I'd really like to have Microsoft Reader turned portable. I used the Registry Rocker program I found in this forum but I ran into problems... with the launcher that NSIS makes it loads up msreader.exe, I see it for a second on my screen, then it disapears but I see the icon when I do an alt-tab and it's still in memory.
I'd be very appreciative if someone could help me out here.
I'm not a developer, but I don't think anything with "Microsoft" in the title can truly be made portable.
1. Not open source
2. Registry
3. Not free.

MS provides free for download viewers for word, excel and powerpoint. Don't know what license says about redistribution though.

You can only redistribute them as-is in installer form with no modifications.

...you could of course use https://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable

I am mistaken OpenOffice doesn't support .lit files, which is the only reason that you would want to use Microsoft Reader.

That's why there's Convert LIT. Open source (GPLed). Converts from the proprietary LIT format to the Open eBook format. It's XHTML in a JAR (aka Zip) container. Opera and a few other things read it. Maybe someone could make a Firefox extension/plugin to handle it.

I know how to covert lit files. But what if I don't want to convert them? I happen to like lit files. I just want to read them on the go.
EDIT: I think this came off a bit wrong with the first posting. To clarify:
I like the way my .lit books are formatted. I like the simulated pages. It's all very nice and handy. I also own several books that are incredibly nicely put together as .lit files and all the conversions I've tried on them just ruins them.
I'm pretty sure the whole simulated pages thing is a function of the software used to show the book and isn't actually a part of the LIT file format. (it's Microsoft Reader that's showing those fake pages) So, basically, you want an ebook reader that looks like MS Reader to be portable, then. I'm not too familiar with ebook readers myself (I don't like reading books on a computer screen) but perhaps someone else is.

...because there is no link and description of the program I thought it was something else.
Sorry.

...good lesson for posting a link to what you are requesting. I had no idea what Microsoft Reader was I assumes it was a viewer program for MS Office files.
Sooo Search!!!
