I installed FileZilla Portable and did not recognize the path of the setting. After several tests I found that was because in the path one directory have the character "$" and this is a problem for FileZilla related to environment variables that begin precisely with that character ($). I had to rename my directory and everything was normal. With other portable applications this problem never appeared.
I mention this in case someone experiences something similar and if possible fix in an upcoming release.

This is a known issue with many apps. And, some apps themselves (not just our launchers) don't like $ in paths either. So, you should avoid it. That said, I could never figure out why anybody would ever have a $ in a directory name.

Special characters have special meanings in different environments. In Windows, the $ is used to designate an administrative share. In Oracle, the apostrophe causes issues in filenames. The % is used in naming constants. There are apps that don't even like to have spaces in the file or folder names.
The problem from the end-user point of view comes from the fact the more recent Windows OS versions allow users to use long filenames and some special characters within the Windows Explorer environment, but this is no guarantee that these names will work with every app.
I've saved myself a lot of headaches by getting into the habit of using only 'A'-'z' and '1'-'0' and the underscore '_' in file and folder names.

I use "$" in certain folders that have some special treatment from the point of view of administration. Besides using it as the initial character in the name of these special folders and is easy to see them in alphabetical order. Okay, I need to revise my strategy for these names and folder management.

My geek friends use a starting underscore almost universally for special folder names. I've never seen an app that can't handle that.
