Works on XP Pro SP3 with admin rights. I think FreeCiv would be a lot nicer if they incorporated some of the ambient sounds from this game. Thanks for developing this portable version.

Thanks for the feedback and testing! That Regshot confirmed that it is truly portable.
Right now, I suspect everything works except language switching, which is a conundrum in itself. Of course, I still need testing to make sure that everything works, so please test!

I have posted Development Test 3, see the changelog and download above.
Also, I have made a public repository for all releases, located on Mediafire:

I have posted Development Test 4. See the changelog and download above.
As soon as I figure out how, I will nominate this for Pre-Release testing, as I believe it is ready.
Also, to those of you who have downloaded and have not posted in this thread (there are a good bit of you), please post! I don't want to post this as a Pre-Release and find out that some major bug exists which I didn't know about. Thanks in advance.

I have finished the custom code for handling xml settings files
See: PalCustomCodes & other usefull stuff
But, I think the way you got language switching set-up now, is kind of good enough !
Maybe you could still implement:
Note, that I haven't tested the above settings in anyway, but it should be roughly what you need!
Btw: Your link for the current DT is death, quote:

I fixed the link.
Development Test 5 is coming, with a switch to using the option file for language switching.

I have posted Development Test 5. See the changelog and download above.
At this point, I believe FreeCol is bug-free. I will recommend it to the release team for Pre-Release in 1 week, if there are no bugs or suggestions.
Thanks to all of those who have downloaded and tested FreeCol Portable!

OP needs to be edited as the release notes for DT5 are labelled as DT4.

Oops, looks like the entire post got screwed up in the edit.
OP changed back to Development Test format and Release Notes fixed.

Doesn't an app have to go through the test phase? I mean it is not totally listed as a test app yet? Pre-release so soon? Especially when there are so many apps that were in test log before this one?

Optimistic and planning on posting the dev test to the Apps Ready For Official Release, Post Here thread.
Good luck

You could say that I'm optimistic. However, I think that this is ready, and the fact that nobody's reported any bugs makes it better.
I won't lie: this application was pretty portable to begin with. All I did was adjust it to PortableApps.com Format and implement language switching.
If you don't think it's ready, download it and prove me wrong.

When I said Good Luck I meant it in the proper sense.
I want more games in the PortableApps.com Format and have for some time. In fact what originally brought me to PA over 2 years ago was games.
Naturally I have a much broader appreciation of the platform now but still have a soft spot for games in PAF. It is my belief that portable games are a good entry point for a broader group of users. As it was for me.
Anyway the point is when I said you were being optimistic there was no slight implied. I meant you were being positive about the application's chances for progression and wished you well for it. Hence the
Now on a more relevant note, successfully updated to DT5 on XP Pro SP3 with admin rights. Game starts without issue.

I understood what you meant. I didn't mean to sound combatative or anything, but I'd rather have people try to find bugs. Even if it makes me look bad.
Again, I apologize if I didn't come off very well in my response, but all I'm trying to say is that I am a little bit optimistic, and that through my tests everything is portable. If you want to challenge me and make me happy, test it. Find a bug, and I'll give you a cookie.
Oh yes, and thanks for being the first tester. It really is helpful.

Was give it time, I have many apps some over 4 months old, with a total of over 1400 downloads on one. The only complaint was not 2k compatible, I am even in daily contact with the development team of the app. That being said your app has been posted 12 days and it is already ready for pre-release. Me thinks optimism is great but you may want to take it out of fifth gear and coast with it for a while.

I understand. I realize that I shouldn't rush this app off, but I seem a bit too encouraged that my development tests have 100+ downloads with no bugs reported.
Per your suggestion I'll wait a little bit longer, perhaps 2 weeks until recommendation. However, another reason that is why I'm rushing this is because I'll get busy sometime soon, and when that happens this may fall through the cracks.
Again, I apologize if I came off too hard.

Hi, ...
Your portable software, dont work inside my user name.
In clear = i have the user name = Sylvain St-Amand
But when i place your portable package, on the desktop directory, it show an error. Data directory cant be found, inside St-Amand
That error message display only, St-Amand, not Sylvain St-Amand
Please verifiy at your side, ...
So you installed it on your desktop, which has a path similar to "C:\Users\Sylvain St-Amand\Desktop"?
Probably malfunctioning due to the path. Will you test an updated release that I post tomorrow to see whether that fixes the problem?

Hi, ...
I try the = v. 0.9.3 Development Test 5 , 2010-July-15
(thesupremecommander)So you installed it on your desktop, which has a path similar to "C:\Users\Sylvain St-Amand\Desktop"?
Respond = Yes, the portable package create the directory = C:\Users\Sylvain St-Amand\Desktop\FreeColPortable
Error message = could not find the main class St-Amand\Desktop\FreeColPortableData Program will exit.
I also try on others directorys and it work. (Like "C:\portable\" "E:\")
P.s. others portable apps software, work correctly on the "C:\Users\Sylvain St-Amand\Desktop".
Looks to me like you're missing quotes somewhere in your CommandLineArguments which should be there (read that bit of the manual again, quotes are mentioned quite strongly due to mistakes like this).

As soon as I read his post I realized that -Duser.home was not enclosed in quotes. Development Test 6 is coming fixing that and a non-updated launcher source. Stay tuned.

I have posted 0.9.4 Development Test 1. See the changelog and download above.
Also, FreeCol Portable needs new testers... If you're interested in making this an official release, please download and test it! It doesn't matter how much you test it (from casually playing to testing every feature), only that you post the results here.
Happy testing!

Can't even get it to run.
The first time I click on the entry in the pApps menu FreeColPortable.exe starts, I get the splash screen, then FreeColPortable.exe stops a second or two later. Nothing else.
The second time I try to run it, FreeColPortable.exe starts, I get the splash screen, javaw.exe starts, then nothing.
Have even re-downloaded and re-installed, and still the same thing....
I'm on XP SP3, with full admin rights.
Might be another path error in the launcher.
Anyway, since I've been gone so long, I'll be rolling out 0.9.5 once I'm finished hopefully with a fix to your issue.

The Square center SplashScreen dont display a graphics. = Only a background colors.
I have Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Java x64 and x86 installed.
When it display the Square in the center of the screen, that must contain the SplashScreen, but in real it contain a background color, after i have to click on that square in the center of the screen, to see the main menu and play the game.
