Fast-track, please?

John, could we please try to fast-track this to official release status? I spoke with the System Explorer developer, who apparently wants to support PortableApps but had his test release die from lack of activity/interest.
Here's part of what his e-mail said:

Hi, I already made test of System Explorer PortableApps installer half year ago. but I did not know how to make it public in your portableapps.com system.

IMHO, fast-tracking this would be a good move, in more ways than one.

Few Weeks

Ok, but it may be a few weeks until we start the new app flood. We have some internal stuff to finish up first. But let the author know that as soon as we start, we'll be getting System Explorer in since he's on-board.

OK, thanks! I'll pass that

OK, thanks! I'll pass that along. I'll also put a [Testers wanted] sign in the topic title, to make sure we get as much feedback as possible before the next app flood.

Still fast-track?

I've been in contact with the System Explorer developers. They're happy about the upcoming official release, but would like me to remain in charge of it because they're quite busy with other things.
Based on your wording, I'm pretty sure you wanted to fast-track System Explorer Portable since the authors would be taking over. Since that's no longer the case, is System Explorer Portable being put back in the normal app queue?
(Note: although the System Explorer devs aren't going to maintain the System Explorer Portable package, I'm 99% sure they'll be willing to link to the package and they may possibly even host it themselves.)

Don't get me wrong, but...

if they already done a DT, why to do one again...
instead of testing their version and give them feed-back ?

Like this lots of apps will 'die' from lack of activity !

Outdated

Their DT is outdated in just about every way. Their packaged version of System Explorer is 2.0; this one is 2.2.3. Their PAI is probably 1.0, while this one is using 2.0.2. This is also using PAL instead of a hand-coded launcher.
If the author wants to take back over once System Explorer Portable goes official, I don't have a problem giving it back. For now, though, he seemed content to let me give it a round.

Hope that explains it! Smile

Hmmm

Well if it received not much interest was there a reason? Seems like maybe people are not interested? Why fast track something that had no interest?

Definitely *some* interest

There's definitely some interest: System Explorer's entry on PortableFreeware.com has a popularity score of 2,696.

Hey no problems

I downloaded and like it myself, just seems odd that it can be "fast tracked" at an authors request. Heck my version of RedNotebook has been vastly popular IMHO but I am sure not "good enough" for anyone else?

Fair comment, but...

That's a fair comment, but IMHO the circumstances are a little different. The author decided to support the PortableApps Format, apparently without prompting, and posted a DT here. It was essentially ignored, so he decided to drop it. It doesn't look like he's given up on PortableApps, though, so we're essentially fast-tracking it as a continuation of his original DT.
Developers who are willing to support PortableApps, IMHO, should get slightly higher priority than "normal" apps, where the base app is non-portable and a PortableApps user portabilizes it. Heck, this is likely to be released before my Iron Portable, which has also been in development for awhile. Wink
I hope there's no hard feelings!

Nice app, though !

But it's missing language switching, to become official I consider this quite an important feature. Maybe spend a day one time to get the hang of PAL's language switching, it's really quite straight forward ! At the moment it's it just switches to the system default language. The setting is,
config.ini:

[user_3957536184]
language=@en

for english, any other language just needs to have the filename, like for dutch=Dutch.ini

I'm not so happy about the user ID numbers, not sure yet how that will behave when switching PC ?

Another thing is that the app asks to set it to run at system-startup, which when enabled will produce:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\SystemExplorerAutoStart: ""D:\PortableApps\SystemExplorerPortable\App\System Explorer\SystemExplorer.exe" /TRAY"

Probably if adding a config.ini to the DefaultData with the right setting would solve this.

Snapshots are being saved automatically as %PAL:AppDir%\System Explorer\snapshots\*.ses, and left there. Not sure if this is prefered, or maybe should go to the Data folder !

Thanks!

PAL's language switching is a pretty tough thing to learn, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. You're right, it seems pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it.
I've added lang switching to the next DT; I'll upload that in just a moment. Please give feedback on that, because it's the area I'm most unsure of.
I've also added a DirectoriesMove command to deal with the snapshots folder; thanks for bringing that to my attention.

With regard to the startup entry, I don't think we need to worry about that. Firefox Portable and Google Chrome Portable don't disable the "Set as default browser" setting; Process Explorer Portable doesn't disable the "Replace Task Manager" setting; I don't think we need to worry about the System Explorer startup entry, either, since it falls in the same category (something the user needs to enable to get working). Thoughts?

EDIT: just realized I forgot to reply to your concern about the user ID. That should move properly from PC to PC, I think; I've also written the language entries to work regardless of the UID. If necessary, I can ask the System Explorer developer to change that UID system, but I think we're OK.

test report

I already found a version similar to this one. It works just fine. the only issue i had was that its not in the official format so i had to adjust the ini files to make it work the way i wanted it to. I shall test this version and compare the 2 and post the results either tomorrow or the following day. Smile

status report

I apologize for the delay of this report. I had a series of unfortunate events transpire that required my full attention. This app works great. I tested it on 2 computers one with xp and the other win7. The app takes up virtually no memory and is simple & straight forward. It runs in the system tray and allows greater control over system events. It a must have for power users and i just love it. That being said there is only one problem. The language switching has a bug in it. It appears that there is some kind of problem where the app can't "see" certain languages or the language files are not compatible. I'm not sure exactly where the problem lies since i'm still learning how to program. all i know how to do is diagnose problems and fix them on a basic level. the problem files are as follows: Belarusian, traditional chinese, japanese, korean, persian, russian,&simple chinese.
All the other languages switch flawlessly. I wish i could offer more guidance, but i'm not a programmer. I'm just a power user. I hope this report helps. Thank you for taking the time to read it. Btw,i love this app!! Biggrin

Thanks for the report!

Don't worry about the delay; I'm grateful you tested it at all.

I was able to reproduce the language bug; it appears to be a problem with System Explorer itself, and the System Explorer entry at PortableFreeware.com gives the probable reason why: "Unicode support: no".
I will contact the System Explorer developer and see about getting this fixed; depending on how System Explorer is written, it could be a big job, so don't expect a fix for awhile.

Thanks for the report!

UPDATE: I got an answer back from the System Explorer developers.

Hi, thanks for report. I tried to switch to simple chinese and the language was changed. Of course, the texts are displayed wrong on my system, because System Explorer is not unicode application. System Explorer should display correct characters, if the system has correctly set the language for nonunicode applications.Control Panel>Regional and Language Options>Administrative > Language for non-Unicode programs.

Does the publisher want to host this directly? If so, I think we can finalize this week.

Not sure, but I'll ask

We never discussed that; we just agreed that I would maintain the package, not who would host it. I'll send them a note and ask.

If the answer is yes, should I have them mirror the latest DT or do you want me to send them something else (e.g. a build with an official splash screen)?

Ah Ok

We can just host it then for now and if they want to take it over, that's cool. Since they didn't ask to host.

We generally don't do splashes for freeware.

They're hosting

The System Explorer dev sent me back a message; he wants to host it, and he can take over maintaining the package as well.

Should I just have him pull the latest DT, or should I update it to "official" status (e.g. remove "Development Test" from appinfo.ini)?

Also, is there anything special I should have him do when he takes over the package, or is he just supposed to post updates in the forum like I've been doing?

Process

Yeah, I'd say remove the splash (it comes up fast and basically has its own startup message), remove the DT from the appinfo.ini, you'll have to up the packageversion to 2.7.3.3471 so the updater will pick this up, remove the installer.ini (no need to ask for languages when they're only 600k).

Once all done, he can post it as final on his website and let us know the address. For future releases, he can just drop us an email to the developers address on the contact page and we'll handle the update. Unless, of course, he wants to do a public beta for any of them and then he can post in the forums as usual. He could also just post the PA.c Format on his own site and let us know via RSS as we can monitor that, too.

Sounds good

I took care of the latest DT as you suggested; I'll go e-mail him the link and your instructions. I don't see a RSS feed on the System Explorer site, so I'm guessing updates will come via e-mail.

Correct

DisplayVersion always matches the App's version that we call it publicly. PackageVersion is used primarily internally by the PA.c Updater.

Late, but yes

I know it's late in the day (sorry, another privs snafu earlier cost me my new "usual" dev machine) but yes. The link I posted earlier ( http://systemexplorer.net/dl/SystemExplorerPortable_2.7.3.3471.paf.exe ) is the one to use.
