTP connections may not work anymore, so be sure it's in standard mode.
Thanks,
John
I have a virgin copy of WINE on a virgin (almost) copy of Puppy.
I'll try ASAP.

Up until now, I could never get the pesky thing to work for me, maybe this is my chance to get it working
recived this error when I move to differnet computer
error(2)changing access mode for file: known_keys cannot save key
I click ok and it seems to still work fine
Any ideas?
It's the encryption plugin causing it. Unfortunately, it stores a full path to the key files. And updating the Gaim prefs xml file isn't really an option as it's a bit of a mess (every single XML node is named 'pref' so I can't update it with the NSIS XML plugin). I've removed it and posted a Pre-Release 2.

Unable to connect thing.
Now I know I'm able to connect on yahoo messenger, windows messenger, trillian etc, so I kmow it's not a fault at this end.
Under account settings:
I take it, that Screen name is your user id i.e. in my case techguyone@yahoo.com
password: is self explanatory
what is Alias: ?
Because I don't get why I'm getting "techguyone disconected: Unable to connect."
nless maybe I'm doing something wrong on the config, especially as seeing that EVERY other IM in the known world works just fine...
It's just techguyone. No @yahoo.com. Only MSN does the @domain.com thing because it's both MSN.com and Hotmail.com.

Still no joy, and I'm buggered if I know why, maybe I can look at the ports in miranda (if you can) and try and mirror those.
I'd feel better if no IM worked, but it's just frustrating that this particular app doesn't work and all the rest do.
I try MSN messenger, it says techguyone@yahoo.com disconnected: Unable to authenticate: Unable to connect. (although MSN messenger from Windows manages to just fine)
It's gotta be something with that PC. The GTK issues that lots of people encounter cause the app not to even be able to start (errors, intl.dll not found, etc), but Gaim is firing up fine on your PC. So, it's gotta be something with the PC or the networking. Sure there's no proxy on your connection? Both miranda and Gaim connect to scs.msg.yahoo.com:5050 by default. You can alter the server or port in both clients.

and it's loaded up and I'm online with yahoo just fine. So the question has to be, how come miranda (using the exact same port & login server as Gaim) works, but Gaim doesn't.
I still don't know what the alias: field in Gaim is used for.
It's not necessary. It's used to show a different name locally when you're in an IM window.
Is your password 8 chars or less? That's an issue with MSN and non-MSN clients. Perhaps for Yahoo as well. Any oddball chars in your password that might get bonkered when sending?

and is a mixture of letters & numbers (nothing funky though)
Just for shits n giggles. Try logging into Yahoo and changing it to an 8 char version. Never know.

Caus yahoo minimum is 6, still no joy though.
you ever try Gaim Portable on another PC/network? I use Gaim every single day on AOL, MSN and Yahoo without issue. And I've used Gaim Portable a bunch of places, too.

Its connected to the main desktop via ICS so, if it's a network thing, it'll prob be the same result.
Is there any mileage in looking up the Gaim support site (if there is one) and persuing it there, becauce I can't get away from the fact that every other IM known to man works on this pc fine, and it's only Gaim that doesn't, which logically has to hint at something within the software of Gaim itself is the problem. (or why would other apps work?)
umm ahem, well I looked at this on the Gaim FAQ and I changed the Pager port to port 80 and I got Yahoo to connect,so that's a bit of a result
Now to try and do the same wirh the MSN messenger
Im about to try the new Beta here.
After using portable apps suite for months and keeping all my apps updated all of the sudden I get the glib error/crash.
After reinstalling, going back, erasing GAIM settings ect, I noticed it runs smoothly until I add an MSN account and try to connect with it.
This first started happening about 3 or 4 days ago.
On another note, after this problem i tried using Miranda only to have ICQ/AIM not being able to connect. Then I went back and tried trillian, same thing with AIM/ICQ.
So for now as long as I dont use MSN on GAIM it works fine. So I'll give this Beta a shot. Kinda frustrating because I dont have MSN IM on this machine at all.
BTW, GIMP has no problems with GTK or any dll errors. GAIM seems to be the only one affected.
I'll post some results of the new beta test soon.

Please re-read the main post at the top of the page. There's a known issue with MSN accounts in Gaim 2.0 due to MSN's recent change of their protocol. You need to update the plugin.

unable to authenticate (yes I'm using standard mode) would be interested to see if anyone can get MSN to work.
tried it with portable and regular gaim (i'm on it now with regular gaim)

Although MSN as it's own application does.
hmmmmm
MSN may be using a secondary connection method from your location that is not supported by any other apps now that they've changed their networking protocol (which is what broke Gaim 2.0 in the first place). Perhaps it does its own fallback when it can't connect to the primary now and that fallback isn't supported on Gaim or Miranda (which is possible since we know the HTTP fallback in Gaim no longer works with their new protocols).

Hmm. I don't know. I can personally connect to MSN just fine with Miranda 0.5. Guess they updated the plugin. It might be good to note that I have the option "use Messenger 7 protocol" turned on the Miranda MSN plugin options.

Thanks for the info about the updated MSN plugin, John. It's been bugging myself and a friend for the last week! However, the only way I can connect to MSN was via the HTTP method on port 80, so I hope thats updated soon too.

Peter
