Application: Glary Utilities
Category: Utilities
License: Freeware
Language: Multilingual
Description: Glary Utilities Portable is a PortableApps.com Launcher for the popular Glary Utilities. It has all the same great features as Glary Utilities including powerful, easy-to-use system tools and utilities to fix, speed up, maintain and protect your PC and more. Plus, it leaves no personal information behind on the machine you run it on.

Download Glary Utilities Portable 2.x.x.x Development Test 1 [1+8MB download / 19MB installed]
(MD5: 9eb61ef1ddc3eb17ed14c6e1edf29ea1)
Online Installer: This is an online installer that will download additional files during setup.

Release Notes:

2.x.x.x Development Test 1 (2010-11-30):

  • MD5 check removed (installer will now download latest version).

2.28.0.1011 Development Test 1 (2010-09-22):

  • Glary Utilities updated to 2.28.0.1011.

2.27.0.982 Development Test 1 (2010-08-23):

  • Glary Utilities updated to 2.27.0.982.
  • Installer will preserve the app if a download fails.

2.26.0.956 Development Test 1 (2010-07-08):

  • Glary Utilities updated to 2.26.0.956.
  • Added CheckForPlatformSplashDisable (not tested yet).

2.23.0.923 Development Test 1 (2010-05-28):

  • Glary Utilities updated to 2.23.0.923.

2.21.0.863 Development Test 1 (2010-04-09):

  • Glary Utilities updated to 2.21.0.863.
  • Added SecondaryLaunch/Cleanup check.
  • Removed the abilty to change the name of the app/settings directories and the program executable with the INI.
  • MD5 removed from "installer.ini" so it should be good for an upgrade.

2.20.0.831 Development Test 1 (2010-02-28):

  • Glary Utilities updated to 2.20.0.831.

2.19.0.800 Development Test 4 (2010-02-05):

  • Adding Glary Utilities Portable to the Windows startup items list is now an option in "GlaryUtilitiesPortable.ini". The default is "true" and disabling it is *not* recommended! See "Readme.txt".

2.19.0.800 Development Test 3 (2010-01-28):

  • Forgot to add drive switching. Drive switching added.
  • There is still some weirdness with the saved settings. Skin setting is saved... until you change drives. Lots of other settings aren't so something is still being overwritten on startup.
  • Clean install recommended.

2.19.0.800 Development Test 2 (2010-01-28):

  • Settings are now saved correctly. Thanks sl23. And no thanks to me...

2.19.0.800 Development Test 1 (2010-01-27):

  • Glary Utilities updated to 2.19.0.800. No issues.

2.18.0.786 Development Test 2 (2010-01-06):

  • Added UAC plugin to run launcher as admin. Testers on 7/Vista required!

2.18.0.786 Development Test 1 (2009-12-23):

  • Added new Portugese translation to launcher.
  • Removed 'Preserve App Directory' code in installer as it's too complicated to maintain here. From now on, the app directory will *not* survive a failed upgrade/reinstall. So make a backup before trying :-)
  • Tweaked $REBOOT code.

2.17.0.776 Development Test 2 (2009-12-11):

  • Fixed bug in post install code that caused an upgrade to fail.
EDIT: If you're upgrading, delete the "App\Glary Utilities Portable" folder first :-)

2.17.0.776 Development Test 1 (2009-11-19):

  • Glary Utilities updated to 2.17.0.776. No issues. Well, none that weren't in the last version anyway :-)
  • I couldn't check the 'registry optimize/reboot' thing as it said my registry didn't need it so I wasn't given the option! Nothing else seems to have changed so I presume that hasn't either. You can report any problems below.
  • Optimized $SETTINGSDIRECTORY code.
  • Fixed app name bug in "GlaryUtilitiesPortable.ini".
  • Minor PAF fixes.

2.16.0.758 Development Test 1 (2009-09-25):

  • App has been updated to 2.16.0.758. No issues.

2.15.0.738 Development Test 4 (2009-09-21):

  • The app now survives a reboot and cleans up properly after the registry defragmenter (see notes below).
  • Extended "CheckRunning" to include all the EXE files the app uses.

2.15.0.738 Development Test 3 (2009-09-04):

  • It's too easy to leave the Memory Optimizer open in the system tray after shutting down the main app. If you then close the Memory Optimizer, a registry key is left behind (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\GlarySoft\Glary Utilities\MemDefrag). The launcher now waits for the Memory Optimizer to close before exiting and cleaning up properly.

2.15.0.738 Development Test 2 (2009-08-24):

  • Fixes for a couple of files left over in the TEMP directory after checking for updates (thanks horusofoz).

2.15.0.738 Development Test 1 (2009-08-20): Initial release

Notes:
When running, Glary Utilities Portable will temporarily appear in MSConfig/Startup. This is intentional. Do not remove!

You can go ahead and reboot the computer after using the Registry Defragmenter. GUP will run at startup and you can carry on working or close it.

  • 2.15.0.738 Development Test 4:
If you've rebooted previous versions after using the Registry Defragmenter you may be left with duplicate files/folders which won't be moving correctly. The easiest way to fix this is to backup/delete the files in your settings directory. There's nothing critical being saved and they'll be recreated if missing anyway. If you have no local installation you can also delete the "HKCU\Software\GlarySoft\Glary Utilities" registry key and it's parent "HKCU\Software\GlarySoft" (if left empty).

The app overwrites any some saved preferences with the defaults at startup.

Tested with:
7 Home Premium (Admin)
XP Home SP2 (Admin)
XP Home SP3 (Admin)

EDIT: I gotta say I love this live installer set up.

EDIT2: How is this likely to handle updates as I recall apps like this update very frequently?

As I'm checking the MD5 for the download as recommended in the spec, it'll break on every update. I'll just have to keep on top of it but, failing that :-), I could always upload a version without it. If that was the case I couldn't vouch for the upgrades though. We'll see how it goes. Your timely prompts are always appreciated :-)

Good News!

I just experimented with the built in updater and it doesn't leave anything unacceptable behind. It adds another entry in the MUI cache in addition to the Glary Portable entry but i believe the MUI is fine. Well done mate Smile

Doesn't it just check for

Doesn't it just check for updates and then offer to open your browser at the download page? There shouldn't be a problem with any of that. If it auto-updated the app, then we'd be in trouble :-)

Having said that, checking for updates does create a couple of files in the TEMP directory (which aren't deleted) that I hadn't noticed before so I updated to dev test 2.

A repeat?

I'm using the 2.5 dev test2 launcher and it works the same. The only thing I did different is that I installed the newer version of glary utilities.

Same thing with another beta portapp that I use, Opera Usb Portable. It says for version 9.27 but I'm using 9.64.

Not a problem...

I'm just saying that it is kind of like a duplicate of the older 2.5 version of the launcher.

There are several dialog boxes in the modules section (Disk Cleaner, Shortcuts Fixer, Disk Analysis, Duplicate Files Finder, Empty Folders Finder) where you can select which drives to scan but really it's a tool (similar to CCleaner) that allows you to work on the host system.

This is based on the author's

This is based on the author's portable version and it writes the default values to the registry on startup instead of reading what's already there. Which is the reason why it doesn't save the skin setting either. Some things are saved to the INI but not many and that is one of them. All very strange.

The original version writes heavily to the system so I think we just have to accept it for what it is.

Thanks for the screenshot.

Thanks for the screenshot. That's the key the app writes to. If it's still there when the portable version isn't running then it'll belong to the local install. If you've uninstalled that, then you can delete those keys. Maybe export them to a backup first?

Remember to close then reopen regedit when you're checking this stuff out as it doesn't refresh properly otherwise.

Hmm...

I actually haven't installed the local version on this pc. I think it may have been caused from using individual modules. Most likely the registry defragmenter as this requires a system reboot. Can't reproduce at the moment.

Not really sure about that

Not really sure about that one, to be honest. At a guess, as it's referencing the installer rather than the app, I don't think there's too much to worry about. It's not appearing here, although there are various others things under that key, portable and otherwise. No installers though...

If someone with more knowledge chips in and says I need to fix it, I'll happily do so.

May I ask if anyone has had a problem installing this program? I have tried several times with the most recent installer and receive an error message that the downloaded file of the Glary utilities is not valid and wondered if anyone else had had this problem.

I've been using this without issue. Recently Glary updated and that may have killed the launcher. I'll test now.

EDIT: Confirmed. I suspect it is caused by Glary updating their app and it affecting the live installer through a version check.

I find not great that one

I find not great that one packs a program which is already in the PortableApps.comFormat again in a PA.com-Launcher. Nevertheless, it would be much better to provide a real Launcher, because also of the Launcher of Glary Utilities tracks leave in the Registry.

General comment

This isn't exactly about the GlaryUtilitiesPortable, but this is where I noticed it.

Up top, you have the statement "[660KB download / 15.6MB installed]" and later "This is an online installer that will download additional files during setup." which is technically correct, but really isn't the entire story. The additional file download adds another 5.77 megs onto the 660kb launcher download.

Sitting here on a broadband connection, this is really immaterial to me. For others, though, it might make a difference between when they download the installer, and when they actually run the installer.

I'm not sure how you'd want to present the information differently, but it seems like it should apply to all of the live installers, and thus may require an official policy decision.

For instance:

  • [660KB + 5.77MB / 15.6MB installed] or
  • [660KB / 15.6MB installed] and mention the extra size in the additional files comment

Or heck, it could be a totally different idea.

Eventually, the numbers end up on the big red download button, so that should be a consideration, too.

BTW, between this and the Nir launcher, I've eliminated a lot of packages that I use. Thanks! It is really appreciated.

Live Installer

The figures quoted refer to disk space whereas the "additional file download" is just bandwidth. The file is downloaded to the system's TEMP folder but is deleted when the installer closes (as I understand it). I see what you're saying though.

Glad you're finding them useful Smile

We Round

We list both and round off for official listings. So, in this case, it would be:

Is it Just Me...

or does the launcher not actually work? I've installed it in default PA directory and it shows on menu ok, but if I click on GlaryUtilitiesPortable I only get a screen up from another program called StartUpMonitor asking me whether to allow GUP to startup with system?

First run, I clicked no but GUP didnt start.
Second run, I clicked yes but GUP still failed to start.

Then I used Autoruns to check if GUP was registered to start with system but couldn't find anything to do with GUP at all????

Strange.

I think this is an excellent addition to PAP and look forward to a fix and hopefully the official release.

Excellent work.

Maybe...

Smile

Is it this one you're using? http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml

I don't know the program but, as it's normal for GUP to be added to startup on every run (and removed on exit), 'Yes' would be the correct answer.

Glary Utilities did download and is present in the App directory?

All I can suggest at the moment is a clean install and make sure it's not registered to startup (sounds like you already did that with Autoruns). Get back and let me know if it's still not working.

It works fine I used it for

It works fine I used it for several cleanup duties but it wont start from the PA Menu or directly from the launcher.

I haven't a clue what i'm doing but I took a look at the /appinfo/.ini file and noticed that the path to the .exe includes 'Portable' at the end of the name in all places but the .exe is missing this word. The confusing thing for me, not hard, is that if you change the .exe to GlaryUtilitiesPortable the launcher then comes up with an error saying it cant find GlaryUtilities.exe???

I think thats something you are more capable of figuring this out than me, jus thought try to help.

EDIT: btw yes it is that startupmonitor program that i use.

EDIT: jus wondered, if a PA.com app is started from launcher it cleans up all activity when closed yes? Does the same thing happen when a PA.com app is started without using the launcher but direct from the app's .exe file. It's not really important for me to know but was just curious. It may be useful for others to know.

Err... OK

There's no problem starting from PA.c menu or direct from the launcher here, there's nothing unusual happening in appinfo.ini, so again, the only advice I can offer you is to reinstall clean & report back, in detail, with any problems. I really want to help you here, but I need more info Smile

To answer your other question, yes, it's the launcher that does all the work re: 'portablizing' and if you just start the EXE (App\AppName\AppName.exe), results are not guaranteed Sad

Here's what happens...

I re-installed as you requested. When I start GlaryUtilities, first I get the black and white dev splash screen then startup monitor asks if I want to allow GUP to startup with windows to which I reply 'No', and thats it, nothing else happens. At least nothing visual.

Thanks for your reply

Startup

Looking at the launcher, I can't see any reason why Glary Utilities would fail to run if startup was disabled. As you see the dev test splash, can I assume that it's now starting OK from the menu and directly from the launcher? And I'm presuming StartupMonitor let's the app load even if it blocks startup?

There is a bug in my post install code so I've uploaded DT2 which should fix it but, again, I can't see how it would cause your problem. Could you download the new version and test again, just to make sure?

I just re-read one of my previous comments and thought it was a little ambiguous so, just to clarify, when I said "a clean install and make sure it's not registered to startup", I meant that you should do both of those before running the reinstalled app. Then when you do run it, you should let it get added to startup (in case you use the Registry Defrag option, which requires a reboot). It'll be removed from startup on a normal exit. Hope that's clear, I'm confusing myself now LOL.

If it still doesn't work, is it possible for you to disable Startup Monitor temporarily, just to try and narrow down what's going on?

ok, I disabled startup

ok, I disabled startup monitor and checked with autoruns to see if GUP is registered for startup and there was nothing there to do with GUP.

tried starting again, same thing start GUP, splash screen, then nothing, task manager shows no sign of GUP in apps, processes or services.

do you have any other ideas?

Thanks

More Things

Re: DT2. Yeah, I didn't think the bug would be causing your problem but when I was looking through the package for potential problems I noticed it & had to fix Smile

Anyway, sounds like you've done all the usual tests but there are a couple more things we could try -

Go into the app directory & see if you can run the program without the launcher (not sure whether you've already tried this). The file to run is "X:\PortableApps\GlaryUtilitiesPortable\App\Glary Utilities Portable\GlaryUtilities.exe" (it should be the only one in there). As long as you just open and close the app, it'll only leave a couple of things on the machine - "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\GlarySoft" in the registry & "~gu-ver.dat" in the %TEMP% folder. You'll have to clean them up manually (let me know if you need any help with that).

If it works, get back to me. If not, go here, download the portable version (ZIP format) & see if that works. Again, if you just open and close to check it, it'll only leave those two things on the machine.

Good luck, hope we can get this sorted Smile

P.S. It would be a good idea to leave StartupMonitor disabled while you do all this.

Go into the app directory & see if you can run the program without the launcher (not sure whether you've already tried this).

Indeed I have already tried and I did say above, which was the reason for my question as to whether or not starting the .exe is different from starting the launcher, ie does the .exe leave stuff on ur pc? I did find a file somewhere, think it was in %AppData% sys folder to do with GUP though not sure if this was put there by the launcher itself or because I bypassed the launcher. I'll check that and let you know.

Exactly LOL

I'll keep an eye on the Revo thread as scriptdaemon can reproduce the problem.

Ok. My fault, though I plead ignorance!!!

I think I may have figured out the problem, though it was suggested by someone on the Revo Uninstaller post.

I use the R34MOD for PAM v1.52 which doesnt allow right click/Run as Admin. Could this be the cause of GUP not starting?

Tried installing this update but the online installer doesnt seem to want to work somethings getting corrupted, at least thats the message i get.

Tried manual d/l all ok. Tried the Paf launcher with both the .exe and portable versions of GUP but the launcher is still unable to locate the GlaryUtilities.exe
What exactly is the correct path name to it? Just so I can check my manual install is correct.

Thanks

Run as Admin

Yes, that's the problem. I've reconfigured the launcher to run as admin without any user intervention so you should be OK to use it with the R34MOD.

The reason your install is failing is because it's been updated (new version up top). You *can* update manually but there's a bit of renaming to be done as GlaryUtilitiesPortable.exe (launcher) cannot run GlaryUtilitiesPortable.exe (app).

Anyway, I recommend you trash your current GlaryUtilitiesPortable folder and install this latest one. Hopefully we've cracked it. Let me know.

P.S. Total Uninstall should be fixed too (I think you were having the same problem with that).

P.P.S. Correct paths are -

GlaryUtilitiesPortable
   |_App
       |_Glary Utilities
           |_App
           |_GlaryUtilities.exe

EDIT1: Added paths.
EDIT2: Corrected paths!

Great Work!

Loving this app, seems to be working great on XP (admin rights). It's like a Swiss army knife of system cleanup. I'd love to see this become a PA.c staple.

admin rights required?

Do you have to have admin rights to run Glary? I'm pretty sure I've run it on XP under an account without them but I suppose it depends on what you're trying to "clean" or do.

does the d/l link work?

I keep getting page not found.

EDIT: got it, and.... IT WORKS
EDIT2: Erm... it doesn't save my settings. I have been using the Portable version direct from the publisher site which works ok. Is that the version you have used for the paf launcher?

Settings

Last time I checked, it only saved a few settings in an INI and the regstry ones were overwritten every time on startup. Has that changed? Sounds like it has, I'll check it out.

EDIT1: Hmm... I can save the settings but the app is still overwrting the registry on startup. I'm testing with the skin setting & using the portable version from the website. Was the skin setting saved for you in the version you were using?

EDIT2: OK, got it. I confess, stupid mistake by me, there are two "data" folders that need moving and I was only moving one of them. Uploading now...

Hooray!!

Smile

Well done prapper... All seems fine now. Thanks for your hard work Smile

I have a question, though I suspect it's to do with the app rather than the launcher, but each time I launch I get a request from StartupManager asking whether I should allow GUP to start with windows. Is there any way to disable this? I expect it needs an option in the app itself, yes?

Thanks again...

Scott

EDIT: I just checked the settings and there's already an option for start with windows, also there are two other options (minimize to tray & show ballon tips), but they're 'greyed out' why is that? The strange thing is that the system startup option isnt ticked??? so why do I get asked by StartupMngr if I want it to?

Start with windows

sl23 I get a request from StartupManager asking whether I should allow GUP to start with windows. Is there any way to disable this?

I've set the GUP launcher to add itself temporarily to startup *in case* you use the registry defrag option (which reboots the system when it finishes and kills all running apps, including the launcher so no clean up). If you do reboot, the launcher will start again with Windows (minus all the backing up stuff) and then clean up when you exit the app (and remove itself from startup). Otherwise files and regkeys will be left on the system. I'm not sure why the original portable version even allows this (and many other things!) but it does so I've "fixed" it LOL.

Having said all that, I've now made it an option in the INI so if you *really* aren't going to use it and the -yoursecurityprogramhere- warning *really* bugs you, you can switch it off Smile

(minimize to tray & show ballon tips), but they're 'greyed out' why is that?

They're disabled by the app so I can't do anything to change that. I don't know why, because some of the 'helper' apps that GU uses remain minimized in the tray when you exit them (see the release notes for 2009-09-04).

system startup option isnt ticked

See above, it's a feature of the launcher rather than the app.

Aha!!

So that's why! I see why it's needed now thanks for clearing that up and for adding the option in the .ini file. I'll probably leave it as is though, now I know why it does it I'm happy to leave it.

Thanks again for your work on this it's greatly appreciated.

Thumbs up to prapper Biggrin

Should be an official release soon then eh? Wink

Thank you Smile

EDIT: Houston, we have a problem. Not sure hoe big this is but when I first tried to launch Glary I had error messages coming up because the launcher was looking for Glary under my previous drive letter. By deleting my Data folder I was able to stop the error message. I'm guessing I'll need to do that each time the drive letter changes until the bu is fixed.

Maybe I missed it before, but why can't I change anything in the General and AutoCare tabs of Settings?

I was in there trying to turn off the "phone home" feature, which I can't seem to control either.

Does the non-portable version do the same thing?

Is it too far over the top to tame it?

Not sure

I can't remember, to be honest. The only thing I can recall from looking at it was thinking "no way" Smile I might dig the install log out sometime to check (that it's too far over the top) but don't hold yer breath...

I've been wanting to say this for a long time, but I keep

forgetting.

A few months ago, I used Glary Utilities to clean up my mom's boss's laptop. It had been running slow lately and I thought maybe I could fix it.

Well, I ran the registry cleaner and it said that it would be 15% more efficient or emptier or something like that.

And it also said that it was gonna restart the computer... but my flash drive was still in it!

I thought... what's the worse thing that could happen? And I waited for it to shut down, took it out, and then it turned on again. I thought it was better, but the next time I visited the (workplace?) I learned that it had been working even slower.

So I guess I'm asking...

How am I supposed to clean the registry?

registry cleaners don't do a

registry cleaners don't do a whole lot of good, and can actually cause issues. i use ccleaner, but i always create a backup just in case.

The biggest issue with slow machines is bloated temp directories, cookies or way too many apps running on startup.

Yeah, I cleaned that up

too.

But its still really slow... I mean it takes close to 5 minutes to start internet explorer. I also edited the startup tasks and a bunch of other seemingly good stuff, but it didn't help.

other things to try...

Nobody said you were stupid, we're just throwing out suggestions.

Did you try SpyDLLRemover? Maybe some rogue processes are wasting CPU time/memory?

As for a Virus Scan why not just let it run overnight?

Check how much RAM Windows is reporting and how much the user things there should be. Maybe RAM is faulty.

You might want to try to run something like HDTune on the hard disk make sure it's not suffering significant failure (multiple bad sectors).

Also, in GlaryUtilities under the Modules tab -> System Tools -> Windows Standard Tools you'll find "System File Checker". You could try running this to see if some Windows files have been changed. Perhaps the computer had a virus at one time but it was removed, but some of it's carnage remains. You'll need a Windows CD if you do this.

What about a system restore? Was there a period where the laptop was running smoothly? I'd recommend all documents are backed-up before you go messing with all this. Also, I'd second the suggestion to do most of this stuff in safe-mode.

ok

Yes. Killed all processes that seemed useless and (thanks to Google) managed startup programs (got it down to 4 or 5, I don't remember).

The job opens every other day, and I don't want to hassle asking the boss to open it in the middle of a non-business day.

512 MB RAM. Windows says 499 MB, but I don't think that would do much better.

Never tried HDTune (will try next time I get the chance)

System file checker took longer than the virus scan.

I suggested re-installing Windows, if she had the CD, but she doesn't, so she can't do system restore and she doesn't have backups.

Suggestions.

Try booting into Safe Mode and see if the machine is still laggy. I second the defrag suggestion and also suggest suggest Glary's one click maintenance, CCleaner, Use Revo Uninstaller to remove any unneeded software, CleanAfterMe and RegSeeker. Check the Piriform forums for an INI file you can add to CCleaner to have it clean more programs.

Also try a thorough virus scan with whatever is installed and then do the same with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Could be the machine's resources are being used remotely eg. botnet.

Good luck!
