Download Universal Extractor Portable 1.6.1 Development Test 5 [781KB download / 11.4MB installed]
Release Notes:
Development Test 5 (2011-1-13):
- Updated installer and launcher (launcher to 2.1 b)
- simplified appinfo and launcher ini
Development Test 4 (2010-08-30):
- Revised the Launcher ini.
- updated download url for the online installer.
Development Test 3 (2010-08-15):
- UniExtract did not put cache in Data/settings but instead in %TEMP%... fixed (hopefully)
Development Test 2 (2010-08-09):
- Fixed a "bug" in which the installer didn't unpack the program. Bad me.
Development Test 1 (2010-08-08): Initial release
NOTICE: This is GPL, but some of the components it uses are freeware(assuming the author of UniExtract asked them :P), so I used an online installer... I hope it's ok.
The installer doesn't work properly. The installer downloads the correct rar file to App\UniversalExtractor\, but it doesn't extract it, so the launcher can't run it. You need to add some post install code to extract the rar file.
Confirming it doesn't install correctly.

Hmm... this is the first time I've done a online installer so I don't know everything... will check it.
EDIT: Ahh... I think I found the problem... will upload soon after testing.
Updated to Development Test 2.
This is one of my all-time favorite apps. Looking forward to it becoming a full release!

Thanks for the comment.
by the way, does anyone know if this online installer is ok? the program its self is GPL, but it has components that are freeware and I don't know...
I personally think it should be ok to package but it's a matter of opinion.
Lots of open source software contain closed source components. 7Zip uses the closed source UNRAR plugin. Ubuntu contains closed source drivers. Both of these are regarded as open source.
However other similar instances are not so. DVDFlick uses ImgBurn for burning. It's hosted on Sourceforge but because ImgBurn is closed-source many people regard DVDFlick as not open source.
I guess it depends how John sees it.

Yeah... I get confused at that sometimes
I went to see if I could extract SweetHome3D-2.5-windows.exe with this as it requires admin which I don't have here at Uni. Before it continued (and it did succeed, as I suspected it was an InnoSetup installer which extracts perfectly), I got a message box:
I think this means the debugdir in DefaultData\UniExtract.ini should be revised - maybe it needs backslashes (as with the trailing backslash it puts on) or maybe it's not relative to the program directory but instead the Data directory?

Ahh, thanks.. I see. I will check and fix it.
EDIT ...
it seems that Universal Extractor does not support ../ or ..\ , I get the same error.
if I put X:\PortableApps\UniversalExtractor\Data\settings in debugdir, it works.
*sigh* I wish PAL had a "Last Used directory" or something like that... I'm having the same issue with FlightGear portable which I'm trying to develop
What exactly do you mean by that?
The way I'd do it would just be to always set it to %PAL:DataDir%\settings. Is there some other value you want to support?

Like LastDrive=*: in Data\settings... but never mind, doing what you suggested should work, thanks.
It does. That's what's used for drive letter updating. If you mean some way of having an initial value, that's in 2.1; if you use a current tip build of PAL you'll get it.

Development Test 3 released.
Ok UniExtract it self is portable, but the files that it uses to extract the files are not. They will leave registry track behind. That is the main reason why I did not make UniExtrat a portable-app.
To confirms this you can use RegFromAppPortable and you will see what I mean. Sorry for the inconveniencejust trying to help
You mean this?
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\exe]
"b"="X:\\************"
"MRUList"="ba"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\*]
"c"="X:\\************"
"MRUList"="cba"
Yeah, seems like it leaves some things behind that I can't control...
No that's not it.
If you run UniExtract by it self when extracting a file, it will leave registry entry from what ever archive decompression file it uses for the extraction and not from UniExtract it self.
Unfortunately I used UniExtract to much on my system that i can't replicate an example any more.
Keep in mind that the registry entry are made by the files used for the extraction and not UniExtract. UniExtract only calls on the file needed for the extraction and that is when the registry entry are made.
Sorry, I don't get it.
I used RegFromApp on Win7 and extracted multiple files... I didn't see any except things that you shouldn't worry about...
Updated to Dev Test 4.
Is this project dead? The download link doesn't work anymore.
well, I have to re upload the file.. will update it today
Ok. It had been a while so I thought it was a dead project so I went ahead and created my own portable version. It would be nice to see this one become official - it's a nice little utility.
Yeah. it doesnt tell me when it expires so...
"The file you are trying to access is no longer available publicly."
Can you maybe reupload it to multiupload or sharebee so there are mirrors?
This is a great program to have portable and it's a pity that whenever people try to get it its offline.
The installer is no longer available on the file host. Please update. Try hosting with Drop Box, SpiderOak or Ubuntu One
Still unable to download. Please rehost.
Edit: I fail. Just realised there's an official portable version.
I suggest hosting it on something like MediaFire.
Previously known as kAlug.
Where is the "official portable version" that you found?

Here are 2 versions of Universal Extractor, updated to PAF 3.0 by me. This one is just kai.inouye's installer updated to PAF 3.0 with a new splash screen. Whereas, this one is an unofficial port of Universal Extractor, found at http://www.lupopensuite.com/db/universalextractor.htm, that has been updated to handle newer software types. Both of these are online installers.
If kai.inouye comes back, I will gladly turn this back over to him, otherwise, I'm willing to take it over. Peace...

I can't download the file. Please, can you upload it to a download server like Mediafire?
Thanks
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I won't be able to get new links posted until Friday night. I'll post them on Box.com; my netbook doesn't like MediaFire, cool?

None of the online installers work.
There is however a working "portable apps" version available:
www.google.com/#q=%5B11%2F23%5D+Universal+Extractor+1.7.8.90d+by+Gora
click on nsaneforums and go to post #8
It's in my box drive. Go to
https://app.box.com/s/ih91dsdogpldtifiiv6f and have a look in the "Other people's work" directory. This is updated to use the LupoSuites version. It is more current. Also, 2 things.
As you may have noticed, I also have other unofficial PAF launchers there. Feel free to use any of them.

The file you linked to works fine, thank you
Have you tried the version with the Gora Mod?

Its an offline installer, but it takes admin privileges to run.
I don't know about you but I prefer to open apps without being prompted for admin privileges.
Something didn't feel right about this so deleted as soon as downloaded. Will go back to original package and even get the source. Guess I will start a fork.
EDIT: New release for Universal Extractor Portable 1.6.1 Re-release is here. And the multilingual issues are fixed (I hope).
