Has anyone taken over the InfraRecorder project?

The current PA version of Infrarecorder has some serious issues, not from PA, but because it is using an older version on Infrarecorder.
Specifically, on some systems, it hangs forever. This is a known issue with IR 0.46.1.

I know that JTH has listed Infrarecorder on the Development Test page as "Needs Updating", and it has been so for a while.
Also, I haven't seen the last person to develop this app as portable (Travis) on the forums since last fall, so I assume he has gone on to bigger and better things.

Just changing to 0.46.2 will make this functional again.
And Christian Kindahl's roadmap for IR shows that he will be continuing to develop and improve it, so the project will need a PA developer for the foreseeable future.

Has anyone got any interest in picking up this project?

Thanks!

I'll give it a shot

I'll take a look at it to see what is involved. I've used this a bit and would hate for it to fall off.

Nevertheless, 0.46.2 is a worthy upgrade

The issue for some is that 0.46.1 won't work at all.
At least 0.46.2 fixes that: 0.46.2 Release Notes

As for the DVD thing - is that only for direct copies from disk to disk?
Can you use IR 0.46.2 to create an image of the DVD, and then burn the image to a disk? 'Cause that's what I always do, and I've never had an issue.

Anyway, Christian Kindahl has a pretty long view roadmap, so however we proceed, it would be great if someone has the skills and the time to adopt this app for this and future releases.

It's just not a good burner...

...no wonder no one wants to deal with it. It doesn't do multi-session properly on certain discs, or at all. It has serious bugs and quirky interface problems, some actions can't be cancelled...you must kill the program manually. It stays in memory after it's been closed (doesn't really close). There are far better alternatives, such as jetbee free, for example. This burner should be dropped from Portableapps.

Works Fine

It works fine for me. And I've never encountered any of the issues you mentioned (though I don't do multi-session since the feature is useless for my needs).

Thanks, John, for releasing the latest version

I've downloaded it and it works great.

Nighted, I've used Infrarecorder for years. The issues I have seen were with specific revisions, of which the worst was the de facto PA version (because that particular PA developer had left this site). I did obtain portablized Infrarecorder from other sites, but I prefer to use the PA version when possible.
Now that it is up to the latest version 0.50, I'm quite happy with it.

I haven't used Jetbee Free. I did visit the site, and it appears that it is the limited freeware version of the commercial product.
While there was a nice list of features for the commercial product, there was no list of the limitations for the freeware version - although it does say that it is limited.

Mainly, Jetbee is not open source, and currently only open source apps are used on this site.
There are not many Open Source Windows alternatives to Infrarecorder, and I don't think any are better.

Meh...

Well, you guys are lucky. For quick backups it's probably ok. But for a full featured burning application, it just doesn't do what it says.

JetBee can be installed and the directory moved onto a USB drive. The settings and dependent files are stored alongside the executable. It does multi session without any problems and is easy to use. You don't need to manually import previous sessions every time, or manually change settings to create a multi session disc. InfraRecorder just does not do multi session and it's support for RW media is a pain. You'd be best using ImgBurn and carrying along JetBee for multi session, or look around the net for the portable versions of other freewares such as BurnAware Free, which also uses the PortableApps format for those who use the launcher. The only thing I was impressed about with InfraRecorder is that it properly preserves file/folder attributes, which even many shareware burners miss altogether. Sadly, I guess I'm one of the only people left on the planet that has much use for multi session anymore. Blum

Maybe a decent open source burning app just wasn't meant to be.

All I Need

Well, like lots of others, InfraRecorder is all I need. It works fine doing data and music burns and handling the random ISO.

I think poo-pooing it just because it doesn't handle multi-session well isn't a reason to call it a bad app. Multi-session isn't used much anymore as cheap flash drives kinda killed the reason for most folks to use it. I know I dropped it for backups in favor of external flash or hard drives a long time ago. I just threw out my old CDRW and DVDRW discs since they were just taking up space.

We'll be listing freeware here soon, so if one of those other apps is in proper PAF, it'll probably show up here once it's tested.

Well, it appears Nighted has a point

I admit that I don't use multisession much, but I do use CDRWs - but usually to create a master, which means I don't multi it.
I tried a multisession using 0.50 rev 2, and it crashes every time I try to import the session from the disc.

Still, I don't forsee using multisession any time in the near future. I gave up using it long ago, because I've always had issues with it no matter what app I used, and multi-sessions don't play nice across different apps.
The times when I needed to serially add files to a CD were when I was automating backups - and for those, I used Packet-Writing software instead.

I'll report this to the IR peeps - but could it be due to the portablization?

Yes, I also use RW media for

Yes, I also use RW media for testing and building ISOs, and very often.

Nothing to do with the portableapps format, multi session is just FUBAR. Period.

It is just as crippled now as it was 3 or 4 years ago when I first tried InfraRecorder.

Had I not been using RWs, that's money going directly into the garbage. And as far as poo pooing goes John, well, I'm entitled to point out something that I'm told is there but isn't...so "th-th-th-thhhhhhh"! Blum
