Very long process

Hi everyone --

I use Toucan everyday to save my work from my office computer to a flash drive, and vice versa.

I love it but I have some problems.

I use it as Mirror, with Retain Attributes / Ignore Read-Only / Ignore Daylight Savings. The sync is very fast, even with folders with a huge amount of files within. However, the process is very slowed down when it arrives to a folder containing only .pdf files (but more than 2,000 files). Even when no files is copied (because nothing has changed since the last update) it takes very long. However, the issue does not seem to be related to the amount of files in the folder because it is very fast when files are .txt (even numerous ones).

Is it a normal behavior of Toucan regarding pdf files (or folders with big amount of files) or is there something I coudl do to speed the process? I can't zip all the files to have only one zip files because I open them everyday from a reference manager software.

Mant thanks for your help

It

may well be the sheer volume of files, roughly how big is the folder? I would certainly suggest trying the new pre-release as there have been lots of sync improvements.

It's flash media...

I will vouch for this being flash media. If I copy one 512MB file to my flash drive it copies ten times faster than copying 512 1MB files. This I tested using Explorer in XP. It makes sense though, since the way flash works is that it copies the data out of an entire block of the flash device, adds the data, erases the block, then copies the data back. This is one of the nasty down-sides to flash media, aside from only lasting for around 10k writes.

Here is a link to a fairly good article on why flash memory wears out, especially if you change filesystem cluster sizes and such!

Flash

Hi,

I know this issue. However, I guess that it's not the problem here because the process is very long even if no files are copied (i.e. if no changes have been made in the folder before the sync process)
