Windows 7 Portable

Thank you for all the great work you do in bringing us portable apps for Windows. I like to use these on my notebook PC knowing that I have one less app using the Windows GFR (God Forsaken Registry).

I have one request. Is it possible to give us a portable version of Windows XP or 7, one that doesn’t use the GFR. Oh wait, I remember now….its called Linux.

Thanks again! Smile

Already Requested

You need to search more carefully, this has already been requested.

Thank you. While I am

Thank you. While I am committed to Windows, perhaps you need a deeper understanding of the architectural design limitations of Windows and advantages of Linux: the Windows Registry. One important Windows limitation not present in Linux, that thankfully Portable Apps overcomes.

Peace Smile

Also

this site deals with programs NOT operating systems. so a request like that for a OS that has a VERY restrictive EULA and liscesne could be easly answered by a simple NO by microsoft.

Because this site doesnt develop Operating systems asking that sort of linux question is... well this is the wrong place to ask it. also i dont understand your question about linux as you did not convey it clearly to me. I would recomend going to a linux board to ask about portable linux distrobutions and go to a microsoft board to ask for a portable Win7 in which you will get a response similar or along the lines of "Get a laptop with Windows 7!"

Registry isn't a requirement

The limitations of the Windows Registry is not a requirement by Windows. It's there as a convenience for software authors, which it was about 15 years ago. Now it's pretty much irrelevant. Apps were portable before Windows 95 and PortableApps.com just uses a special launcher to make non-portable apps portable again. It's pretty special now, but if you were into computers before Windows 95, it's a little underwhelming. Not the work JTH and others do here, but the overall impact of de-portablizing apps over the years.

Ironically, I do have some closed-source, heavily DRM'd apps and files that I use portably. I've converted my 8GB Corsair Flash Voyager to an Xbox memory card, and it contains my profile, a few dozen Rockband songs, and a few games. And they work on any Xbox 360 I can sign into Xbox Live on (so it has to be online). Not quite the same as PortableApps, but just as cool for the same reason.

Thanks for coming to my rescue!

John, Thank you for coming to my rescue!

I was merely trying to make fun of the Windows registry, without which there just might be less of a need for portable apps.

Thanks again!

*sigh*

Yep, this type of humor is often misunderstood - because we actually have SO many people that REALLY ask for these types of requests!
It's sort of worn out the patience and discernment of the posters here that want to help, but are so tired of denying unreasonable requests to the clueless that they miss the rare attempts at mirth.

Maybe it's time to just ignore all the people that seriously ask for Portable W7, Portable Photoshop, Portable Adobe Premiere, Portable MS Office...

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Hee, hee :-) BUT there ARE uses …

Just strolling around in this forum a little … and had a good laugh.

Nevertheless, there are actually uses for things like a … well … portable Win7 … or better: portable (k)ubuntu 10.04! I tend to use those for demonstration purposes (and to make screencasts that can contain the installation stage).

How? Oh, easy. Using a 500 GB external USB drive as my »USB stick« and Portable Apps. And, admittedly, I use a portable version of VirtualBox to handle the virtual machines on my USB drive. So »Portable Win7«, »Portable Win XP« and »Portable Linux« all no problem. Except for the cost of the the Windows licenses, of course. Fortunately, I’m allowed to use System Builder editions, saves a little at least.

Portable anything. Hee, hee. Smile

Don't Shoot the Messenger

In case anybody missed it, I realized this was a joke the second I saw it, which is why I posted a link (second link) to a similar "joke thread". It just so happened that Mir posted a psuedo-serious comment at the same time, which made mine all the more subtle. Like I said, I'll try something more obvious next time like toilet humor. Keep up the good work PottyApps.com!

Here is something you may find useful!

Try this program called PortableOSLauncher which can be found here: https://portableapps.com/node/21307
