Oddly, it turns out that it doesn't matter. It always redirects to the current one, which is smart from uTorrent's point of view. Hopefully, we'll get permission to bundle it in and make the installs easier on users.

This is my favorite torrent downloader but I have to pass on this one because downloading of torrent is not good on me if I will have to carry it with my portable drive. I have to leave it at home running and downloading

Hi wraithdu, this is a great software, I like very much, but when I start installation, download some data from internet and finish installation, I start from Portable App menu, then the program only show a command prompt window with uTorrent.exe in title bar, but the GUI is don't show.
What is wrong in my instalation?.

the .torrent file is not portable?
I put utorrent portable on my portable disk and it worked fine untill I took the disk to office and ran again.
The message shows that"Error:can't open .torrent file:H\Appz\........"something like that.
Noticing that the volume is different in my office and at home,I guess the .torrent file is not portable.

I have long been a fan of Portableapps.com because it has tons of awesome open source apps in a portable format that makes them easy to use.
uTorrent is owned by corporations with vested interests in both the RIAA AND MPAA. I don't recommend using it for your safety and privacy.
Deluge works just as well, is open source, and would be a MUCH better choice for a Portable App.
It's cross platform and works on Windows, Linux, and Mac...

µTorrent is definitely the best ever P2P application.
but I have doubts about using it as portable.
There are actually few things that make me think that way... but the major concern is this:
- you came to an "alien computer" and use your Portables.
The greatest thing about it - neither the Application nor the user don't touch the alien computer and eventually there should not be traces left whether it's Registry and/or disk ...etc.
Now, I got my µTorrent to my friend's computer
In order to make it work I have to, rather "must do"
a) port forward ... the router settings are changed;
b) create correct and safe rules in his/her 3rd party Firewall (!!!)
Keep in mind please I don't mean by that setting it "allow to run as a server in Windows native Firewall"
Those who are using that silly poor thing are unfortunate enough, but still... that would be wrong
You should create at least 4-5 strong necessary rules for 3rd party Firewall in order to run µTorrent... if you don't - you are risking a lot ... believe me
c) I have to amend the settings in 3rd party Firewall concerning stealth ports
So I have to deeply tamper other user's system in order to run µTorrent.
In my system I will delete forwarded ports after I finished
and I will set back "Stealth all ports", I will not leave "Set ports for P2P use"
I don't think that making µTorrent portable is a good idea at all.

Wouldn't you have to forward ports and change firewall settings for any/all P2P/Bit-Torrent clients?
I personally don't use my instance of µTorrent in the computert-to-computer, portable sense. I use a portable version on my own home computer, for ease of maintenance. So, I have only ever changed the settings on my own computer/home network.
If I ever used it on someone else's computer it would be to download software/media for their computer, at their request or with their permission so I don't see that updating firewall settings and such to be a big deal.
I'm certainly not going to use it at work, or on "unknown" computers, that's probably asking for trouble. The points you're raising are valid but to my mind they are more general Internet safety/security concerns of using particular types of applications, rather than µTorrent specifically.

Any of the portables I used served the purpose - they are self-contained and I don't need to tamper with "other computers. I can use it on my one computer that way as well

... but still this kind of App. anyway doesn't look like good candidate for portables.
Interestingly enough if we are talking about "µTorrent specifically" this time ... it is just an exe to bring or download on the other computer anyway with all following changes we discussed. Just in addition there will be the directory in ...\Documents and Settings\... with some stuff + IPfilters (if you want) that's all

You do not *have* to forward
You do not *have* to forward ports to make uTorrent work. You only have to do this to receive incoming connections. P2P will still work without the open ports, although it is bad P2P etiquette since you are basically a leecher at this point. But it'll work in a pinch.

or there is a "port triggering technique"...
I don't know what is your security setup - you have very strange and unsafe settings if your ports are opened or something and you don't need to set forwarded port in the router
plus without setting rules specifically for the P2P client, so only IT can communicate through particular ports only... that is dangerous
but that is not the main subject here. It doesn't matter whether you would forward/trigger ports or open all ports - you are doing it on a computer that does not belong to you... because you brought your portable P2P client... and the you forgot to set all back leaving that PC insecure

Sorry, you're wrong. uTorrent will work to download without port forwarding/triggering. I've done it at home behind my router where nothing is forwarded and UPnP is disabled. Incoming connections will fail, but uTorrent can still initiate outgoing connections to remote peers.

I said running without forwarding ports will cause incoming connections (meaning UPLOAD connections) to fail. This is like leeching (downloading without uploading/sharing). However this does not prevent uTorrent from making outgoing connections (meaning DOWNLOAD connections). So you are wrong, uTorrent will still download just fine without forwarding any ports. You just won't be able to upload to anyone else.

I'm pretty sure this is the behavior that Shareaza will exhibit too. You'll also suffer a performance hit since you can't make as many successful connections when you're restricting yourself to only outbound traffic.
The original argument is still a general privacy/security/moral issue. To be honest I don't think you can say, nobody do this because it could be harmful. Me going to work when I have a cold could be harmful but I'm not going to take a day off every time I sneeze.
The original point is well taken but I think it should be up to the individual, particularly since there are so many circumstances where you would want to legitimately change a person's PC configuration in order to download files.
Firewall
If it's any help, Synkron Portable can be configured to add then remove itself from the Windows Firewall, leaving the PC clean.
BUG: Saving Settings
I'm not sure where bug reports for the new freeware versions go, as they don't have forum threads like the OSS projects, but I found one (confirmed on 2 different machines) with uTorrent Portable.
If uTorrent portable is running when you request a system reboot, it fails to save it's settings properly. The next time it starts it will have forgotten everything it has downloaded (from RSS) and start downloading it again. It will also forget any program setting changes you have made.
If you manually right click on the taskbar icon and then exit, it saves settings properly, it appears to be only the system shutdown that is preventing the settings from being saved. Note that the system is not forcibly shutting it down (no stopped responding dialog), it appears to shutdown gracefully.

Actually, this is a problem with all portable apps (and many regular apps). Shutting down the system is like forcibly terminating a process with task manager, unless it is specifically programmed to handle the system shutdown properly (99% are not). Not to mention, none of the launchers can handle this situation right now either. This is not a bug. Just don't do it.

The proper way is that the application (or launcher) processes the WM_ENDSESSION window message, which is sent by the OS when the system shuts down, and performs cleanup and exits gracefully.
