Online Installer: This is an online installer that will download additional files during setup.
Release Notes:
2.3.5 Development Test 1 (2010-10-22):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.3.5. What's New in 2.3.5.
- PicPick doesn't seem to create the MSN Toolbar registry entry anymore so code is removed.
2.3.4 Development Test 1 (2010-09-22):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.3.4.
2.3.3 Development Test 1 (2010-07-30):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.3.3.
- PicPick now creates a registry entry (HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MSN\Toolbar) on first run which the launcher will delete on exit.
2.3.2 Development Test 1 (2010-07-15):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.3.2.
2.3.1 Development Test 1 (2010-07-08):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.3.1.
- Added CheckForPlatformSplashDisable (not tested yet).
2.3.0 Development Test 1 (2010-06-04):
- Added new PicPick EULA.
2.2.9 Development Test 2 (2010-05-17):
- Run at startup reg key has been moved from HKLM to HKCU.
- Version checking is now only done in CustomCodePostInstall and on first run. As it should have been initially (not sure what I was thinking there).
- Improved check for GIMP Portable (was writing invalid path if not found).
- NOTE: The per-system INI number issue has been fixed in PicPick 2.2.9.
2.2.9 Development Test 1 (2010-05-14):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.2.9.
- Updated language support in installer and launcher.
- Improved checks for X:\Documents\Pictures and GIMP Portable.
2.2.7 Development Test 1 (2010-04-14):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.2.7.
-
PicPick now generates a random, system-specific number in the INI which will cause the 'Program Options.../About' dialog to appear on first run with all items checked. Just untick them all and exit the dialog. You'll have to do this *every* time you change systems! I would call any attempt to get round this "cracking", so I'm not going to try
:-)
2.2.6 Development Test 2 (2010-04-13):
- PicPick no longer creates a desktop shortcut on first run.
2.2.6 Development Test 1 (2010-04-06):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.2.6.
- Added Slovak & Slovenian language support.
- Added 'donate' link to help file.
- App directory is preserved on upgrade again, app version number is removed from launcher and MD5 is removed from installer. It should now survive a failed download attempt and supports manual install/upgrade.
- Removed the abilty to change the name of the app directory and program executable with the INI.
2.2.4 Development Test 1 (2010-03-22):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.2.4.
2.2.3 Development Test 1 (2010-03-08):
- UserType check wasn't working. Fixed.
- Removed DefaultData. Launcher now writes the files on first run.
2.2.2 Development Test 1 (2010-02-21):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.2.2.
2.2.0 Development Test 1 (2010-01-20):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.2.0.
- PicPick doesn't create 'APPDATA\picpick' anymore. Backup/restore code removed.
- Added Catalan & Persian language support.
- Removed Portugese language support.
- App directory isn't preserved on upgrade anymore, so make a backup first. The downloaded file has changed without re-numbering once already since 2.2.0 so I'm fully expecting it to fail again soon.
2.1.5 Development Test 1 (2009-12-07):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.1.5.
- Creation of 'APPDATA\picpick' still not fixed in app.
- Version number of app written to 'picpick.ini' by launcher again (otherwise language switching fails on first run).
2.1.4 Development Test 1 (2009-11-17):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.1.4.
- According to the changelog, the "Potable version ini problem" (which I'm presuming is the creation of 'APPDATA\picpick') has been fixed. Not here it hasn't. The folder is still being backed up but it isn't being saved back to 'Data\settings' anymore as I can't see that anything ever gets put in there. So you can delete 'Data\settings\picpick', presuming it's empty.
- Fixed bug in $EXISTSFONTCACHE. Gotos were the wrong way round. Sorry about that. You can delete 'username\Local Settings\Application Data\GDIPFONTCACHEV1.DAT' (any local app that needs it will recreate it). Probably.
- Writing the INI string "Language=" has been removed as this was only in to remain compatible with older versions. Language setting is "Language2=" (and has been for a while).
- Added fix for new "Spanish LA" language file name. Which I'm presuming is Spanish International.
- The launcher used to change the version number of the app in 'picpick.ini' but that seems to be being handled automatically now so code is removed.
- 256 icon removed from appicon.ico.
- This one is never an easy upgrade!
2.1.3 Development Test 1 (2009-11-08):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.1.3.
-
PicPick now creates a folder in 'APPDATA'. The launcher backs it up then restores it.
EDIT: Apparently this is a bug in the app which will be fixed in the next release.
2.1.2 Development Test 1 (2009-09-21):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.1.2.
- Fix for file "GDIPFONTCACHEV1.DAT" left over in "Local Settings\Application Data".
2.1 Development Test 1 (2009-09-07):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.1.
- Language switching in the app has changed slightly.
- The launcher now sets the app's version number in "picpick.ini" to ensure language switching is upgraded properly. This means that the launcher is definitely NOT compatible with any other version of the app.
- Tweak to automatic language switching code (not related to the app's language switching).
- MD5 updated in "installer.ini".
- "Category" in "appinfo.ini" is now correct.
2.0.3 Development Test 1 (2009-07-30):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.0.3.
- Download link and MD5 updated.
- Updated "DefaultData\settings\picpick.ini" with new version number (for new installations).
2.0.1 Development Test 1 (2009-07-17):
- PicPick has been updated to 2.0.1.
- Download link and MD5 updated.
- Updated "DefaultData\settings\picpick.ini" with new version number (for new installations).
2.0 Development Test 1 (2009-07-14): Initial release
Launcher Features...
- Paths follow changing drive letter.
- Auto Save directory set to "Documents\Pictures".
- External Program set to "PortableApps\GIMPPortable\GIMPPortable.exe".
- Automatic language switching when used with the PortableApps.com Platform.
- Respects settings of locally installed version ("Run Program at Startup").
- All the usual good stuff...
Install Notes:
You may have PicPick Portable Test 1 already installed.
I advise a clean installation of version 2.0, although a report from horusofoz indicates an upgrade will be successful.

Thanks to Patrick for hosting.
Successfully updated from the previous launcher install on XP SP3 without admin rights. Also managed to download the PicPicker installer through the network proxy.
This really makes a great lightweight companion to Gimp for quick and easy editing like a simple crop. Also is good for doing the little tweaks required for web images. And the colour picker tool again comes in handy for this so... Thanks again = )

I forgot that people might update an existing installation from the previous launcher. Again I will add a note at the top.
Glad it all went according to plan. Though I can't take any credit for it
Just wanted to say thanks again for this. Have you considered upgrading your launcher to a PAF Live installer?
PortableApps.com Advocate
Er... I though it was!?
Actually, I considered 'downgrading' it to a normal launcher as the updates are coming thick and fast with this one and the MD5 check kills it on every new release. I guess that feature is meant for the developer's own releases.
They even changed the filename of the download on 2.0.2, which blew it completely out of the water although it's back to the original now (??)
Is it not downloading for you? I'll check it and update to 2.0.3.
Sorry your right it is a live downloader/installer. I can't believe I got that wrong. However it isn't updating
PortableApps.com Advocate
There you go. Try that one... check with a fresh install maybe? It's that pesky MD5 again
Still considering a downgrade though... especially if these are now aimed more at the app's original devs so they can pack their pafs
See release notes for changes.
Successfully updated over the previous install = )
PortableApps.com Advocate
Marvellous!
Isn't this app portable already? What's different from what you have here and the one from the developer's website??? I've read above but I guess I don't get it
Works with XP SP3
PortableApps.com Advocate
Extremely useful app. Thanks!
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
Hey Prapper
I remember you saying that you appreciate being told when an app has been updated and considering how many you are currently developing I thought I'd chip in to let you know PicPick 2.1 has been released. A few things have been changed so I haven't attempted to do a direct update just in case. Change log below.
* Fully Supported on Windows 7
* New PicPick Editor it has a Ribbon Interface like Windows 7 Paint
* Added a pixel-ruler in an image window
* Fixed: Added default file name in Save dialog
* Fixed: 'Check for program update' bugs
* Fixed: 'Capture Fixed Rectangle' Bug
* Many known bugs were fixed.
Thanks for your work mate
PortableApps.com Advocate
Yep, thanks, see above. Or below...

Thanks Prapper

Thanks as always Prapper. I love this tool
PortableApps.com Advocate
Yeah, I like it too. The thing I always miss from GIMP though is the ability to tweak the crop size and position with the mousewheel. So quick and easy. But sometimes GIMP takes too long to load... can't have it all
:-)
Hi prapper
Since I see you actually make your launcher to delete this file, I wonder if you could tell me what this file actually is.
My self, I've seen it around before, and expected it's just some kind of standard windows file. So I didn't bother about it!
Are you saying, you should have your launcher remove this for it to be perfectly portable (not leaving traces)???
Formerly Gringoloco
Windows XP Pro sp3 x32
It won't always be removed. Many apps create/use it so the launcher checks to see if it already exists and, if it does, it's left there on exit. See the GIMP launcher for similar behaviour.
Just noticed that the save directory doesn't seem to carry the drive letter as it has the drive letter that my drive uses at college.
PortableApps.com Advocate
Just did a quick drive switch here and everything is working. I know the 'Save/Save As...' just defaults to the local system and isn't saved by PicPick but you shouldn't be seeing your previous dir. The auto-save dir that you set in the program options is moving correctly here. Any more info you can give me?
It was the drive switch in the auto-save directory that was set to E:\ as opposed to the I was running. It may be fault if I previously directed it that folder. I've changed it to f:\ now. I'll see if it switches to E:\ when I'm using that tomorrow at college.
PortableApps.com Advocate
Let me know how it goes.
Issue was still occurring but then tried a fresh install and there were no paths. Therefore I'm guessing the auto-save function isn't enabled by default and I must have enabled and set the path. This then created absolute paths. Just tried setting with relative paths but PicPick doesn't allow it.
However the functionality isn't essential so all good
PortableApps.com Advocate
I enabled the auto-save directory and set it to X:\Documents\Pictures in the default INI. It should work straight off the bat. Absolute paths are used.
I just tested again, fresh install, run, switch drive, run again, all fine. When you did a reinstall, did you delete the settings directory too? My guess is no and that the default settings weren't copied over.
With PicPick closed, go into App\picpick and make sure there's no 'picpick.ini' there. If it's in both App\picpick and Data\settings it won't get moved and will cause this problem. In Data\settings, open 'picpick.ini' and 'PicPickPortableSettings.ini'. Make sure all paths are set to your current drive. This will reset the drive switching feature and all should be well. Fingers crossed
Did you get this sorted out in the end?
Sorry for the late response. I completely forgot about this. Just checked and it works fine now. Even successfully carried the drive letter for Gimp Portable as the external editor. Tops stuff
PortableApps.com Advocate
Marvellous!
See release notes for changes.
Download link doesn't appear to be working
PortableApps.com Advocate
Yeah, sorry about that (I pulled it temporarily to fix something). Normal service has been resumed (it works now).
Just tried updating and the online installer fails saying "The Installer failed to download Pic Pick 2.1.3...ERROR:Server Error(503)"
PortableApps.com Advocate
Try it again. Looks like a problem at their end. All working fine here now.
All settings maintained over upgrade. Well done Prapper
PortableApps.com Advocate
Just a note to say that the folder 2.1.3 creates in 'APPDATA' is a bug and will be fixed in the next release of the app. The current launcher takes care of it in the meantime.
I was wondering why it was constantly empty

May I ask if anyone else has had problems running this installer? I have tried it several times and had it work successfully once. The times that it failed, I received an error that PicPick could not be downloaded and the other times that I tried, I was told that the PicPick download was not valid. I just wanted to check on this to see if I was the only one experiencing this problem.
Where are you trying to download from? If work or school then it may be there proxy or network settings that is disturbing the download.
PortableApps.com Advocate
That's the strange part, because it actually completed successfully at work (the second time) but not the first. This is actually when the PA live installer is trying to download PicPick from their web site. Very strange, but as long as it is just me, I'll see what I can figure out. It didn't work successfully at home, and as far as I know there are no proxy settings or anything like that on my connection. Thanks for the information.
An idea I got from reading another thread was do you have any download managers installed on your home machine? If so this could be causing a conflict of some kind. If you have one installed disable it and try again.
PortableApps.com Advocate
I checked and I don't have any download managers installed. Also, the online installer has worked with other applications. It's likely that it's something else on my computer. I'll try to test it on another computer in a couple of days just to confirm that. It's kind of strange, but that's the way computers go sometimes. Thanks for all the help.

Hello, I'm PicPick developer.
I saw this installation a few days ago.
As you know, PicPick has contracted with Microsoft for Bing Bar in own installaion package.
So, you are forbidden from repackaging any version of PicPick without permisson from the developer.
(Ex. A portable version of PicPick)
You can use the portable version of PicPick only for private, personal.
I have mentioned above information to PicPick official download page.
Please undersand my situation and stop developing Portable version of PicPick.
It is the prerogative of the original developer to choose how his app is distributed.
However, according to the website, you can extract the single exe from the installer file and it will run as portable.
This is kosher, since you are using the official installer package.
I did this by extracting it with Peazip.
It doesn't seem to make any registry keys, and as prapper mentions, it doesn't put anything in APPDATA.
After you've done this, to quote the website, "You can use the portable version of PicPick only for private, personal and not commercial use."
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
I've emailed the developer and posted on the PicPick Facebook page requeting he reverse his decision on this. I suggest others do likewise so that PicPick Portable can be maintained on PortableApps.com.
PortableApps.com Advocate
Oh.. Many people emailed me after my posting!
As you know, PicPick has been released with portability function from the first version.
It doesn't write any registry key. Also It doesn't copy any files to the system folder.
Actually you can use it without any installation. (without PortableApp installation)
I just such disappointed about repackaging the program without my permission.
Now, I understand many people want to use it your own Portable Apps format.
If you like, do that. I don't lose my program users even though they don't want my installation
Thanks for your attention about my program, and sorry for my poor English.
Have a nice day.
Thanks Wiziple
I appreciate your listening to your users and allowing us to package PicPick Portable.
@Prapper: I guess this means we can now ditch the online installer and include the base files
PortableApps.com Advocate
@Prapper: I guess this means we can now ditch the online installer and include the base files
I'm not sure this is correct. I did not read the creators statement as repackage and redistribute as you like.
As the creator has expressed some concerns I think we should continue with an online installer (i.e. download the original package as it is) until clear, unequivocal, permission is given otherwise) and taking into account language difficulties.
Tim
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
Just so you know, wiziple, prapper has never repackaged PicPick. PicPick Portable has worked by downloading PicPick from your server and extracting it.
If you liked, you could talk to prapper about it and host it on your own server as an official build of PicPick (we could then certify that it is indeed portable and so on for user confidence in the PortableApps.com Format). You clearly wouldn't be able to redistribute a Bing toolbar though.

Hi. Great app. Thanks for working on making this portable. I just downloaded the 2.2.6 and think I found an issue. Do I report this here or somewhere else?
Fire away.
OK, not that big of a deal but when I first started the portable application version, It created a shortcut to the application on my desktop. No big deal for me but I know some folks don't like that.
BTW,
What's the status on this app in terms of moving it forward from testing to release and included with the suite?
Thanks again!
n8
I wasn't expecting that! Looks like this only happens on a fresh install and not an upgrade. I obviously only tested this as an upgrade. Sorry about that, my fault.
Anyway, if you right-click the tray icon, go into Program Options/About and un-tick "Create a desktop icon" it'll get deleted and won't reappear at the next launch. Maybe you worked that out already.
I'm a bit puzzled at the moment about how this setting is stored though. Thanks for letting me know about it, I'll investigate further and see if I can fix it. I just tested it now swapping drives and it didn't reappear, I'll check it on another system tomorrow.
I don't know about the status of the app but things like this won't help it on it's way.
No problem. I already saw where you could select the option. Thanks for the work.
BTW, if you need testers for this, I use it all the time so just let me know what/how you want this tested and I can lend a hand.

All offers of testing are accepted
Nothing specific at the moment except to make sure that this is all working now with either a clean install or an upgrade. I inadvertently caused this in the previous release by removing the app version from the launcher in an attempt to make it more generic. That'll teach me, trying to be clever. Actually, it probably won't...
Anyway, apologies all round and thanks for the report (they're always welcome). Should be fixed now.

Any idea why the random number was incorporated?

But I wouldn't want to elaborate here
Any clues to why???
Any news from Wiziple about supporting PicPick Portable?

I had ago on this, hoping to find a nice solution for the current issue. But currently I couldn't. Got close thought, by 'SendMessage' to the specific dialog options. But anyway if this could be fixed on a reasonable way, they would probably find an even more horrible way to de-portabalize PicPickPortable.
Anyway, I found a problem, on my side (Windows XP sp3) it saves the 'Run Program at Startup' option in:
But in you code you are backing-up / deleting:
BTW: Did anyone ever explain wiziple clearly, that you are NOT, quote:

But it used to be HKLM! That one slipped past me, thanks for pointing it out DT2 tomorrow...
The 'compulsory' dialog has been fixed now in PicPick and everything is working smoothly... for the moment

Hi. Thanks for updating this again!
I'm running it now. No problems with the app yet but looking at the registry I found this after closing it out (Using Windows 7 32-bit)

2.3.1 Development Test 1
PicPick Portable development has been in progress for quite some time (2 days short of a year at time of this post) and the project is fairly mature. There have been some bumps along the road but all issues have been resolved.
So... John/Release Team - How about a pre-release
PortableApps.com Advocate
Seems that the downloaded file does not fit the installers expectations anymore.
I get an error with the downloaded file. Maybe it's because 2.3.2 is out since today.
Is ist possible to add a version check to make the installer useful past future updates? I could not find any outdated versions on PicPick's homepage, so direct linking to a specific version seems impossible so far.
Apart from that, PicPick works like a charm (until updated). Thanks

I'm about to test this now, seems to me a good candidate for going to Pre-Release.
I wonder, am I allowed to use it in Wine?

Don't want to be picky, but...
Is it possible to add a version check *before* upgrading an existent install? Maybe it's a general problem with the PA installer, but it adds some risk in upgrading an app as it gets first deleted before the installer realizes that it is unable to complete an installation => app destroyed. I don't know if it may occur with other apps too, since I only encountered it with PicPick.
bye, dj
consider it a stupid question, if I missed an eralier given answer...;)

I have never had any version of this work.
I really want it to, but every install has errors.
I am thinking that it is not working now because the latest version is 2.3.5
and this needs version 2.3.4
I don't see the install notes that were here before. Perhaps we don't need them now?
