No more apps.
At the moment, I'm currently drowning in school stuff. I can't do squat for the moment. You can ask if you want, but be warned: I might not come out with anything new for a long time (at least a month and a half).
What this is about
I'm out of apps I was going to make portable. I see a bunch of apps in the Request Apps but none of them appeal to me, so I figured I'd ask for apps to ask for, if you know what I mean.
I've searched through PortableFreeware.com, Pendriveapps.com and a few other places, but none of the apps have caught my eye. (that's why I haven't been releasing much lately)
What I want is a useful app, not one like a clock or something, but an app that can be used every day or at least one a week that serves a purpose. A game would work too. I'd like the app to be less than 100 MB and being popular is a plus.
If you know of a website that makes a lot of applications (like IObit) I could think about doing all their apps.
So please... Portable Application development is my drug. If I don't develop something soon, I could... I don't even want to think about it.
And neither should you.
My Apps
If you want to keep track of new development tests (I post in a furry), just follow this link.
Thanks everyone!

Another useful thing you could do would be performing thorough tests on apps that you'd like to see released and make a list of them and give it to us. At the moment I think testing is probably more helpful than developing more new apps - aside from studying for my exams that I'm about to start, I'm trying to do lots of testing.

Use that PAF development juice to get some apps currently in testing along the way to pre-release and official status.
PortableApps.com Advocate
Agreed, why not help get the gazillions of apps waiting to be released one step closer.
What the status of NetPanzer? Needs more user testing?
for every app somebody requests, I'll test two apps and post feedback on them. How does that sound?
If you're looking for a real challenge then get the "weird app" Oolite working!
just want to continue my 1-release-per-week goal (I'm already 3 weeks behind!). And the only way I could think of making Oolite to work is by making it into a single EXE and then writing a launcher. I'm not sure how it would save data though.
Nice easy one for you. I believe it's inherently portable and stores settings in greenpad.ini
Application: GreenPad
Use: Very lightweight text editor/notepad replacement with user-definable Syntax highlighting, line-numbering, recognizes Windows, Linux and Mac text files, and other standard text editor features like search and replace etc.
License: Not sure exactly, the included readme says this:
So it seems like you can redistribute okay without any issues.
The only downside is that it is no longer in active development, but it is fully functional and I have been using it frequently for the past couple of years without any issues.
There are much better options. Greenpad has been dead for 2 years and isn't under a traditional open source license (nor can it be converted to one due to restrictions in this license). We have Notepad++, gVim and Geany (posting today) already, so do we really need a text editor which doesn't seem to offer anything over those 3 and is abandoned?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
or at least that's what my intention until I read John's post...
Next?
Here's a list of what IMO are some of the top development tests that need testing.
In addition to this try porting DVDFlick and/or Media Info.
PortableApps.com Advocate
I'll do Media Info, pass on DVD Flick, and start on VirtuaWin.
I took a regshot... It was discouraging:
http://pastebin.com/DGVaKRNU
I guess I might do DVDFlick instead...
I want to see DVDFlick portable...

http://avast.com free
zonealarm free (I don't think I've seen any portable firewall. Reasons why?)
thanks
I'll take a look at the following (in no particular order):
True Burner
MPC-HC
Freecorder
MiPony
BurnAware is already in the beta forums.
I'll pass on MediaPortal. Boxee looks like its a bit complicated, but I'll think about it.
You say StreamTransport has downloading problems, so I'll wait for them to fix that before looking at it.
jDownloader doesn't like to move from one pc to another (I looked at it a little while ago).
I don't think I can do Avast due to licensing issues. The same goes for zonealarm.
If you're going to look at MPC-HC you might want to figure out what's going on with this portable version first.
MediaPortal is .Net and heavily system dependent AFAIK so a portable version seems a little pointless. You'd be better off with a Mythbuntu LiveCD. j/k

ok, thanks for telling me. I guess I'll hold off of that for now.
I'm not saying don't do it, just that it looks dead, it's very out-of-date. Of course, I know developers try not to step on each others' toes around here, which is fair enough.
how come you wont do dvd flick?
Its freeware.
I tried extracting the installer... no go.
I requested permission from the developers to redistribute it... we'll see how it goes.
looked at it, made it portable, tested it... ready to go (release coming on Sunday)
If you portabilize (in paf) SOFA Statistics I will be your #1 fan forever...
www.sofastatistics.com and it is open source and free, of course, there are versions for windows, mac and Ubuntu/Mint.
I requested it some weeks ago but nobody answer to do it and I don't want to pull the thread to the top again.

Thanks in advance

arghh! Too many installers in one installer! I have a newer version of python installed on my machine, but I need to have an older version of it to work?! There is a crapload of stuff I have to deal with (and its probably going to be the most difficult on the list) including environmental variables and redirects and a lot of other stuff. And it will be very difficult to do updates.
And it took me like 3 minutes alone to find out how to start it! (start.pyc)
But your going to become my biggest fan... so I'll do it. But even if I started today, it wouldn't be done for quite a while.
I'll see how it goes.
I'm happy for the news... and SOFA just added the launchpad system so I'm going to cooperate as a translator...
Thank you again

*EDIT*
i went hunting for something eles and came across SuperTux as well...
[Link fixed - mod Chris]
I think there were portable versions of both of these floating around somewhere on the forums. Unfortunately, it seems that people develop many apps, but for whatever reasons they fall by the wayside. It's a shame but then I/we can't really complain as many people are dedicated a lot of their free time to this project without much in the way of reward other than a hearty congrats and a pat on the back (John included).
Scorched3D is fun, would like to see a portable version of that. SuperTux isn't too bad either, I'm just not a huge fan of SuperMario type games.
I am working on Scorched 3D and will be posting it soon. SuperTux looks funny!
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
I'll get back to you on it.
EDIT:
Ok, I looked at SuperTux. Its really quite fun. And it was easy to make portable. I'll post it on Sunday.
This pdf reader allows you to edit pdf files which makes it allot easier filling out pages
From their website, it looks like it installs as a printer. That has historically been a killer for making apps portable.
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
I think solanus is right
sorry about that poo
As you may have noticed, I just released SuperTux and MiPony Portable (I added it to the OP).
SOFA statistics: not working. I installed it (multiple times) and I tried running it, but it will not start. I think my machine may be a tad bit too old for SOFA, and since I make all my portable apps on my laptop, I don't think I'll be able to make it portable. Sorry bub (BTW, after everything, app and dependencies, is installed, it takes up 222 MB)
Freecorder: I think I can do it... but there is one slight problem. In testing, I couldn't get FCVideo.exe to start. I don't know why, but each time I try, even with FLVServ.exe running, it just won't start. FCAudio works fine, as well as everything else. I'll look into the matter more.
True Burner: Still no reply.
I know this is completely unhelpful and irrelevant but whenever I see "MiPony" I immediately think "Mi Little Pony" ("MiLilPony" if you prefer). The thought of My Little Pony™ Portable amuses me.
Haven't had chance to install and play with it yet but thanks either way!
Freecorder (FCTB), you are right that FLVSrvc.exe (C:\Program Files\Freecorder\FLVSrvc.exe hope i'm giving the right path,Vista) process must be running/launched 1st to use Freecorder. So far I am only using the the FCVideos.exe component (C:\Program Files\Freecorder\FCVideos.exe) and it gets launched after FLVSrvc.exe . In other words, haven't play with recording web audio. As I talked about here https://portableapps.com/node/22988#comment-146707 , I accidently discovered by launching said 2 exe's in said order instead of using the Firefox and IE toolbars method, I can also record/DL videos using Apple Safari and Google Chrome browsers too! In fact, I think I disabled the Fx toolbar...think it's a Fx extension .xpi . (I don't know how to disable the Internet Explorer toolbar version--but I hardly use IE anyway)
Hope this helps in advancing u forward in getting FCVideos.exe to work. Sometimes, I find it hiccups giving me error message so what I do is end FLVSrvc.exe process then relaunch it again, then relaunch FCVideos.exe (If u have to uninstall FCTB, u must make sure FLVSrvc.exe is killed 1st...this also ensures any FCTB subsequent reinstall is proper)
Did u download version 4.02 ? So u said conversion is working for u portableapp-wise? Just not yet FCVideos.exe portableapp-wise?
U think u will be able to do the others I suggested? Like StreamTransport? It's the only app I know that let u DL Hulu. New versions used to come out frequently as u can see here http://rtmpe.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=19 but current/latest version was August 2 so it seems to me maybe ceased development (??) but u can see how useful this app is. Except current/latest have all sorts of DLing problems. So it would be great if u could portabilize version before last: http://download3.videohelp.com/streamtransport_setup_1022041.exe (REF http://rtmpe.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=203 )
http://hulu.com/labs/hulu-desktop (Launcher)???
Boxee? MPC-HC ?
Again, thanks for MiPony.
Yeah, the problem is only with FCVideo.exe.
StreamTransport looks to be a bit buggy and I don't want to release an older version.
Boxee is a dream because it requires external hardware to be useful and that would make it harder on me for testing because I wouldn't have everything I need (I don't want to spend $200 on something I will use maybe twice). Since it kinda requires payment, I don't know if I can distribute it on PortableApps.com.
I'll look at Hulu.
MPC-HC (as Darkbee already said) is a .net app and might not work on many computers.
No no, I said MediaPortal is .Net. MPC-HT isn't .Net that I know of and it's already inherently portable. Sorry, my other post may have been a little confusing since I bundled two separate topics together.
Media Player Classic: Home Theater seems to be roughly equivalent to SMPlayer (in terms of size and features), and so serves as a good alternative to the potentially bloated VLC (which is my only criticism of the otherwise excellent VLC).
VLC Portable is 24MB installed (or 42MB with all the localizations). SMPlayer Portable is 17MB installed (22MB with localizations) but you need to add on the plugins (another 22MB) for it to support all the formats that people want as VLC does. So, VLC is 22-42MB installed and SMPlayer is 39-44MB installed. MPC-HT is 30MB installed. So, realistically, they're all about the same size-wise, though VLC Portable English-Only is the smallest install.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Hi, do you know CCCP?
http://www.cccp-project.net/
I'm not sure it's free software, but it's pretty small and has a lot of codecs. (includes media player classic)
Also i would like something for hardware detection, like SIW: http://www.gtopala.com/
But same problem, i don't know what a kind of licence it requires...
I think I remember reading somewhere that gtopala made (is making, stopped making?) a portable, PAF version of SIW. I'm not sure as to the progress of it. I pretty sure that if anyone would know... John would?
I'll look at CCCP (it looks interesting)
not possible (at least as far as I know).
It creates registry keys everywhere on installation, in order to associate itself with the installed programs and if you try to use it without an install, it won't work.
In other words, its an extremely-hard-to-make-portable-if-not-impossible application.
Sorry I couldn't reply earlier.
my mistake.
I can't find a reason why the portable version from 2 years ago is not supported... I motion to take over?
If it's been 2 years and the dev isn't active here, I say go for it. It's been requested a couple times.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
and, well, its a no-go. The whole installation is well over 300 MB, and it installs/updates a bunch of system files and a lot of registry entries. It would take at least a week to make portable on a good computer--forget it on my 10 year old, which burns out every few hours. Even if it were made portable, copying 317 MB of dependencies to each machine you try it on would take a very long time to start and exit.
So, sorry for whoever wanted MediaPortal.
I told you already, it's .Net Also, I think it has a dependancy on Windows Media Player 11 that you might not be able to completely get away from. That opens up a whole other can of worms.
It really doesn't surprise me though, it doesn't really look like the type of application that could or should be made portable. I suppose you could always bring along your USB TV Card (including the drivers), and your Windows Media Remote, and an external hard drive because recording Hi-Def TV to a flash drive could be a nightmare, but hey each to their own. In my humble opinion if people want to manage media portably then they'd be better off with something like SongBirdPortable.
On the positive side, I will say that for an installed application, it's absolutely fantastic and I love it! Who knew checking the weather on your TV could be this much fun! Watching Netflix on TV isn't too bad either (rather than a comparitively small computer screen).
(tho they weren't possible...maybe when u get a new, computa--at least for the former)
any progress on
http://applian.com/freecorder (v 4.1)
http://dl.boxee.tv/boxee-0.9.23.15885.exe
have u had a change of mind/please reconsider on http://StreamTransport.com (working (last I LOOK, has not been using ST for a while) version=version b4 last= http://download3.videohelp.com/streamtransport_setup_1022041.exe ). Please also reconsider for BurnAware because gluxon said he wouldn't be updating it--of course see if it's OK to take over from him. (There's some lineage connection between True Burner and BurnAware but as far as features non/similarities, I'm not sure what those are;ie, which is better. BA came out first, then TB later, using BA SDK-or-something.)
Pyro, as far as apps u have already PAF'ed, how do u want to handle when updates come out? Do we remind u here? on this very thread (NEW versions out: http://glorylogic.com/trueburner.html v 1.2 (date 111210)/ http://BurnAware.com 3.1 (111510), http://MiPony.net v 1.2)?
NEW requests: http://lifehacker.com/5411061 and this thread https://portableapps.com/node/23298#comment-166560
http://MediaBrowser.tv is a OS WMC plugin so I don't know if it would need to be PAF'ed?!?!
sidenote: working, latest version of XBMC: https://portableapps.com/node/19745 ???
PS: this thread is getting long...should we consider any future requests and replies be started in a new thread???
You reference the thread from Launchy if you are asking for the other programs to be made then you should ask for them directly in a request but not by trying to downplay or hijack another applications discussion
“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” Dr. Seuss
downplaying cuz that thread is especially a DEV Test thread? (I mean if it had been a request type thread, let's say...then it wouldn't had been bad-form...or not so much???)
i don't feel that's what i'm doing...but whatever...if it was, i apologize (but let me know etiquette, i need some edumacation)...and my new year's rez is i won't do it again
SCRATCH that Launchy thread ( https://portableapps.com/node/23298#comment-166560 ), instead I meant take a look at this for new add'l requests: https://portableapps.com/node/17915#comment-166864
happy NY, every1 !!
freecorder: I completely forgot about (I never started working on it.) My bad.
boxee: haven't looked at yet.
If you want StreamTransport that bad, I'll look at it.
gluxon gave me the thumbs up for BurnAware Portable takeover.
RocketDock has already been done (search it, or view my blogpage with all the apps on it).
RE: PS. Maybe... the PAM 2.0b is over 200 posts long, though...
EDIT: ok, ObjectDock is off the table. It's garbage in terms of making it portable (bunch of stuff is added, some seemingly without purpose).
NeXus might be possible, but its still a bit complicated. As far as I know, RocketDock is the best of the three in terms of being able to make portable and being flash drive and CPU friendly.
True Burner 1.5 will work with the current portable launcher.
I'm done with MiPony and almost done with StreamTransport.
Still working on BurnAware.
Boxee, if not FOSS, is at least freeware and no additional HW required other than ur standard lap or desktop, keyboard, and mouse
Direct DL link of latest version i know (and free!): http://dl.boxee.tv/boxee-0.9.23.15885.exe
had chance to test MiPony, worked on XP...just can't tell u whether leaves anything behind or write to registry cuz don't know how to test/tell. Thanks (for MPC-HC upcoming release also)!
I did look up some more info on boxee, and it does look like its freeware.
I'll take a look at the app
It's a %LOCALAPPDATA% app. In other words, Hulu becomes installed in "C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data". I don't know why, but every single app I know of that gets installed into that location cannot become a portable app. And as far as I know, nobody has come up with a way to fix that issue.
Sorry about that
I believe I am not the only one with noch ad min rights on his work machine and the need - okay - wish to sync his work calendar wit Google Calendar.
That'd be really cool to have!
-DerSarek
Whereever you go - There you are!
I'm not sure what it is you want...
http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=89955
It looks like you need Microsoft Outlook to use Sync. This is bad because I don't have Outlook, (b) Outlook is not portable and (c) in my experience, many shared computers don't have outlook, thus it would be useless on those computers.
But there is Mozilla Thunderbird.
So I did a quick google search to see if its possible and found this:
http://www.ehow.com/how_6805791_sync-google-calendar-thunderbird.html
From the looks of it, you don't even need to install anything, except for that lightening extension (I wonder if that is portable?)
It's out of date but it's there: Lightning Extension.
The link on our page has 0.8 on the button, but if you click it, it takes you to the latest version on the official site.
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
Oh I see, I thought PA.c had to do something to make it work with ThunderbirdPortable. I guess that makes sense being that it's an add-on that it will just work. I've not really used it myself so I suppose I shouldn't really comment.
wunderlist looks interesting:
http://www.6wunderkinder.com/wunderlist/
I'll look at it.
because it has to download something, but I'm not sure what exactly, nor the license that thing has... I need to look at it more.
EDIT: I looked at it more. And it doesn't look like its possible (as far as I know). It won't work if you try to launch it after changing its installation location.
Regarding it needing to connect to the internet, there are two versions:
Network Version
We have built wunderlist with Titanium, a framework for mobile and desktop applications made by appcelerator. The network version for wunderlist only contains the wunderlist app itself and downloads the Titanium runtime upon installation from the appcelerator servers. This means a smaller initial download size of just 5MB.
Bundled Version
The bundled version has a bigger initial file size of around 25MB. It contains all files required to install wunderlist and needs no internet connection during installation. That also means that unusual problems with appcelerator Servers can not interrupt your installation since the framework runtime is already included in your bundled wunderlist Version.
Any word on progress for DVDFlick?
PortableApps.com Advocate
The installer looks for AciveX libraries in %windir%\system32 and if it finds out that one of the .OCX files are missing, it will add it to the system.
I know because I ran the installer at home, then I ran it at the library to test, and it said that a file was missing. I ran the installer in the sandbox and found more files being installed there then on my PC.
I don't know how many files are needed in order to make DVD Flick run. I need to get those files, and try running on yet another PC, and see if everything works well.
But everything else is working
FBreader is a nice simple small E-Book reader application that is just screaming to be made into a portable app and added to the portable apps suite.
What makes this so attractive is that it would give users the ability to put their reader application FBreader plus their entire E-Book library collection together on a thumb drive and take them anywhere.
FBreader is open source and available for the PC, Mac, Linux etc. but seems to be a little poorly documented and is thus a little tricky to set up for some folks, so I can't think of a better candidate for a nice simple portable app.
You could even use FBreader to organize and distribute EPUB versions of portable apps help docs.
---
EDIT -
I didn't see anything on your apps menu, or upcoming announce page, which is why I made the above request, but Googling FBreader portable app brought up the page for your BETA FBReader 0.8.7 and FBReader Portable 0.12.10 tests.
The first dates all the way back to 2007 so I guess things have been moving kind of slow.
I try to do my part and get the new FBReader Portable 0.12.10 installed and give you some feedback, because this really is going to be a popular piece of portable software if we can get it working well as a portable app.

A number of these are already in testing.

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” – Proverbs 15:1
as chris said, there are a lot of em in the beta forums
Off the top of my head:
I already made GLtron Portable (although it hasn't been very popular)
https://portableapps.com/node/25138
Neverball, tremulous, nexuiz, pingus, and secret maryo chronicals are all in the beta forums (although I was too lazy to search and post a link to them)
I'll see what I can do
Most of them look pretty easy, so you might see a lot of them soon...
I know there's alot of topics about FDM and it doesnt seems to be positive. Maybe a launcher can be made to handle those reg files? I do not know how to program but this might be an idea.
Launcher starts
- Detecting FDM's reg
- If detected, rename it to something else, else go to next step.
- Start FDM.
- Any browser that launches after FDM is launched will have FDM's plug-in.
Launcher close
- Close FDM. Importing reg to launcher's Dir/Reg or somewhere else and delete those reg away from the com.
- Browsers will have to be restarted to be able to download again
right?
but just to make sure, I googled FDM. I found this, this, this, and this, too.
take your pick.
It's been a while but I'm a little gun-shy of Free Download Manager. IIRC (and it's possible I don't) it was at best some kind of disguised ad-ware, and not very stable at that. My personal favorite was LeechGet but in truth I find that I don't really have much use for a download manager these days. Most of my larger downloads tend to be torrents.
Just my 2 Cents worth.
FreeDownloadManager (from http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/) is open source and as far as I see has no ad-ware. There are some fake versions though and a russian app with the same name (that I don't know).
I use FDM a lot locally, especially for larger downloads that are not available as torrent (fdm can handle torrents, too, but not very good).
I used it a loooong time ago so my comments should be taken with a grain of salt. I see they're on version 3 now, I don't recall what version I used to use, possibly in the low 2's. Perhaps Adware is a bit strong, but there is something nagging me in the back of my mind. Perhaps the way they used to present their product, it was just suspicious, not a typical open source product. Anyway, like I said, I always remember it being a little unstable but perhaps it's improved a lot since I last used. Either way, if it's open source it's a candidate for PortableApps treatment, people can make up their own minds. I have nothing against it in principle.
I'd like to see it portablized, too. But I don't know if it can be done easily, as it installs plugins for detected browsers and suggests being autorun with windows.
Even if it is open source, the name seems to be trademarked.
-edit-
I looked a bit further into FDM again and it offers a portable mode (don't know if it's truly portable, though). And uses GPL as licence. I never encountered any spy- or ad-ware behaviour in the past (I use it since some version 2.x), but I found an option to buy some customizable version on their website that allows companies to swith up to 5 banners. Apart from that option, the original base app seems clean.
I'll take a look at it.
Hope it can be used with portable browser! Coz the original fdm portable does not do this job
but I doubt I'll be able to make it work inside portable web browsers (but that doesn't mean I won't try).
you can see it where there is a huge section of the recent posts page just plastered with my recent app-fest.
I haven't looked at how it interacts with web browsers, to see if it can be made portable, but I'm about to do that as soon as I save this post.
so I looked at xrick, kobo deluxe, and my personal favorite, Chromium B.S.U. (I feel like I played that game on Ubuntu some while back, and yet I still can't get passed the first level ).
I'll try to release portable versions on Sunday.
If you have time can you take a look at Frhed? http://frhed.sourceforge.net/en/
Frhed is a free hex editor.
License: GPL
Language: C, C++
It would be great to have a hex editor on the go in PA format.
Frhed is my favorite hex editor. Simple, small and open source.
I think? Notepad++ has a hex editor built in but, I'm not sure how good it is.
Notepad++ is 10mb too, I want something thats dedicated to hex editing.
took me 27 Min, 37 Seconds, 321 miliseconds.

it'll fit on a floppy.
Thank you very much! & Happy New Year!
Not sure if this is possible as the original dev appears to have died and the project has been taken over by someone else without any objection.

I have asked the dev if it were possible to make QTTabBar portable, but he has said it isn't due to the nature of the app (or rather extension). I have seen other QT apps that are portable and wondered if you might be able to do something with it?
I hope so as it's simply brilliant, it adds tabs and launcher abilities to windows explorer.
Fingers crossed...!

I'll take a look
It ties directly into Explorer itself. And you can only unload it by killing all the Explorer instances. I've used it previously. Our designer is a big fan of it.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Thank you for your reply. I didn't hold much hope for it but thought it was worth asking.
What about Q-Dir? that's another good file explorer. Would anyone know if it's possible for Q-Dir to capture windows processes? Again I asked the dev and the reply was simply that he liked the idea and would look into it. Not heard anything since. I would like Q-dir as it has portable file association, which is something I have problems with after performing a complete system recovery.
For example, I use EditPadLite as my default text editor but after a recovery the file association is lost and for some weird reason it won't register - at least not til it wants to, which could be weeks later!! I don't have a clue why. When I try to open a .txt file and use 'open with', I search for EditPad and double click, but it doesn't appear in the list of 'possibles' as the default option?
I prefer EditPad as it has tabs and loads almost instantly, few others do that.
Thanks again and keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to the new PAPv2 release with the extras. Hopefully one of those will be portable file association eh?! lol

Q-Dir is in dev-test already, here. I don't know if computerfreaker is still active, though.
File Menu Tools?
