Panda disables spyware, Portable Gimp stops working

Portable GIMP 2.2.12 has been working well on my Windows XP machine. Today when starting the program, Panda Internet Security 2005 Platinum popped up a dialog reporting that it had neutralized spyware. Portable GIMP then stopped loading with a dialog reporting "gimp-2.2.exe - Unable To Locate Component" in the title bar, "This application has failed to start because intl.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." in the text portion of the dialog.

The Panda popup says the adware it neutralized was "Adware/DesktopMedia" in the location "...\temp\nspf.temp\system.dll"

The Panda page provided for additional information is at this address:

http://www.pandasoftware.com/virus_info/encyclopedia/ficha.aspx?iddetecc...

and indicates that detection of this adware was last updated Oct. 10, 2006, exactly the same day my Portable GIMP stopped working.

Reinstall

Reinstall GIMP Portable and report the false-positive to Panda. The file system.dll is part of the Nullsoft Scriptable Installer System (which is what the launcher is written in) and is used to handle setting the GIMP environment variables for its settings path, gtk and language. It can't be infected with anything as it is contained within GIMPPortable.exe and extracted on launch. GIMPPortable.exe has a built in CRC check that can detect if it has been altered in any way.

Any antivirus/antispyware that "helpfully" removes "infected" files without notifying the user is either poorly configured or poorly written.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

False-positive report sent

I didn't think it was your problem, but wanted to alert you of the exact circumstances in case others ran into the same problem.

I've notified Panda of the situation and attached your response. I'll update this thread if Panda resolves the situation.

Panda responds

Panda tech support sent the following:

Go to your Start Menu
Click on Run
Type in %Temp% and click OK
Delete all the contents in that folder.

It is okay if some of the files can not be deleted. This just means they are currently being used by either Windows or a running application.

Re-install your application and once you try to run it, see if Panda pops up stating if you would like to allow this connection. Make sure you allow it.

===========================

After deleting the files in the %temp% folder and reinstalling, Panda did nothing to interfere with the program operation on repeated restarts.
