Memory friendly browser

hi, does anyone know of a more RAM memory friendly browser than firefox that could be made portable? or perhaps someone even knows of a portable version of some text based browser? I'd just like something a bit more memory friendly at times is all.

Wow!

I just started making that. I had that plan: to make FFP smaller. I was planning on stripping out all the unneccessary files (like help.html) and i brought it down only to about 18 MB. There's a catch though: none of your browser history is saved and the first run webpage shows up every time. I was going to post it in the beta forums but I didn't think it was going to be a hit.

Try Opera@USB: only 15 MB
http://www.opera-usb.com/index.htm

There's also this "Off By One web browser" (thats what they call it), thats only 1.5 MB, but I don't think its legit.

yup. Command line only web

yup. Command line only web browsing. Facebook isn't cool enough to support it though Biggrin And, those aren't my words, but theirs.

correct

You are right, I use linux from time to time. However, I need a portable build, or some other portable browser that runs in low RAM considering FFP is taking 118,000 K as shown on task manager. most likely a low ram browser wouldn't take up tons of usb space, so don't really have to worry about that.
And I don't care about facebook or myspace - I loathe most of those social networking sites (personal reasons)

lynx

will be probably somehow difficult to be used today, people tend to produce only graphics and no texts on the websites and drive all the rest with scripts, this is nothing for the lynx I think. I have not used it for number of years so dont know if there is something new abt it.

One thing I remember was called Nettamer. Complete internet suite running under DOS, from floppy if desired. Included 'semigraphic browser' , mail client , news client, NTP client, and many other things, could dial up itself via modem even and did fine run on my PC with 8mb ram that time. OK , no mouse supported, only keyboard operation.
But FUN FUN!

And if all fails, try browser called ARACHNE, it is fun too.

Firefox and RAM

Firefox just uses available RAM for cache. If you want it to use less, you can turn off some features or you can do a couple simple hacks like the config.trim_on_minimize switch in about:config (a few random sites have info on it) and Firefox will trim RAM use whenever you minimize it. You can also set browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers to 0 to disable short-term cache for the back button (a few sites have info on this, too).

IE-based

It's small because it doesn't actually contain a browser. It's a wrapper on around IE, so it uses the version of IE on whatever computer you're currently on. That means it's limited by each PC separately (it'll work really well on a Win7 machine with IE9 but be clunky on a WinXP machine with IE6 or 7) and vulnerable to any unpatched issues on the local machine's browser.

Also, Slim Browser uses more RAM than Firefox: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/battle-of-the-browsers-in-cpu-and-memory-usage/

Possible alternatives

QTWeb "Light weight browser" Cross Platform and available as a portable for windows. http://www.qtweb.net/download.php
takes about 7MB disk and 35MB RAM on my XP machine
I thought I had another, but can't find it.

light

How about "light"? It's firefox just stripped down. In my experience it has the fastest rendering of both online and local web pages. It's also light on the ram.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/lightfirefox/
Though it supports "portable mode" (see download page), it would be nice if we could see it here on portableapps.com.
