Is there any way to hide aspects of so-called "portable" applications such as Effective File Search for windows?
I see the uninstall programs as well as the main installer, but I only want the main executable to be visible.
What I'm asking for is a way to write a .ini file that works regardless of what happens in the menu itself such as hide/unhide.
I hope this is possible.
Hide is permanent. "Show hidden" is only for use when you need to retrieve something you accidentally hid. If you're currently using hide to hide you less-used apps, just pin your favorites to the top of the menu (using the 2.0 Beta 3 release).
Side note: Stuff like uninstall.exe is safe to delete.

If there could be "properties" at the bottom, I think there would be less of a problem as often I have no idea what uninstaller refers to what program in which folder.
Something must be done.
Just hover and it shows you the full path.

Hi there.
Maybe I don't understand or have something set wrong, but I see nothing when the mouse pointer is "hovering over an entry in the list.
Is this what people are asking about "tooltips" for?
Thanks
P.S. What is "start automatically" for? I hope it's not a windows setting since I might execute virus' this way
There are tooltips on all icons. When it's in PortableApps.com Format it shows:
Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition 3.5.4
Mozilla and PortableApps.com
X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable
When it's not, it shows:
X:\PortableApps\Acme

means that you can have apps start when the platform starts. It has nothing to do with windows so my guess is that it would be hard for viruses to exploit it (Viruses especially designed to autostart with our Platform? - we are not THAT widely known yet :)).

I get nothing sorry, maybe my platform is wrong or someone changed something but I see no tooltips at all for anything and its' driving me mad I don't know what's what sometimes.
Oh and about Autostart, does this mean I can commence Firefox minimized?
menu version do you have?
What OS?

Uninstallers can simply be deleted outright. You don't need them. If you're paranoid, move the uninstaller .exe to your documents folder. If the program continues to work fine, it's 100% safe to delete the uninstaller.
Otherwise, no. The menu will index every .exe file it finds and show all but those flagged as hidden in its own .ini file or wherever it stores it.
duh! I must be completely stupid not to have thought of that.
I'll delete the uninstallers since if it's not installed then why do I need a complicated solution to fix what is not a problem (I sill would like more published ini settings however like hide splash).
Anyway is it the intention to not have an arrow or something to indicate that you can have your own picture on the menu?
I notice with things like trillian they help you set up your profile and I know it's not that kind of application but at least it has a default picture, kind of makes it seem unprofessional in a way to not have anything there by default.
I don't reckon it's too hard to pull it out from the "other" directory?
I'd have to agree. It can't be too hard to make a little arrow and some text saying
You can put your picture here if you click!
.Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.
it already shows the square and you see a little hand-pointer instead of the mouse arrow.
I think thats enough.

but how are you supposed to know you can have a theme if there's no wizard?
I like the wizard idea. Offer to run it when first installing the theme... when you first start the Platform, how about opening a "Setup wizard" that lets you name the device (or leave it PortableApps.com), pick a personal picture (or leave it blank), and pick a color (or load a theme, or leave it red). And then replace the theme selector under Options with a shortcut to this setup wizard.
Eh?
Something. I like wizards when they are well written.
And while we're at it, can Effective Search be properly portablized since it's freeware?
The search function on vista is really convoluted and difficult to use and I think this place needs something like that to make it more relevant to the real world.
Thank you for replying
Looking at their web site, the screenshots of Effective File Search are almost identical to the file search functions built into FreeCommander.
Download the portable version of FreeCommander and check it out.
