  • Disabled DX plugins (not portable) & DX plugin scans (clean install only).
  • Removed check for updates on startup (clean install only).

  • REAPER license updated.

3.31 Dev Test 2 (2010-02-25):

  • Desktop folder is now called "REAPER Portable Projects" (to minimize the risk of conflicts). If you're upgrading, the folder in the settings directory (default &/or custom) will be renamed automatically but if you have something *really* valuable in there you'd be wise to back it up first :-)
  • Information dialogs added if user enables 'admin only' features (firewall/file associations) on a limited account.

  • Updated SWS Extension to DT4. It's now a standard PA.c online installer.

3.15 Dev Test 1 (2009-12-18):

  • REAPER updated to 3.15.
  • As the PA.c installer can now extract the REAPER setup file correctly, REAPER Portable is now a standard online installer. As only certain items in 'App\REAPER' are preserved, make a backup!
  • $USERTYPE bug fixed (broken since 3.x DT9).
  • REAPER's file associations are now *not* added by default but you can configure this with "REAPERPortable.ini". There are now two REG files in the settings directory. (Requires admin rights).
  • 'Help/HTML lists (auto-generated)' were left in $TEMP. They're now backed up/removed.
  • Removed support for REAPER 2.x. Who still uses that thing? :-)
  • Data directory upgrade removed from the installer.
  • Plugins added/updated.

    • LAME updated to DT4. Version number display corrected. No files/functionality changed.
    • SWS Extension updated to DT3. Downloaded file is no longer saved after install. No files/functionality changed.
    • FX Chains updated to DT4. Installer's destination directory has changed. No files/functionality changed.
    • REAPER User Guide plugin added. This installs the PDF into 'App\REAPER' & you can open it from 'Help/Documentation'.
  • Help file updated.
  • Note: As there as so many changes, I'm recommending a clean install rather than a load of complex upgrade code. Just rename your current "X:\PortableApps\REAPERPortable" directory, install 3.15, run it, exit, then copy any files you need back in.

3.14159 Dev Test 1 (2009-12-08):

  • REAPER updated to 3.14159.

3.1415 Dev Test 1 (2009-11-28):

3.141 Dev Test 1 (2009-11-26):

  • Completely reworked installer. Online/offline, copy local files (default or custom location) etc. See help file.
  • As the installer can download the setup file, these packages are now version-specific.
  • Help file updated.

3.x Dev Test 9 (2009-11-13):

  • Drive letter wasn't being updated in reg file (bug introduced in DT8). Fixed.
  • Minor PA.c Format stuff corrected.
  • Help file updated.

3.x Dev Test 8 (2009-10-29):

  • All registry paths written to file on first run. Registry entries now compatible with install to any directory.

  • Lots of other code tidied up.
  • Help file updated.

3.x Dev Test 5 (2009-09-22):

  • Tweaked firewall code. No user interaction required now apart from setting the INI.
  • Help file updated.
  • A few minor code tweaks.

3.x Dev Test 4 (2009-09-01):

  • 256 x 256 icon removed from "appicon.ico".
  • Help file updated.
  • A few minor code tweaks.

3.x Dev Test 3 (2009-08-27):

  • "My Documents\REAPER Media" is now backed up & restored.
  • Help file updated.

3.x Dev Test 2 (2009-08-16):

  • Optional launcher features added...

    • Copy current projects to desktop*. Requires a clean install.
    • Add/remove to/from Windows Firewall (admin only).

    * I debated the location on the drive of the "REAPER Projects" folder. In this release it's in "REAPERPortable\Data" but maybe it should just be in the root of the drive, if only for the sake of access & visibility. Your opinions are welcome.

  • Replaced REAPER splash with PortableApps.com DT splash. Requires a clean install.
  • Help file updated.
  • A few minor code tweaks.

3.x Dev Test 1 (2009-08-04): Initial release

Features...

  • Fully PortableApps.com Format compatible.
  • Automatic drive, path, desktop & language switching.
  • Copy current projects to desktop (optional).
  • Add/remove to/from Windows Firewall (optional). Requires admin rights.
  • See help file for full information.

Notes:
REAPER is not free but will run unrestricted & with no time limit on the evaluation license.

Wavosaur Portable is a great external audio editor for REAPER Portable.

Tested with:
XP Home SP3 (Guest/Admin)

Just a note

Not sure how/if you want to work this into your post, but REAPER is the program that is going to be used for developing songs for the Rock Band Network. So if you're an artist and/or with a band, and you have copyright to songs, you can use REAPER, plus a plugin that lets you edit the "note highway" for all 12 tracks (Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert for Guitar, Bass, and Drums) and the vocal pitch/tone chart with lyrics. And the people get 30% of the revenue, which could mean some decent money if a lot of people buy it.

Not sure if that plugin will be freely available, or if you'll have to pay for it. Probably the latter.

I read this earlier on IGN, which I can't access from here. I can get the link in the morning.

I've heard about this but

I've heard about this but haven't really investigated. It looks interesting. I just had a quick look at RBN and it seems like it's still in the early stages. Any more info you can provide would be great.

...as in closed beta

It's in the early stages as in a closed beta. :-(

I guess it's not at IGN; a quick Google search didn't turn up the article I wanted.

This article at Wired is basically the same thing but with a lot more info. And they link to the REAPER plugin you need. The other article did not. Same beautiful screenshot shows a multi-channel OGG, the RB note highway in 2D, and the same in 3D. Sounds real interesting.

Oh, and a second program, called Magma, is required to actually complete the project. It's like the authoring step in making a DVD. You can set everything up, but it's still got to be packaged in the format the Rock Band program can read. Magma handles that, I guess, and that's what seems to be in closed beta.

Too bad I don't know how to do any of this stuff, because this is like, the next big thing after CDs and MP3s. It doesn't get any smaller/simpler than digital music; for listening, that is the end of the line. The next step is to do more with the music, in this case sing and play along with it. The next format for music will not be any smaller/clearer, but rather more interactive. Who knows what form that will take; before 2006-2007 I never would have imagined this stuff.

Thanks for that link, it was an interesting read. I'll definitely keep an eye on it.

It was mentioned briefly on the REAPER forum a few weeks ago and there are a couple of interesting links there too.

Having said all that, I have never played the game...

Game vs. Program

Well, "the game" is pretty lame. I mean, it ain't bad, but if I want to play a game, I'll be playing a game... like Oblivion (see avatar), or Shadow Complex (new Arcade game, new Super Metroid clone they have). People think of Rock Band as a "game", but it's really more of a "program". Sure, it has game elements (score, failing=dying; passing=winning) but it's really just a platform to play along with music. It's hard to think of it as "not a game" because it's only on game platforms (not the PC at all) but it really does bend the rules. A karaoke machine isn't a game, because you can't fail, but you can turn off the ability to fail and the crowd noises, which makes the game react much less to ineptitude - just the track flashing red if you're doing badly. (Though you can even turn the track off and use it like a video jukebox, that's called performance mode, a challenge to play sight unseen, but it's best left with just singing.)

Walmart and Amazon have Rock Band 2 for $99 for all platforms. That's one guitar and one drum set, both wireless, batteries for both, a wired microphone, the program disc, drumsticks, instructions, and a code to download 20 "bonus" tracks. Then you rent the first one and pay $5 online to export like, 53 of the tracks. Four or five online are free, including "Still Alive" from Portal, an iCarly (Nickelodeon's answer to Hannah Montana) song, and a few others.

It isn't my favorite thing to do on the Xbox - it's mainly my wife, her brother, and his friends' thing, but it's cool to tinker with. And now people can make their own tracks, and get paid? That's going to eclipse MySpace Music, Last.fm, MP3.com (in its heyday), Pandora, and just about any music service you can think of not called "iTunes". But who knows, in five years' time, maybe you can get "just about anything" between the Rock Band Music Store (about 800 songs there now) and the Rock Band Network. Could happen.

And to wrap all this up with a point, you're working on a portable version of this program, and that's great, because independent bands don't stay in one place. I've seen the multi-channel OGGs that Rock Band uses. They're 25-60MB apiece. Audacity can open them; I guess REAPER can too. Point is, I don't think Walmart sells less than a 2GB drive now. A 4-16GB drive can have a ton of tracks, a few audio editors... an independent band could really take their production on the road more so than ever before. And on top of that get their songs into the Rock Band network? So yeah, keep up the good work.

Having install issues

Installed the non-expiring, non-crippled evaluation version to C:\REAPER. Run the portable launcher, both from the PA window, and "manually", and it looks like it runs (although it doesn't look like it copied anything), but the folders are empty.

Installed version appears to run.

Edit:
Just re-read the install notes. I first ran the installer without a local version installed. It didn't work. Smile Then, I downloaded/installed, and when I ran the portable app, it didn't prompt me to copy.

Edit2:
Ah.... installed to the default location and was prompted to copy. Looks like this one is working. May want to have NSIS check for contents in the default directory, and if not, either get it from the registry, or have the user navigate to it. Smile

Thanks for the report. I'll

Thanks for the report. I'll look into it. Glad you got there in the end Smile

EDIT:
Just been looking at this and I can't get the install path from the registry Sad Here's the registry entry -

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\REAPER]
@="C:\\Program Files\\REAPER"

So what do I put in "CopyFromRegKey"? It won't work without it. The installer compiles and installs but complains it can't find the files (I commented out "CopyFromDirectory=%PROGRAMFILES%\REAPER" for testing purposes).

CopyFromRegPath=HKLM\SOFTWARE\REAPER
CopyFromRegKey=

Is it the same bug as this?

Ooof...

Brushing a couple years' worth of accumulated dust off my NSIS scripting, but can you just use the @ as the key?

Alternatively, you could just assume the program files location for the app, and do a quick check of that location for reaper.exe. If it is there, continue. (Fancy would also be checking MD5...) Wink If not, open up a dialog and instruct the user to navigate to the Reaper directory and use that as your write-to location.

Regardless, the vast majority of users won't be as 'creative' about their installs. Smile

I have REAPER installed

I have REAPER installed locally, and when I went to install REAPER Portable, it downloaded the installer BEFORE asking if I just wanted to copy my local installation. I think it should ask that before you download, and if you say yes skip the download. But I guess that's an issue with the installer, not the app, so I don't know if there's anything you can do about it.

Also, the REAPER installer gets left behind in the /Data folder... again, probably nothing you can do about it, just mentioning.

Download

Yeah, the PA.c Installer is either download or copy, but not both (as far as I can tell) and I can't make it ask before it downloads. You can skip it by hitting the cancel button but you have to be quick Smile I presume you were given the choice not to install though, so no harm done.

Leaving the REAPER installer behind is a feature! You can reinstall REAPER Portable offline or install/upgrade another machine without internet access. If you're sure you won't need it again, just delete it. I should've added some install notes above really.

When the next version of the PA.c Installer is released, hopefully it'll be able to extract the downloaded EXE instead of having to install then uninstall it but, to be honest, I'm finding having all the choices quite useful here (even if they go a bit 'beyond the brief') so I might leave them in.

I hope everything else is working OK for you, it can do a few unusual things Smile

I can't install the LAME

I can't install the LAME plugin, it keeps telling me the downloaded copy of LAME is no good and quits. The base app works great though. Good job.

Hmm... version is the same but the file seems to have changed. Let me check it.

EDIT: There you go, give that one a try.

My external HD is currently

My external HD is currently tied up as I'm watching videos on my Wii, but I'll try it out once this episode of House MD is over

Edit: I just tried running it to a random directory on C: and it finished successfully, so you fixed the error I was running into.

For some reason, I can't load

For some reason, I can't load a custom color map in MIDI roll view editor (File>Load color map from file...). No errors, it just doesn't change the colors. Seeing as I use REAPER for Rock Band customs, the color map is really useful.

Tried These

I don't use this feature myself but I just downloaded the file in this post and they seemed to load and change the colours OK. You could give them a try as a test.

Nevermind, I just tested it

Nevermind, I just tested it out some more, and it seems to be a problem on my end. Some tracks work with a custom color map and others don't, even different tracks within the same file... I'll have to figure it out.

IMO this app need a lot more

IMO this app need a lot more work. I thought the point of downloading the Reaper installer file was so you could extract it to the ../App directory for the user. That's not happening and I was prompted to install Reaper to the local hard drive (on C:\). Not good. If you can't extract the files from the installer with 7-zip to the correct location, you need to extract it on your dev machine and pre-package the whole thing for the user.

Latest Version

You must have an older version, download 3.15 DT1, it does what you expect. I can't repackage it because it's not open source. Or free, for that matter.

Anyway, the 'install' version also optionally did an immediate full uninstall. Can't please everybody...

Nice work

Thank you for the continued work on this project. Very nice.

One request if I may?

When the plugin installers you listed install, they leave the docs in the plugin folder. Is there a way to have the docs of the plugins installed into REAPER\Docs? Also I had to rename the manuals file name to something more legible and to get them to show up in the Help\Documentation\ menu like they are below.

Fish Fillet Manual.pdf
Reaper Plus! The Power of SWS Extensions (v 1.7.1).pdf
Reaper Quick Start Manual.pdf
Reaper User Guide (367c).pdf

Thanks again for making the plugin installers.

Thanks

Thanks, glad you're liking the plugins.

I did think about moving the manuals as well but there were a couple of things that stopped me. First, the menu doesn't recognize folders so it'll get overcrowded very quickly and second, if the manual is meant to be accessible from the plugin's GUI, moving it will break that feature. They could be copied I suppose but then there is the disk space issue as some of them can be large. Also, they should show up without having to be renamed or am I missing your point?

Anyway, I'll keep them as they are if you don't mind and leave the user free to customize to their liking (as you've done). Thanks for the feedback though (sorry not to be more accommodating!)

Good Point.

I didn't think about some may access the plugin manuals from the plugin feature screen. Best to leave them there. Yeah, I copied them so they show up in the help/Documentation menu after renaming them. The file names ran together. I guess for OSX and linux users, thats what I meant by renaming them to be more legible. I think one was reaperusrermanualv367c or something. Didn't look to user friendly in the menu like that.

As I think of it, if the program is updated it might remove all my manuals, now that I put them in the Docs folder, huh?

Thanks again for the hard work, my students and I greatly appreciate it.

docs folder

Everything in the docs folder is preserved on upgrade (except the default Quick Start Guide, so you'll always have the latest version of that one) so it's safe to keep any other manuals in there.

combined x86/x64 launcher?

Hi,
I know that some of the programs here (like JKDefrag or 7Zip) have both the 32- and 64-bit versions of the program together, and the launcher automatically determines which to use. Would this be possible with the Reaper launcher as well?

Thanks for all the work you've done on this launcher already!!!

That's a good idea

That's a good idea but I don't have the kit to test the x64 one. To be honest, I don't know anything about x64 in general. Is there the possibility that it would behave differently (regkeys etc.) or is it expected to function in the same way? I downloaded it and saw that the filenames and directory structure were all the same so if somebody wanted to test the launcher with the x64 one then provide a regshot or just verify that there aren't any issues then that would be very helpful.

I also presume that running either version with the same data/projects is not a problem?

No Real Reason

We only do this for a very select set of apps when it is required or there is a big advantage for doing so: https://portableapps.com/node/24371

For most apps, it's pretty pointless as all it does is double the install size with no performance benefit.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Quick check on that

Yes, to purchase a license, it costs money. Technically, if you don't pay, it's an evaluation version. It's on their site as such. So, as long as he's not packaging any extras you get with a license, he should be fine.

hmm Hope I don't get kicked for this :)

Is it realized that you can simply do a portable install of the new reaper version to
[drive]: \ [portable apps dir] \ Portableapps \ Reaperportable \ app \ Reaper \
and this will run the newest reaper with your portable apps front end? I have a reaper license and this is great for me at college.
OK NEVERMIND THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS TRYING TO RUN THE PROGRAM EVEN THOUGH IT STARTS UP JUST FINE.
Which brings me to my next question. Would it be possible to have an option to provide your own shortcuts to run programs from your portable apps interface? All I would have to do is put a shortcut in there for my standard reaper installation that was performed with the portable option to my external drive. Reaper has its own portable option at install but It would be really nice to be able to create a shortcut to it on the portable apps popup in the task tray. Thanks
