PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Not that I'd use Opera; Firefox works great. However, I found this odd, as I typically only consider use of Open Source product versions.

official portable opera
Opera can now (at version 11) be installed as a portable app directly from the official installer from Opera.com, by selecting something like "install on thumbdrive".
I tested it, installing it in the PortableApps directory and works fine, no need for repackaging and such
Less Portable
Keep in mind that the portable install from the regular installer only partially portable and will leave registry keys behind and paths in operaprefs.ini will break when you move PCs. The PortableApps.com Format version does not leave registry keys behind, automatically updates things in your operaprefs.ini as you change computers and your drive letter changes and also keeps your settings in a consistent location (Data) for easy backup with your other portable apps and automatically switches languages with the PA.c Menu. Please it works with the PA.c Updater.
It's also worth noting that the PA.c Format package is also 'official' as it has been licensed by Opera Software ASA.

By Design
Those are by design. =D:\ get replaced by =E:\ when you move from a D drive to an E drive.
Problem
Installed it and warning came up "corrupt file opera.exe cannot find user profile"...
it crashed when changing speed dial background and when it restarted i had lost everything it was like clean install...
what can i do?
Opera is so great, but...
Opera is great for using from a pendrive.
First, I tried the official installer with the USB Mode. But it didn't work, because it's saved EVERYTHING (the profile) into the C:\Documents and Settings\...\Application Data folder.
Then I tried the Opera@USB (www.opera-usb.com/index.htm), and it's works fine.
Also, there is an another portable Opera, somewhere on kejut.com.
Now, I ask: Why we need the PortableApps Edition??? Maybe this is an 'official' portable Opera? I tried PortableApps, but these apps are very slow from a pendrive. I don't want to say anything bad, but I think we don't need an another portable Opera.
Only Truly Portable One
This is actually the only truly portable one. Opera@USB is just Opera extracted from the installer with a default profile. No changes. So it leaves a registry key behind and paths to things like last opened files break as you move PCs. The one on kejut.com is closed source and I don't think has permission from Opera. Opera, Portable Edition is licensed by Opera, has an open source launcher, and fully portablizes Opera and puts it in PortableApps.com Format.
If it's saving anything to the local PC, it's because you're opening opera.exe directly instead of opening OperaPortable.exe. You probably set Opera as your default browser from within Opera itself or associated it accidentally. You can manually set OperaPortable.exe using something like Default Browser. This same thing would happen if you set firefox.exe instead of FirefoxPortable.exe or chrome.exe instead of ChromePortable.exe as well.

The Opera installer now has a USB mode (don't really know what it does) built into it, i think that's what he was referring to for the local PC stuff.
Same Thing
Opera has supported this mostly-portable mode since version 9 or 10. They just added it to the installer. But it has the same issues Opera@USB as it's Opera extracted with a default profile.
Updating
I want to love this app.. But every time I open the Browser it has updated itself into a new revision w/o letting me know.. I lose my bookmarks, settings, and speedial/.. I don't want to try to resurrect my passwords, page settings and speedial every time.. I have tried to move the old "profile" to overwrite.. But it doesn't seem to help.. Any thoughts?

if it's at 'Automatically update', just change that. you can have it tell you updates are available or not to check at all.
that way updates only come from the PAM menu. and you can decide from there NOT to update until you are ready.

save your Profile directory
In portableOpera it's in Data/Profile I believe.
the most important files to save are bookmarks.adr , wand.dat (your passwords), and for me: notes.adr
but I also have set up my speeddial - speeddial.ini with thumbnails
I also have dictionaries.
now ALL of thes are in the Profile dir, so the easiest thing for new users is to copy the whole darn dir.
the bookmarks and the wand will probably be the most used files and the ones that have to be updates most frequently, but if you copy your Profile dir, you'll get all your stuff
I want to love this app, too, but ...
First off, I want to thank all the folks for working on the portable apps here. I've used several of them for quite awhile. Good stuff.
I have to say "however ..." for Opera 11. Sorry.
Approximately every third time I run Opera 11 on either of two computers, my entire profile gets deleted. And I have approximately 8gb of saved mail (not to mention bookmarks and other customizations), so it's a bit of a bother. This did not happen with the 10.6 builds, just this 11 one. It's also really deleted: when I check the properties on the Opera Portable folder, it goes from appx. 8gb before launching Opera 11 to ... 24mb after exiting the app.
After restoring from backup, I might try what ceciliaFX recommends in the two above posts. Otherwise, I might search and see if I can find that 10.6.2 installer again.
As a data point, both of the computers I'm talking about run Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and I run off of a USB hard drive, not a flash device.
Locked Profile
My apologies for this bug. The most likely issue is that the profile folder is locked when you exit (if you open something from online and windows 'locks' the folder). So the launcher tries to copy it (to ensure it doesn't get erased). If you start the app again while this is being attempting, it'll fail and you'll lose your settings. This is a known issue in the current PortableApps.com Launcher but usually only affects people who instantly close and then re-open an app. It's related to this bug. It should be fixed sometime soon later this month.
Unfortunately, Opera doesn't support a proper -profile switch as Firefox does, so we can't tell it the proper place to keep its data (namely, Data). So, the launcher has to move it back and forth. It's a simple rename operation, so generally finished in milliseconds. Unfortunately, Opera will open files using an internal directories that you download (doc files, etc) and this can lock the files. Closing and opening too quickly will also cause the issue.
I'll be sure and add your issue as we work to the solution to balance open/close time, backup ability, etc. If you'd like to follow the topic I linked, we'll be discussing it further there shortly. You can post a quick comment there now to ensure it shows up in your 'tracker' in your My Account page.
Great! - But far graeter ...
It is graet, that finnally Opera did it into PortableApps. I have been your fan for years, yet.
I use Opera portable for quite a while. You put it on https://portableapps.com/apps/internet only in the browser section, but it is also an email program, irc-program, torrent and rss-reader. So it is missing in at least four sections.
(It is also not on https://portableapps.com/apps/office in the section "Presentations" - while Opera has an own presentation mode (but and I really know NOBODY who would use that))
(Furthermore You could print a warning: since Version 11 opera isnt't so stable anymore. In older versions I could open up to 70 Tabs including some PDF-documents via Acrobat-plugin without problems. Version 11 crashes on my PC often with only 25 up to 50 Tabs opened of which none is a pdf-document but some have flash.)
By the way: You discribe Firefox as "... web browser that's safe and secure" - But you haven't listed JonDoFox there yet. JonDoFox http://anonymous-proxy-servers.net/en/jondofox.html is even securer than standard FireFox. It also anonymises Your IP and has Addons for anonymising ads, cookies and email preinstalled. Since JonDoFox is already in PortableAps format http://anonymous-proxy-servers.net/downloads/JonDoFox.paf.exe I wonder why You didn't include it in Your list.

Works very slow
Opera works very slow and instabil on usb sick.
In Firefox, Chrome, iron it isnt so.
Games work on my USB fast: Urban Terror, Assault Cube, Sauerbraten.
It is a old problem with Opera portable.

opera 11.11 forgets language setting
dl'd and set my preferred language under settings, but when I exit and restart, it flips back to english. Had no problems with any prior versions from portable apps.
Running very slowly
I just downloaded this a couple of days ago, and no matter what, it hangs a lot and is slow to open new tabs or download sites. On the same flashdrive, Portable FF runs just fine. Diagnostics indicate the flash drive is in good "health." The hanging and slowness has happened on two different computers, both running Windows 7, with different high speed internet providers.
I seem to be the only one having this problem, so maybe I did something wrong, but I can't imagine what. I've installed and used portable apps many times, and it's a pretty straightforward process.
Has anyone else come across this, or does anyone have any suggestions for figuring this out? I'd really love to use Opera, but it's adding a 30 second or more lag time to almost every action I try to perform.

Here's a couple suggestions to try:
1. Try renaming your Data directory and see if the behaviour is still exhibited. If not, it means your data was somehow corrupted.
2. If it is still slow, try re- installing a fresh copy of Opera. Note that I don't mean install over top of your current install, but renaming your OperaPortable directory to something else and installing Opera into OperaPortable again.
3. If this still doesn't fix your issue, it might be an issue with your drive. Try running chkdisk.
If you still have issues, please post again.
Well, that was interesting
You were right - it was the disk. The strange thing about it, though, was I had installed to the same disk portable FF and SeaMonkey - neither of which would fully install the LastPass plugin. All the bad sectors just happened to be in the various three installs of that plugin (within each browser). Is it possible that downloading a buggy plugin could cause a disk to get bad sectors? It's very strange - I've used LastPass and its plugins for several years, on several installations, and never had a problem, and suddenly today it was a nightmare... and then the bad sectors. Curious!
Oh, well. I installed Opera on another disk, and now it's running faster than FF. Thanks for your help, and for responding so quickly!
