where takes gimp fonts?

I have some problem with the gimp portable. I wanted work on some picture and add some little bit special font. This font I have previously installed on the host PC, normal apps like winword etc offered it for use.

Only gimp portable could not find the particular font. Furthermore I have noticed it offers only part of the fonts installed on the host machine.

Where does the gimp portable loads the fonts it is using from? Is there any restriction on what fonts it is using?

RE: where takes gimp fonts?

I don't know where the fonts are located but if you want to add new fonts follow these instructions:

    1. shutdown gimp.

2.Go to "D:\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\share\gimp\2.0"(D:\ this is the root I've put it in.)

    3. make a new folder and call it "fonts".

    4. put all your .ttf-files in this folder.

    5. restart GIMP.

I'm using GIMP Portable 2.6.5 and it works perfectly for me.

I don't know about any restrictions on the fonts it's using.

Hopes this helps.:)

Cache?

Doesn't it cache them somewhere? I vaguely remember reading that Gimp stores a cache of fonts, so if you install a new font you have to flush the cache.

*goes off to hunt for the mystery text*

RE: Cache?

I've worked with GIMP and GIMP Portable a long time (around 2 years) and with a lot of font-files in the font-folder and I haven't had any problems with the cache.

I thing the cache-file for fonts is located here in GIMP Portable 2.6.5:

D:\GIMPPortable\App\DefaultData\settings\fontconfig\cache

Those are copied over for a new install of GIMP Portable.

The contents (in any portable app) of DefaultData is copied over on a new install of the application.

You want stuff in Data\settings.

Adding new fonts to gimp ==

Adding new fonts to gimp == reinstall. At least the version before the latest did, I don't know if it still acts like that in the latest. I don't seem to remember it doing it in 2.2.

If you do edit, preferences,

If you do edit, preferences, and then folders, fonts, you can add directoies for the GIMP to get fonts from. You may have to reinstall GIMP to get it to work :(. I'm still working out how to get the fonts to work right, as it seems bugged.

You can also try portable fonts from wraithdu. It may work better for you, but you'll have to run portable fonts before you run the gimp and run portable fonts after.
Check out the main page for portable fonts, its actually rather easy to achive with the menu and autoclose (but a search can find that one easily ;))

Also, you have to be diligent, or you'll evoke the 'get a real operating system'
responses.

*EDIT*
I seem to have gotten it:

  1. Delete all the cache files in Data\settings\fontconfig
  2. Rename Data\settings\fontconfig to Data\settings\fontconfig-something else
  3. Rename App\gimp\etc\fonts to App\gimp\etc\fonts-something else.
  4. Run GIMP Portable and close
  5. Rename Data\settings\fontconfig-something to Data\settings\fontconfig
  6. in App\Gimp\bin you will find a new folder. Copy the contents to Data\settings\fontconfig
  7. Rename App\gimp\etc\fonts-something to App\gimp\etc\fonts
  8. Run GIMP and enjoy fonts.
