working "offline" and animatd gifs

I'm stuck with dial-up. I often leave Firefox open and minimized when I go off line. About half the time, when I reconnect, the "work offline" doodad is checked. Its just annoying. The older version of FF didn't do that. The only non "portable-apps" applications on my USB drive are RQ Money and Monex. Is something "calling home"?

Any way to make FF stop doing that?

And... Those animated "gifs" in message board signatures that seem to be all the rage. They make everyplace look like (so the tell me) a sleazy p*rn site. Is there any way to turn those off without blocking all images from the particular forum. Even if I take the time to log in, some sites don't have the option to "block user".

Thanks.

Not exactly

I don't think you can block animated GIF files specifically. At the very least you'd have to download them first so that the browser can tell they're animated. (I think). Then you'd have to use something like AdBlockPlus, but you'd have to block filenames of specific, known animated GIFs (which could be possible if there are common smilies used among software).

You can tell Firefox not to animate them I believe. If you type about:config in the URL bar and search for the key image.animation_mode, you can set this to "none" to turn off animations. While this doesn't save bandwidth, it can reduce the annoyance factor.

Thanks Darkbee. They're

Thanks Darkbee. They're usually pretty small so it's mainly an annoyance. Sort of like a toddler in a grocery store pulling mommy's clothes and yelling "MOMMY" repeatedly to get attention.

Now that I know what I'm looking for I should be able to turn it off. I'm not computer literate enough to start changing things without some guidance.

The Other Issue

Don't have a solution for your offline problem, sorry. Other than perhaps check Windows network settings on the Control Panel, I believe there's something there about working offline, and trying to connect automatically, and what not. It may or may not help. Sorry, that's pretty vague I know but I don't used dial-up anymore.

This addon can disable the auto work-offline.

Disable Automatic Offline Management

NoScript can disable animated GIF's, you should set it so that's all it does.

Thanks all. I think I had No-Script for a while and got rid of it for some unremembered reason. Maybe I'll try it again.

For stopping annoying

For stopping annoying animated GIFs, and such, I use a toolbar button called "Animation" made with Custom Toolbar Buttons Maker at:

http://codefisher.org/toolbar_button/toolbar_button_maker

I find it useful because it's easy to switch it "off", when in need to see the animation (though it requires reloading the page).
There are other buttons I find especially useful, from the "Toggle" category, like "Toggle JavaScript", "Page Colors", "Toggle Cookies", and a few more.
