Really, the MD5 checksums aren't needed at all. The installers contain a self-check in themselves, so they won't run if they detect anything wrong (e.g. incomplete download).

a simple method would be to run md5sum OpenOfficePortable_3.2.0_*.paf.exe > OpenOfficePortable_3.2.0_Localized.paf.exe.md5sum in the sourceforge FRS shell.
Obviously, its not going to split everything into its own md5sum file for each different version, but it would provide the md5sums requested. I'm sure with a little extra work, a bash script could be created that would do it however.
And yes, I realize that they have the self check. However, it is still a requirement (AFAIK) that downloads have an md5sum listed.

The question is what would be the point of having the MD5 hosted the same place as the binary? If the point is to ensure a complete download, then both the built-in self CRC check and the digital signature ensure that. If the point is to ensure that it's a legitimate unmodified copy, then that point is defeated since the download for the binary and the 'official' md5 are the same location and if someone can alter one, they can alter them both. Having MD5s listed alongside binaries on SourceForge doesn't really gain users anything.
We do use them internally within the PA.c Updater to ensure the download worked properly (md5 stored on pa.c, downloads stored wherever). I could see about having those published on the app pages for multilingual apps like FF, OO.o, etc if enough people want them.

If the installer is infected with a virus, it will display an error as soon as you run it because it knows if it has been altered.
If you want to ensure it's unchanged before running, just right-click on the EXE and select Properties. You'll see a Digital Signatures tab and on it, details on how the EXE is digitally signed by Rare Ideas, LLC (our parent company). A digital signature is secure. An MD5 sum is insecure and can be faked with a virus-infected file.

then why do we provide md5sums anymore. I'm not trying to be nitpicky about it, but I'm just curious.

It's basically a legacy thing since some geeks still like them. They are useful as a quick check to ensure that a download completed properly, which is what we use them for internally in the PA.c Updater, for instance. I may add them for the additional languages when I switch over to the new app directory, since they'll all be in one database anyway.
