Wink Portable 2.0

I have created a new portable version of Wink, a 'Tutorial and Presentation' creation software. Using Wink you can capture screenshots, add explanations boxes, buttons, titles etc and generate a highly effective tutorial for your users.

Features:

  • Directory structure is compatible to portableapps.com
  • uses installed settings
  • fancy splash-screen

The selfextracting archive can be downloaded from its current location.

The download link (N/A): Latest Wink forum topic

Please note link has been updated as of 1/11/06!
Updated 10/01/07 - corrected temporary registry key
Updated 03/02/07 - based on 0.9 PAF for PAM compatability
Updated 03/03/08 - removed link as new launcher is to be added shortly...added link to latest forum topic

Registry Query

Hello fellow Hullite,

This installed and launched perfectly for me from my thumbdrive.

When I launched this application from my thumbdrive my firewall flashed up 3 seperate warnings relating to regedit (see quote below).

Is this application leaving registry entries behind and if so are they purged after the application is exited?

Jon

Registry

The registry files are removed when the program is closed. There are 3 seperate registry entries that are temporarily used for the program to function. These can be viewed in the WinkPortable/Data/Registry folder if you want to investigate further.

Nice to see another Hull guy on the forums.

Let me know if you have any more queries.

Thanks for the prompt

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I'm not sure how far your testing has gone or how you've configured the purging of registry entries after the program is closed so you may not yet know the answer to the following question.

Should the application crash, rather than being manually closed through the menu, are the registry entries still cleared?

It doesn't make a lot of differece to myself leaving no trace of portable applications opened on the host computer, but I know there's plenty on here who are sensitive to anything left behind once the applications are closed and the thumbdrive removed.

Thanks,
Jon

Portable Applications Template

I used the latest Portable Applications Template created by Karl Loncarek (Klonk).

Quote from his accompanying text:
'The key problem of "normal" applications is that they leave traces on the
computer that they are running on. Those traces could be registry keys,
directories with files, or setting files (e.g. .INI files) themselves.
This template is a NSIS source. It uses the same technique as all the
applications that could be found on http://portableapps.com .

First of all you have to trace what changes are done on your system when
installing an application. Personally I use the freeware version of Total
Uninstall, but you can use any other tracing software you like.

On some applications additional changes in e.g. configuration files have to be
done, mainly regarding path settings. You have to check if you could use
relative paths (the easiest thing as you don't have to do anything else) or if
you have to change a drive letter each time you start the Launcher. This has
to be configured manually (see source).

Beware also of settings which are only possible with administartion rights. It
might happen that you don't have adminstration rights on the host computer. In
such a case the application might not run.'

Ryan and Steve played with it before release and reported no problems. Regarding the crash of an app and the removal of any temporary settings, I do not have the answer - hopefully someone else may be able to contribute with this.

Updated thanks to 'allesklar'

Release has been updated due to a registry error. Thanks to 'allesklar' for spotting it and letting me know. Please let me know if any errors still exist. Hopefully this is resolved now :).

Thanks for the credit

Everything seems fine now, no traces left behind. Biggrin
Only two minor issues, not affecting portability,

  • In my tests, file RegKey2.reg (settings for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) doesn't seem to be needed, if I delete it, it's not created again.
  • The included .ini configuration file is not properly formatted :?. Of course this is easily solved after reading the readme.txt.

Thx again.
