PortableApps.com Platform 2.0 (codename: Leo) Beta 5 has just been posted for testers and translators. This latest beta represents a large behind-the-scenes effort to upgrade many of the underpinnings of the PortableApps.com Platform on the road to 2.0. The main purpose of Beta 5 was to upgrade the codebase to the latest version of our development environment, make the switch from ANSI to Unicode, add the first public release of the PortableApps.com Updater and do the first public testing of our new theming engine.
Get screenshots and more details in the release announcement on the homepage!
What's New In 2.0 Beta 5
- PortableApps.com Updater - The updater let's you keep all your apps and the platform updated with just a few clicks. It'll even download the right language version of the app based on the language your platform is set to. Just click Manage Apps - Check For Updates!
- New Theming Engine - Over 32 themes are included showing off our new colormix technology and the ability to combine images and chrome. More details on the new theming format will be debuting next week so themers can start making their own packaged themes.
- Unicode Support - Full unicode support means that you can use the platform in the language of your choice even on a PC set to another language. It also allows us to support Vietnamese, Serbian and other upcoming languages that require Unicode for full functionality.

The Road To 2.0
From this point forward, we'll be releasing a new beta every week or two until we hit 2.0 final. Upcoming features include those we announced in the 2.0 Preview including the full theme switcher, improved options screen, file associations, full category/folder support with smart app organization and lots more. Once you're on 2.0 Beta 5, you can just check for new versions and you'll know as soon as Beta 6 is available for you.
Well, that's it for now. Don't forget to check the news story for all the pretty screenshots and more details. And if you're enjoying the new features and want to help things along, please make a donation to support development and hosting.
Known Issues
- Theme Not Selected - The theme you selected is remembered between sessions but will not always be selected in the menu when you restart the platform.
- Some Installers Not Automated - Some installers haven't been updated to the latest release and will still display when used with the updater.
- Updater Steals Focus - When some apps are updated using an online installer, the current app you are using may lose focus for a second or two. This is due to an issue in the inetc plugin and is being investigated.
- Win7 Taskbar Partial Disabling - The advanced feature to disable the Win7 taskbar icon only partially works. When the menu is visible, the taskbar icon will be visible.
- Incomplete Translations - Many translations are lacking some of the new wording. We will be addressing this over the coming weeks and probably do our big translation push after Beta 6.
- Multiple Updater Instances - The updater can be relaunched while it is running, which will affect the in-progress update.
- Highlight Remains on Refresh - When you select to refresh (possibly other functions), the highlight remains over the app or folder while the app list is rebuilt.
- Pink Corners On Non-Aero Windows - The themes will have pink corners on Windows when aero isn't enabled (Vista/7) as well as on 2000/XP. We're investigating this issue.
- Updater Wrong Header - The updater shows the wrong header text while apps are being downloaded and installed. ("Please wait while PortableApps.com Updater is being installed.")
- Updater IE Cache - The updater may leave app installers behind in the IE cache directory (Temporary Internet Files, typically) due to the way the download component works. This will be fixed in the next release.
- PortableApps Folder Icon Missing - The icon for the PortableApps folder is missing from the current platform.
- Updater Show Details - The show details button in the updater is non-functional. This button will be removed in final.
- Language Switching Disabled = English Updater - If you've manually disabled automatic language switching for apps in the platform, the updater will appear in English and will download English packages of apps that have multiple language packs available (Firefox, etc). This will be fixed in the next beta.
- Old Themes Unsupported - Most existing themes will not display properly in the updated beta. The new theming spec isn't quite complete but will be in the coming weeks. We will probably be adding some sort of backward compatibility mode that should enable many existing themes to work.
- FIXED: Multiple Themes Selected - An initial release posted to SourceForge before the announcement had an issue where multiple themes could be selected. Clear your browser's cache and redownload if you have this issue.
- FIXED: Updater Completes Before App Installers - An initial release posted to SourceForge before the announcement had an issue the updater would exit before all the app installers completed. Clear your browser's cache and redownload if you have this issue.
Can't wait to put this to the test! (Especially the updater)
Thanks for all your work on this John!
Thanks Guys for the hard work!!!
you guys are the best. keep up the good work.
Beta 5 downloaded and installed without issue. Working fine so far, though I haven't explored any of the new features yet (other than trying the update check which - not surprisingly - told me that all of my apps were up-to-date).
I think this has been wished for before, but I'd like to flag it here:
Looking at the folder icons at the right of the main menu window, I NEVER use "Music", "Pictures" or "Videos". To reduce clutter it would be great if I could simply hide these.
I imagine some folks would like the option to substitute links to different folders though personally I'm not that interested in doing that. For me a link to the drive root directory is all that's really needed - the link to documents is a luxury that's nice, though not essential.
Regards
Nick
You'll be able to customize them in an upcoming beta but probably not hide them. You'd wind up with blank spots on the menu which would look a tad odd.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Customise would be OK, though I'd prefer to be able to hide them.
I would expect that those who prefer the customisation thing would want to have a variable number of folders there so it might be worth looking at that as a possibility - with the space closing up if less than the maximum available number of folders was used. That amounts to much the same thing as hide, of course.
Regards
Nick
Thank you for the great work!
i love the updater feature, and it works perfect (on all 3 usb-drives that i use)! it's much better than the old updater application, that you launched one or two years ago...
thank you john and all your helpers!

i think i have to re-activate my paypal account for a donation!
...like this one. I noticed that old version is currently in use.
I use more PA then regular one even on my personal PC ;). Thanks for great work to all involved. And also thanks for all supporters in any way.
Take care,
Filip.
We missed that one, but I've got it on the list for Beta 6 so it'll be in there. Thanks!
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
It's possible to start a second instance of the updater which overwrites the selected updates to all.
I selected just one app to update to try it out. While it was running I clicked on Manage Apps-Check For Updates just to see what happened and another instance of the updater ran. The first instance then continued to update 2 of 1, 3 of 1, 4 of 1 etc. and I cancelling didn't seem to take effect for a while.
The check will be added in Beta 6.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Thanks for the updated beta.
After upgrading from Beta 4 to 5 on Win XP Home 32bit:
1. The platform now appears in the taskbar when maximised.
2. Updater keeps wanting to update WinMD5sum even though it's already been updated.
3. Help > Update states version 1.6.1 in the URL.
4. When different themes are selected, they stay selected forever even when i change the theme.
5. Manage Apps > Refresh App Icons. The current highlighted app under the mouse stays highlighted while the progress bar does it's thing.
1. Known issue, see original post
2. Fixed
3. By design (it only shows the current stable and will be removed from later betas)
4. Huh? Do you mean the other known issue mentioned in the main post?
5. Can't reproduce. Not quite sure what you mean.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
1. The only reference I can find to this relates to Windows 7 but the poster is using XP. Actually, in W7 when the menu is open I don't think it matters if the icon appears on the taskbar - the important thing is to hide it when the menu is not open.
4. Don't know if this is related, but I was using the Windows7.patheme from Beta 4 and then experimented with some of the new themes. I had selected a "dark" theme then went back to the Windows7 one. It took on the "dark" properties and there was no obvious way to change this other than to select one of the standard non-dark themes then go back to the Windows7 one again.

Nick
1. Ok cheers.
2. Cool.
3. Ok.
4. I had early version from source forge. Latest has fixed it.
5. Doesn't matter, not really important.

I am really thankfull for the updater

I see it
All of my apps are up to date now, the updater suits my lazyness

BTW, the refresh thing also happens when you show hidden apps, but I suppose that is because it is refreshing...

The PortableApps folder in the root of the drive doesn't have an icon. The Desktop.ini referrs to portableapps.ico which doesnt exist in .\PortableApps.com\App\DefaultData\FolderIcons\.

Updating VLC, clicked on Show details, its window showed, just one line displayed, nothing else showed for the many seconds it took VLC to be installed. Oh, and the Cancel button was greyed out for the whole time. Could hear the HD clicking away but had no idea what was going on - I guess this is another bug as it is not possible at the moment to cancell a long download/install.
BTW, forgot to say on last bug report - a big big thank you for releasing the updater, it's going to make my life so much easier supporting friends and family that I have converted to the PortableApps way!
I see that in the Known Issues the following has been added: "Updater Show Details - The show details button in the updater is non-functional. This button will be removed in final."
Does this mean we will not be able to see what's happening? (Useful when things go wrong)
The Progress bar is fixed at the moment, but not available yet. So, in the next beta release you will be able to see the progress bar increase while installing as well.
All the md5's are checked by the updater, so I don't think anything is able to go wrong without the updater telling you.

There's really not much to show since, from the updater's perspective, all it does is download, compare md5, run installer.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
So we can't see all the individual file actions by the installer as we used to be able to?
Not unless you set the updater to show each installer (which will be an advanced option once the new Options window is complete). It will then show each individual installer and you can select to Show Details on each one if you want.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Could get the installers to make a log file when run from the updater and get the updater to show that in the log. Not quite instant, but will give the details wanted by some users.
Or an even better idea, make a plugin that will send the log to the updater as it is written. Would require 2 parts though: server-type plugin for the updater and client-type plugin for the installers. Not really necessary though, just an idea.
First off all thanks for the great work. Second (I know it is kind of offtopic here), I would like to make a donation, however I do not have creditcard (nor do I want one). I did open a paypal account last weekend for the second time and canceled it again (takes days before I can actually use it). So I used ClickandBuy. Is it possible to pay that way in the future?
Hi from a VERY new 'PortableApps' user (less than 24hrs)and so far the 'portable' approach could be what I am looking for (how to have data / apps AND SYNCHRONISED wherever located but NOT using web based computing - Thinking is to have all key apps / data on key even when working on home office PC). However, just updated from 1.6 (?) to the v2 Beta and first observation is that I preferred the 'old' memory usage display (BUT only in my opinion - this is NOT a negative!)... Otherwise EXCITING times ahead with LOTS to learn! i.e. Wonder how can run programs that are licensed to a specific PC...(?) Anyway, thought I would just drop a note to compliment the development thus far and perhaps using the 'portable' approach will make my life (and others) that much easier iro computing?!?
Remember to KEEP SMILING
Thanks man!
Is it possible to delete the downloaded installers?
I found them in my ie cache (C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files).
EDIT
Oh and maybe you could have the updater splash stay a little longer. It disappears, nothing happens for ~5 seconds and then the window shows.

The corners on the themes are showing as pink and not transparent.
I have tried most of the themes and it is the same on all of the ones I have tried.
Confirmed here with Windows 7 64-bit and 1280 x 800 resolution (if that's of any relevance). Just the top corners, though.
Also, with the dark themes there's a border (1 or 2 pixels wide) round the central window. But it's not white all the way round so it looks odd - like the elements of the window are not lined up correctly, rather than a deliberate border. If it's to stay (and I think it probably should) then it would be better for it to be white.
Did 1.6.1 and 2.0 Beta 4 have this issue on this specific PC or no?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Beta 4 was perfect, no pink corners.
It's just this version.
Which edition of Windows 7? Screen resolution and color depth?
I can't reproduce this on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 at 32-bit color.

I've got it on windows XP, 1280x1024. Using your themes and a different one that worked fine when I first started the menu.
It happens after I've loaded the menu, then changed a theme.

The old themes aren't fully supported yet. You're seeing a combination of chromes.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Can you remind us which are the new themes so we can compare?
All stand-alone themes are no longer supported as they don't match up with the current layout of the menu and may not work with the new chrome/background system. We may work partial backward compatibility into an upcoming release. The theming system isn't finalized but should be in the next week or two at which point we'll advise on theming and updating old themes.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Heh. When I first run the menu it works fine. After I change the theme (supported or not) it does I get the pink.
I know my old theme entirely supported yet, the support button hangs off the end. I'm okay with that. What I'm not okay with and more what I'm trying to point out in a very obvious manner is that the pink chroming that shows up after I change the theme
If you really want, I can screen pic the supported themes and the pink for you.
The key is it shows up after I change the theme.

I've confirmed this as an issue when not running aero in Windows. Essentially it works fine on Vista/Win7 out of the box but not on 2000/XP or Vista/Win7 with aero disabled.
Oddly, it is properly configured to use TransparentColor which is not aero-dependent. This may be due to our colormix theming engine. I will investigate further.

Cool. Thanks for getting that figured out.

When in the downloading phase the Show details button is greyed-out. It would be nice to be able to click on this and be shown the directory to which the download was happening.
I was updating SpyDLLRemover. Got a MessageBox - "Download Error: File Not Found (404) on file http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/SpyDLLRemover_3_2English.p...", then the Updater's main window redrew BUT without the "Installing 1 of 1: SpyDLLRemover..." string being shown.
SpyDLLRemover should now update properly.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
it was that the Updater window was re-drawn without all it's information
Well worth the wait!! Excellent work.
I've only had 2 issues, and neither is a huge deal.
1. Updater worked for 5 other apps, but not for VirtualDub. Gave an error message (sorry, forgot to take a screenshot before manually updating): "please try running the updater again"
2. Odd little purple marks at the corners of the platform interface.

VirtualDub has been fixed.
Did the pink corners show in any older menu versions on this same PC with the same settings?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
This is new.
Nerdy Redneck
John,
I was just about to create a new post about the pink corners when I came across sja5164's post.
I'm having the same issue with the pink but in my experience it is only evident on Windows XP. My Win 7 64bit machine at home showed the corners as fully transparent.
Present here on Windows 7 64-bit but I'm using a non-Aero theme. Switching to an Aero theme I get rounded corners with no pink bits, as expected.
I won't be sticking with the Aero theme, though.
Regards
Nick
I just got home and tried it again on my Win 7 machine. Win 7 64bit, 1280 x 1024 resolution.

Thanks so much for all the hard work. The PortableApps feature I wanted most - automatic updating - is finally up and running. Woohoo! I ran into a problem described above when I tried to update VirtualDub Portable (from version 1.9.8, build 32706), and thought I'd give a bit more detail. The updater gave me a message saying "The downloaded copy of VirtualDub Portable is not valid and can not be installed." Re-running the updater several times didn't fix the problem. I was able to manually download and install the new VDub version easily enough, but I just wanted to point out the problem. Thanks again.
I had the same experience. Manual update worked fine.
I was confronted with the same problem. And also the manual update worked as it should. After that another start of the updater - the same error message as before.
The MD5 sum was incorrect in the updater database. This has been fixed.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
For me this is now working perfectly.
A big thank you, John and all the helping hands, for this marvellous work.
This was a very big step forward for the platform.

Congratulations on the release, finally we have a working updater
Everything seems to be working ok.
Except a small issue where the PortableApps folder in the root of the drive lost it's icon, and the desktop.ini is still there pointing to an icon file which doesn't exist.
I have ConvertAll 0.4.3, and the updater suggested I upgrade to 0.5b. I tried to update it, and the updater gave me a 404 error when it tried to download the update package.
SWAG
This has been fixed in the updater database.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
The option to search for updates is a great feature, but is spoilt but not having any control over where these are downloaded.
I most absolutely DO NOT want downloads going to my C drive, even if only temporarily, as this is an SSD drive and only contains the OS and installed programs.
In any case, it would be polite to ask before downloading. I have a drive set aside for all my software - this enables easy location for re-installing, etc.
Oh dear, just had an error pop up while running the updater. Download Error: File Not Found (404) on file ..... etc. In this case it was the Google update file.
Also, why is "Show details" greyed out? If this option is not going to be made available then don't show it at all.
It uses your TEMP directory as that's really what it's for. The online installers all do this as well. You can move your TEMP directory to another path to avoid this.
In an upcoming platform version, you'll be able to have your TEMP file on your same device as the platform and avoid the local PC's TEMP.

I’ve been using PA on my Linux machine via Wine, and it’s been working up till now. Individual apps still work after the upgrade to Beta 5, but the PAP gives me an error when I try to run it.
I’m about to upgrade Wine on my computer & see what that gets me.
Upgraded Wine; still get the same error. I’ll be filing a bug with the Wine folks now.
Could you please tell us what the error is saying? John will probably be able to fix it.
Thanks.

The error message I get reads thus:
I have told Wine to pretend to be Windows XP for PAP; that works for now, but emulating Vista or Windows 7 causes breakage.
ETA: The bug has been reported to Wine’s Bugzilla (link). Seems (from a quick hack someone there tried) that the PAP calls certain API functions (
GetThreadUILanguage()
,GetThreadPreferredUILanguages()
, &SetThreadPreferredUILanguages()
, to be specific) if it detects Vista/Win7, which Wine has not yet implemented. In other words, it’s not John’s fault.

If I were you I would try 'Disable App Language Switching'.

Interesting idea, but no; it still crashes.
It’s pretty definitely a Wine bug, and I have a work-around, so I’m happy.

I love the new updater. Keeping things up to date was aways a chore. In order to save some bandwidth (i.e. installing on a coworkers stick), is there or could there be an option to tell PA Updater to save the most up to date downloaded installs to a folder?
We may be able to in a later version in conjunction with defining a TEMP directory.

This does not seem to be right, there is a taskbar object when the platform is open.

this is in Vista. I've seen someone post about XP but not about Vista.

Is the options window in beta 6 coming?
This is a bug in the installer, the menu is refreshed after an app is updated. Since it's only an update, nothing changes, so the platform should not be refreshed.
This bug becomes gets to its peak of annoying when updating about 10 apps and it continuously auto refreshes on you during use.
Apps change versions between each update. Sometimes even change icons. So it should update. The update time will be much less shortly, though.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
"Please wait while PortableApps.com Updater is being installed" perhaps should say "Please wait while the PortableApps.com Platform updates the following applications" or something to that effect. This is on the "header" to the left of the PA.c flash drive/shadow graphic on the updater, while updates are downloading. (To be fair, the screenshot on the site shows this.)
Portable Firefox 3.6.6 is prompted to be updated to Firefox 3.6.6 though I may have allowed Firefox to update itself rather than using the PA.c installer for 3.6.6. (Also, the update checker in Firefox *really should* be disabled by default, or at least, if the user has disabled it, it should stay disabled.)
Updater is not 100% silent, Skype Portable requires acceptance of terms which were previously accepted (when Skype Portable was installed the first time). Never mind if terms have changed.
Updater offers VLC 1.1.0, does not specify Rev 2. Help>About confirms 1.1.0 and font cache doesn't need to be rebuilt. Not really an issue, I suppose, just confusing.
Limited transparency support for app icons in menu. A few have it, but no official PortableApps.com have it. These apps have a black background filling in the 16x16 square. ReNamer, OperaUSB, and a couple other "natively portable" apps have no transparency issues. Seems to be limited to just PAF apps (from PA.c and otherwise). Using one of the "dark" themes makes this look a little better. (I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, 1600x1200, 32-bit color.)
Themes seem to make the PA.c icon look nasty, with horrible blocking around the sphere. (Standard and Dark alike.) Silver and Grey look too similar. Yellow and Green aren't yellow and green. Green is more olive. The shade of green from Beta 4 was perfect. (Opinion: TexturedDark is the best of the lot.)
The PortableApps.com Homepage has July 17th listed as the release date for Beta 5. It's still the 16th.
Now running Beta 5 on my portable hard drive at work, on a Windows XP SP3 box (generic Dell).
The updater works through the system proxy, which is nice, nothing to configure. (I can't get Chrome or Opera to do that!)
The updater no longer offers to update Firefox 3.6.6 to Firefox 3.6.6, which is nice, and VLC 1.1.0 now shows up as Rev 2.
Icon transparency works fine here, and since nobody commented on the issue, I assume nobody else had it? I will have to check my drivers when I get home. Since going to Windows 7, I just let Windows Update take care of my drivers, but I have head that the GeForce drivers differ from Windows Update to the official ones, so maybe an update will sort it. (I have no other graphical issues, however.)
Textured(/Dark) doesn't look as good on this screen as it does at home. I don't know why. Contrast issues here. Using and loving Rainbow Dark. Also, the textured themes don't have the same effect with transparency enabled, even at 10%. This is just an aesthetic issue though. Making the subtle texture bolder might not be such a great idea; I'm not recommending it, just saying.
This is an awesome update... the updater is... the best thing since portable apps. Thank you so much. It was such a hassle having to update them manually one by one. Can't wait to see the finished product. Great work!
