Application: ImgBurn
Category: Utilities
Description: ImgBurn is a lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application that everyone should have in their toolkit! It has several 'Modes', each one for performing a different task:
- Read - Read a disc to an image file.
- Build - Create an image file from files on your computer or network - or you can write the files directly to a disc.
- Write - Write an image file to a disc.
- Verify - Check a disc is 100% readable. Optionally, you can also have ImgBurn compare it against a given image file to ensure the actual data is correct.
- Discovery - Put your drive / media to the test! Used in combination with DVDInfoPro, you can check the quality of the burns your drive is producing.
Online Installer: ImgBurn Portable is an online installer that will download additional files during setup.

EDIT: Just tried installing and got this error -
PortableApps.com Advocate
Any change you have spaces in the path and it's using an installer version pre 1.0 (which fixed it)?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Using default path:
PortableApps.com Advocate
Check to see if your window temp directory has any spaces in it. The live installer downloads the original install file to the temp directory and then extracts it from there. The PortableApps.comInstaller version I used was version 1.0.
Don't think it does but can't say for sure. Are you referring to to C:\Windows\Temp? If so no spaces. I haven't had any issues with the temp folder when using other online intallers.
PortableApps.com Advocate
I'm referring to the temp folder in your windows user profile. Run -> %temp%. Which other online installers are you using?
PicPick Portable, Glary Utilities Portable, Google Chrome Portable, foobar 2000 Portable, and Skype Portable.
PortableApps.com Advocate
I can't think of any other reason why it wouldn't work. I did replace the default Installer's 7za.exe with the 7z.exe (renamed to 7za.exe) to get the SetupImgBurn_2.5.0.0.exe extraction to work correctly.
Here are my possible explanations of why it wouldn't work:
I'll release development test 2 with the fixed ImgBurnPreview icon and I'll make sure that I use installer 1.0.
I think it may be spaces in the path. My Temp path is C:\Documents and Settings\FirstName LastName\Local Settings\Temp. Looking forward to the DT2 fix.

Can you reinstall one of the other online installers that you listed above? If it is successful, could you let me know which online installer you used? I'll look at the said installer to see if it has the solution I need for the temp dir problem.
Successfully installed Glary Utilties and PicPick Portable. Also posted the install details to Paste Bin. It's only there for the day so you'll need to save it if you want it for any longer. Also you'll note that the account name for this install attempt has no spaces.
Hope that helps

Try installing this one:
https://portableapps.com/temp/ImgBurnPortable_2.5.0.0_Dev_Test_1_online....
It's the same build but with the 1.0 PA.c Installer with some more debug output. Let me know what it shows. PasteBin is fine again. Thanks!
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
John, your compiled version has the original 7za.exe compiled in it which cannot extract the SetupImgBurn_2.5.0.0.exe correctly. See this post.
It's using 7za.exe, 7-Zip Standalone Console, 4.65. It's the same one you download from 7-Zip right now as their zip file using this link, labeled as "7-Zip Command Line Version" on their download page. It's just been UPX compressed. I downloaded and UPXed the one from 7-Zip's site right now and compared it to the one in the the PA.c Installer and the MD5 matches. The only thing I can think of is your antivirus is misbehaving and silently deleting the UPX compressed variant.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I used the 7z.exe that is packaged with 7-zip 4.65. For some reason the 7z.exe is able to extract the setup file while the 7za.exe cannot.
7za.exe works just fine on it with my Vista box. Is there anything rights-wise set on the directory you are installing to? Also, did you run that special debug installer I posted and copy and paste out the output log?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
with winamp portable.
That's the reason I made it depended on 7-ZipPortable, I'm thinking just to include 7z.exe & 7z.dll in the launcher soon !
I am using Windows XP sp3

Once again, could SOMEONE with this issue run the debug installer I keep asking for?
I can't reproduce this issue at all, so something is different on the user's local PC and I'd like to figure out what.

Ok, I was able to reproduce the error on Windows XP SP3. ImgBurn failed to extract the files during install. On this same box, Skype Portable installed just fine with the current release and with one compiled with the 1.0 launcher.
I also swapped in the 7z.exe and 7z.dll for the console version of 7-Zip and it *DID* work properly with the exact same thing that 7za.exe failed with. Namely, extracting ImgBurn.exe and ImgBurnPreview.exe from SetupImgBurn_2.5.0.0.exe. This same command succeeds on my copy of Windows Vista when used with 7za.exe.
I ran the installer on a clean copy of Windows 2000 and Windows 7. On both, the same error occurs and it can't extract using 7za.exe. So, it would seem that 7za.exe is perhaps looking to an installed copy of 7-zip for something. Or something else is afoot.
Either way, it would seem that 7za cannot extract all the same files that 7-Zip itself (either in GUI mode or via console) can. At least not consistently.
So, I'll work on building 7z.exe and dll into PA.c Installer 1.0.1 to fix this issue. Hopefully it'll be happy UPX compressed.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Ok, I've compiled a quick run of the PA.c Installer using 7z.exe/dll instead of 7za.exe and it DOES seem to fix the issue. Please, everybody try this:
https://portableapps.com/temp/ImgBurnPortable_Test_online.paf.exe
That should fix the issue and, if so, I'll build it into PA.c Installer 1.0.1 which should be out in a couple days since we have some language fixes to push in anyway.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Yeah, it works now.

Thanks John for fixing that so quickly. I'm going to wait for the release of PA.c Installer 1.0.1 until I release DT2.
for me too.

Regshot resultsfor John's second debug installer:
PortableApps.com Advocate
Thanks for posting the regshot results. It's hard to keep track what's being edited and changed when the app had already been installed an ran on the current system.
One thing I did notice was that some of the registry settings were set in the ImgBurn.ini file in the App/DefaultData directory. Now, I don't know if those options have any affect when using the /PORTABLE switch, but I'll uncheck them for the DT2 release.
Let me know if you come across any other options that affect the registry.
I'm running this at home (typical enough PortableApps environment, but on an external hard drive that only changes systems when I reformat/reinstall) and so far it installed (plus downloaded ImgBurn 2.5.0.0) fine. It's burned one from image and it's about to burn a data DVD-ROM from files. Seems OK but I can't speak to the portability/registry cleanliness as that isn't a goal in this environment (just straight portability from one Windows install to the next).
Thanks again! And I will post any issues that arise that seem to point to the launcher (as opposed to the app itself, which wouldn't be your fault).
Thanks for trying it out NathanJ79
One month later it's still running good. No issues whatsoever.
Again I can't speak to the technical portability, but, it did survive a reformat/reinstall of Windows 7, so it's portable enough for me.
Is there a status for this portable app? Is ImgBurn still in beta? When will it be added to the main page of portable applications (under Utilities)? I just happened to do a search on the site for ImgBurn and found this page... I am probably missing something. Is there a link to other apps that are not listed in the main app listing?
Chris
The app is still in Beta because I feel that it hasn't been tested (and reported) enough. I don't know if it's changing registry keys or if there are any other errors.
There is a listing of test release software located on the Test Release page.
ImgBurn 2.5.1.0 is out.
"The question I would like to know, is the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything. All we know about it is that the Answer is Forty-two, which is a little aggravating."
Came here to say this, so here's a bump. It's been over 3 months, is ImgBurn Portable still being worked on? Can I install 2.5.10, copy the files to the portable (sub)folder, uninstall the installed one, and do that?
Updated to the latest release by using this installer and following these instructions:

Copy files to App/Imgburn
Hello everyone,
due to the long wait I’ve taken the liberty of building ImgBurnPortable_2.5.2.0_Development_Test_1_online.paf.exe (MD5: 742dd9dc92688d3190bb2ab8ed939cac) and promptly stumbled over a localization isse:
Unfortunately, LIGHTNING UK! decided to offer all language files as separate downloads only, not included in the main setup package. I tried for something like [DownloadFiles1], [DownloadFiles2] … but the PA.c installer won’t allow that. And we’d run into a »more than 10« situation anyway.
John, could we please have more than one download?
I also propose to change the installer syntax from »Something#« to »Something_#« — this would allow for easy parsing and more than 10 instances of each INI section/variable!
The version above runs fine with English (and German) and has only the bare minimum ImgBurn.ini entries for a safe portable execution. Requires a clean install due to different folder locations and settings.
Still I’d like to add (and be able to handle) full international language support by having the installer downloading the current language files, respectively. I didn’t want to replicate PA.c’s built-in downloading and extraction logic, so I strongly hope we’ll get a means for downloading more than one file (and also more than 10, please).
N.B.: This is not meant as a rip-off of Voltorn43’s fine work but as a (temporary) fill-in because I assume he is just too busy right now. I’ll be happy to share and hand everything back!
… and here is ImgBurnPortable_2.5.2.0_Development_Test_2_online.paf.exe (MD5: 49b57a383ed42273b4463f15bda7b9ee) which includes 36 language files (current as of 2010-09-28) to test the language switching logic. (Not all are up-to-date with the main program version.)
Hi,
Will the new version 2.5.3 be supported? Like the program, would be nice to see it soon as a official portable app.
Since nobody kept ImgBurn up-to-date, I did it again. Maybe a moderator wants to update the first post to include the latest versions.
Here is ImgBurnPortable_2.5.4.0_Development_Test_1_online.paf.exe (MD5: 372d281a9568d5198b5ac89971769226). Enjoy.

Thanks Moonbase
You’re welcome. It was actually you asking for it that prompted me to do v2.5.4 (after leaving out 2.5.3) … Let me know if it works out okay for you.
Hi,
Installed the app without having any issues, program runs and behaves as it should as of what I saw.
Merry xmas.
You should create your own thread for it.

Wasn’t sure about that, especially since I don’t want to rip something off the original developer. So I assumed it might just be clever to keep it all together, somehow.
Then again, the top post is never current. Okay, I guess I’ll do that with the next version, if Voltron43 doesn’t turn up again.
Sorry everybody for not updating the app. My trial version of Win 7 ran out and I didn't want to switch back to XP so I went completely to Linux.
Feel free to change the code as much as you want!
Hi,
no big changes but 2.5.5 is out.
Any chance that ImgBurn will become an offical application soon? Seems to be in test for quite a while.
Voltron43: Thanks for letting us know. I’ll try to update it as often as my time allows.
walterCR: Thanks for the hint—much appreciated. With all the stuff going on behind-the-scenes here, I sometimes lose track. I’ll try to come up with an update in the next few days.
All: As has been suggested by the dev team, I’ll start a new thread beginning with the next update. This is mainly so I can edit the first post and let everyone know about the current status at a glance.
Thanks to Voltron43 for bringing up ImgBurn Portable in the first place, and all others for their feedback!
Moonbase, would you mind posting the link to the new thread once it's up? I'll add the link to the header of the post to redirect everyone to the new thread.
That’s a great idea, we’ll do!
I've been creating a brand new PA.c flash drive and decided to update ImgBurnPortable to 2.5.5.0 since I had access to a Windows machine.
Please let me know if there are any issues.
The App\ImgBurn\Languages folder (and files) seems to be missing, so only english is available. Apart from this it seems to be working just fine, thanks for updating.
The source package does not include languages from what I can see. There are links on their website to download language packs, if needed.
Some other PortableApps.com package download pages include links to download/install different languages (or plugins, or whatever). Maybe the new maintainer can pick that up?
neutron1132 (at) usa (dot) com
It was in the previous versions, anyway - 2.5.4.0 and earlier, so I just assumed it was forgotten.
I'm looking into the possibility of supporting multiple languages.
This is what I'm currently thinking of doing, but have not researched the possibility
-PA.c installer is multilingual
-Include all language files in the App\ImgBurn\Languages directory
-PA.c installer writes the language setting to a default ImgBurn.ini file that is then copied to the Data\settings folder.
Does anybody know off the top of their head that this is possible?
I'm up for other suggestions.
- I just tested doing a simple ECHO into the file, works fine here.
echo GENERAL_Language=1030 >> ImgBurn.ini
You'll need the systemlang number as a variable, and the path to the ini, and of course this gives a momentary ugly black console window popping up - but it's OTOH the most simple way to do it, I guess.
I've been looking at the PA.c Format and I think the first option I'm going to implement is the option of installing the language packages.
The PA.c install file and ImgBurn both are multilingual. One problem is that ImgBurn defaults to english after a fresh install and must be changed manually.
Seems you’re taking it over again, Voltron43, right?
Since we don’t have a multiple download feature, in PA, I had to download all the current language files from ImgBurn’s site manually, unpack them and put them into the appropriate folder.
For 2.5.4.0, I used the following launcher.ini—feel free to use whatever you need from it!
For safety’s sake, I also put an empty directory structure into App\DefaultData\ImgBurn:
Additionally, App\DefaultData\ImgBurn has a default ImgBurn.ini file with this necessary minimal content:
Feel free to use whatever you need, or let me know if you want the complete 2.5.4.0 source zipped and emailed.
Thanks for info. Your launcher.ini file is a huge help.
Can I ask, what are you trying to accomplish with the [FileWrite1] and [FileMove1] sections?
[FilesMove]: As per PA specs, move the ImgBurn.ini file into the »Data« folder, because it contains user-specific data. So it should be able to be backed up separately, and be »safe« in case an upgrade occurs. (Users want their settings back, and new keys are added automatically by ImgBurn.)
[FileWrite1]: Update drive letters to the correct (maybe new) drive letter if some paths are changed. (ImgBurn doesn’t always keep the relative paths; users can also mess these up by going »select folder«.)
[Language]: Upon seeing it, I think maybe I mixed up
with
but I’m not sure without looking it up again. Though I assume it should be correct (I would have checked it the first time through)
Still you might want to look this up in the docs, I might mistakenly have put them the wrong way round.
In installer.ini, a section should be added that specifies the languages actually available. As far as I had investigated for v2.5.2.0, it should be okay to inlucde the (current) language files. The program itself should be downloaded.
You can do this like (example only):
for whatever languages you deliver with it. ENGLISH=true is a requirement, though.
Have fun and let me know if you need anything more!
2.5.5.0 Development Test 3 released
Been using this for a while, on at least 3 diff machines (most using win7 x64) - still works a treat, thanks again!
Can someone tell me what the point of this is? ImgBurn is already portable, just create an imgburn.ini with PortableMode=1 in the application directory.
What does this paf app do that's better?
Read This.

So other than portableapps platform integration, nothing?
Well, considering that if it's just a ZIP, it's useless to us in terms of letting users easily install, organize, quickly backup app data and automatically upgrade their apps... and it'll never be official and be listed in the Portable App Directory on site or in the platform's app store... that's quite a bit.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Is that real? An online installer? Why?
If so, it seems an unecessary limitation.
Of course, I'm on record opposing online installers on principle.
I want to install *portable* apps on boxes without internet access.
I haven't tested this with ImgBurn, but it works (for me) with other PortableApps programs that use online installers.
If you download the 'regular' install file and put in in the same folder/directory as the PortableApps installer, the PA installer *should* use that file instead of using the internet to download the install file.
ie: if ImgBurnPortable_2.5.6.0_Dev_Test_1_online.paf.exe in in the same folder as SetupImgBurn_2.5.6.0.exe it should (hopefully) do a offline install of ImgBurnPortable.
disclaimer: I'm pretty sure the 'regular' install file has to be the exact version the PA installer is looking for. eg: putting SetupImgBurn_2.5.5.0.exe in with ImgBurnPortable_2.5.6.0_Dev_Test_1_online.paf.exe would mean the PA installer would do a online install (by downloading and using that).
I hope that helps (and works
good luck
You are correct, and to add to what you've said, the regular install file must be the correct file, not the wrong file with the right name, as it checks the MD5sum of the file before using it.
Also you can easily check what the URL to download the correct file is when you are downloading the PortableApps Installer by entering the File Properties (Right—click > Properties), switching to the "Version" Tab, clicking the "
PortableApps.comDownloadURL
" list—item, and reading what appears next to it (you can also Copy it and Paste it into a browser or download manager to get the file).~3D1T0R

Updated to ImgBurn 2.5.6.0.
Not much testing has been done on this release. Please post if you find any bugs.
No problems found (not extensively tested, but basic functions works). Win7 x64.
The danish lang files needs updating, working on this.
I just burned a DVD from an ISO on Windows 7. It is working fine. However, the installer is creating two entries in the PortableApps menu.
Thanks,
Greg Finzer
I just tested ImgBurn 2.5.7.0 Dev Test 1 with the fresh PA.c install and I'm getting the correct entries. There are two different applications packaged with ImgBurn Portable: ImgBurn Portable and ImgBurnPreview Portable.
I've updated the languages to their latest versions.
Thank you for under taking this project to help spread this useful program.
Hi,
Version 2.5.7 was released, will the PAF updated?
Thanks
I surely will.

Many thanks!
Thanks. Is there any news on when this could become an official portable app?
